The Key Snapper

The latest criminal on the streets in the Key Snapper, and what does he do? He takes pictures of your keys! And why does he do this? Because San Diego computer scientists at a lab in the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering have made a way to copy your keys with just a picture. Scary huh?

Now just a little background information. Your keys contain a numeric code that shows exactly to unlock your desired lock. If it doesn’t have that code, the lock won’t unlock.

So how does it work? Ok, so typically keys have about 5 or 6 cuts and are evenly spaced out. The people over at the UCSD lab made a piece of software that can determine the depth of each cut, the numeric code and info on the brand of key the picture is taken of. Use that little piece of software and you can successfully be “Sneakey.”

Did I forget to mention, they’re calling it Sneakey? Pretty creative huh? And watch out for the Key Snapper! He might just get your keys!

Windows Vista "NoDriveTypeAutoRun" Security Issue

CERT/CC has reported a security issue in Windows Vista, which can be exploited by malicious people to bypass certain security settings.

AutoPlay is a feature designed to immediately begin reading from a drive (e.g. run a setup file) when a media is inserted. According to Microsoft, this feature can be disabled for all drives by setting the value of the "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorerNoDriveTypeAutoRun" registry key to "0xFF". However, as Windows Vista fails to properly handle the mentioned registry key, this may still result in programs being executed automatically when a media is inserted even with the registry key value set to "0xFF".

Successful exploitation may result in execution of arbitrary code, but requires physical access to a vulnerable system or that a user is tricked into inserting a malicious media (e.g. USB device).

Microsoft Has Verisign Revoke Atsiv Certificate

Microsoft Corp. last week slammed the door on a free utility out of Australia that outflanked one the company's touted security features in Windows Vista by having the program's digital certificate revoked.

LinchpinLabs' Atsiv utility, released July 20, used a signed driver to load other, unsigned code, into the Vista kernel, according to U.S.-based Symantec Corp. researcher Ollie Whitehouse. Atsiv, said Whitehouse, thus let users circumvent a feature of the 64-bit version of Vista that allows only digitally-signed code to be loaded into the operating system's kernel. The digital signing requirement is one way Vista tries to stymie hackers from infiltrating the kernel -- the heart of the OS -- with, among other things, rootkit cloaking technologies that hide malware from security software.

"This is rootkit behavior," said Whitehouse last Monday.

Atsiv's developers, on the other hand, have touted the utility as a tool useful for loading unsigned, but legitimate, drivers into Vista 64-bit.

Friday, Microsoft announced it had worked with VeriSign, the company that provided the certificate to LinchpinLabs, to have the code signing key revoked, said Scott Field, a Windows security architect in a posting to the Vista security team's blog. "VeriSign has revoked the code signing key used to sign the Atsiv kernel driver , which means the code signing key will no longer be considered valid," Field said.

Windows 7 Ultimate cracked and activated with OEM master key

Windows 7 has yet to even be released officially to the general public, and already the dodgy folk on the Internet have fully cracked and activated the Ultimate version, with help from a leaked Lenovo OEM DVD .ISO file. The news comes from website My Digital Life who state that you can already pass Windows Genuine Advantage validation offline, OEM style. The leaked .ISO was originally posted on a Chinese forum, which was then downloaded in order for people to get hold of the boot.wim, and in turn retrieving the OEM-SLP key, plus the OEM activation certificate. Microsoft uses the same digitally signed OEM certificate, which has an .xrm-ms extension, as that in Windows Vista.

Clearing up the confusion on Vista licensing and key management

Since Windows Vista has been released to the public, there has been a lot of confusion and hype surrounding some of the licensing decisions and restrictions with which Microsoft Corp. saddled the operating system and its many versions. Microsoft's exploit predictions are right less than half the time

Microsoft Corp. today called its first month of predicting whether hackers will create exploit code for its bugs a success -- even though the company got its forecast right less than half the time.

"I think we did really well," said Mike Reavey, group manager for the Microsoft Security Research Center (MSRC), when asked for a post-mortem evaluation of the first cycle of the team's Exploitability Index. "Four of the issues that we said where consistent exploit code was likely did have exploit code appear over the first two weeks. And another key was that in no case did we rate something too low."

OEMs Pick Up Windows 7 RTM Code Today in Redmond

Brandon LeBlanc: When we announced Windows 7 had RTMd on Wednesday, I posted that OEMs would receive the RTM code within a few days. Well, its been a few days! Earlier today, a handful of OEMs arrived in Redmond to pick up their RTM code. In the past when a Windows release reaches RTM, we have traditionally given some/selected OEMs the opportunity to come to Redmond and pick up the RTM code personally. I thought it would be neat to showcase these OEMs that came to campus today as the RTM code is handed off to them to begin preparing for General Availability (GA) on October 22, 2009!
