NPD Group Inc, which monitors retail sales, has found that sales of Apple Macs in the United States have remained pretty much the same as they were
last November, falling by just 1 percent, while sales of Microsoft Windows PCs have risen 7 percent. The research found that sales of desktop
computers as a whole have dropped 20 percent, with Windows desktop sales falling by 15 percent and Macs falling 38 percent. Meanwhile, notebook sales
have risen. Sales of Apple Macbooks rose by 22 percent in November, while sales of Windows notebooks rose by just 15 percent. However, the rise of
Windows overall may be just down to cost.

13.08.2008Windows 2003 KB: Slow network communication from Vista RTM (6000) to Windows 2003 SP2
Brad Rutkowski: This was one issue I worked on for quite some time a few months ago. We found that Vista clients were taking forever to download
group policies from domain controllers in the regions while Vista SP1 and XP clients did not see the issue. If the local DC was running LH or Windows
2003 SP1, we didn't see any issue. If the server was running Windows 2003 SP2 though and had a certain type of hardware we would see the latency.
Based on customer reports, Windows Dev learned of more widespread devices in the network that dont understand greater window
scale factors. So, they improved the heuristics in SP1 for when to limit or disable auto-tuning, which is why we only saw in in Vista RTM and not
SP1.
The bug is in Windows 2003 SP2 and the details can be found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947773 So if you find that you have vista clients experiencing network
latency when hitting a Windows 2003 SP2 server (File server, DC, Exchange, etc) then you should look into this hotfix.

that IEEE 1394, known to Mac
users as FireWire, is heading
for a slow decline in the face
of major challenges from other
interfaces and a stagnating
market share.
FireWire, long a staple of
Macintosh computers, is a
high-speed serial interface
that's been used to connect
digital camcorders, hard disk
drives and other devices.
Although the FireWire standard
has seen evolution with IEEE
1394b, also known as FireWire
800, In-Stat analyst Brian
O'Rourke said FireWire
"suffers from being the
second-choice technology in
many market segments."
O'Rourke said that
1394's historic penetration
in the PC market didn't
exceed one-third of the
market, and it's now dwarfed

Despite growing awareness of the need to adopt more environmentally friendly IT practices, a quarter of firms (26%) admit to having done next to
nothing to green their IT, according a PMP Research study commissioned by the Evaluation Centre.
But others are doing more, with 16% of
respondents claiming to be ‘very actively’ pursing environmental improvements and a further 14% characterising themselves as
‘actively’ looking to green their IT.
For those businesses that have engaged with the need to green, the survey found that
organisations are hitting problems with their physical datacentre environment as they try to re-engineer their IT infrastructure. The key constraints
are lack of available space for new infrastructure, cited by 44% of respondents, coupled with a shortage of power capacity, mentioned by 38%.
