Windows Internet Explorer 7 DOWNLOAD

Few days ago at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.

First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

Internet Explorer 7 Will Not Be Integrated into Windows

BusinessWeek is reporting that Microsoft's next release of Internet Explorer, version 7, will not be integrated into Windows. Breaking nearly ten years of tradition, Internet Explorer was always very tightly integrated into Windows, allowing users to do such things as launch a website directly from any Windows Explorer window, or save a live web page as the desktop wallpaper.

Two New Internet Explorers

Along with Beta 1 of Windows Vista, Microsoft has produced not one but two beta versions of Internet Explorer 7--one for Windows XP, and one in the Vista beta. The most exciting (and long overdue) innovation in both is tabbed browsing, which lets you open multiple Web pages in one browser window. You switch between the pages by clicking tabs in the IE 7 window. (The free MSN Search Toolbar adds tabs to IE 6.) Tabs have long been in Opera, and they're an attraction in Mozilla Firefox.

The History of Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is 10 years old this year, but its genealogical roots are actually much older. Back when the Internet was first invented (for want of a better word) it was used mainly by universities and research institutions to share documents and information via FTP, Gopher and Usenet. Casual usage as we know it today was a rarity. That, however, was to change as the World Wide Web slowly came into being, thanks to a gentleman by the name of Tim Berners-Lee who not only published the first formal proposal for the World Wide Web, but is also credited with publishing the first Web page on August 6, 1991.

Bill could give Obama control of Internet during emergencies

A new U.S. senate bill has been redrafted to give President Obama the power of control to shut down the Internet in case of emergency situations. The 55-page draft that was obtained by CNET appears to permit the president to seize temporary control over private-sector networks in a cybersecurity emergency. If the bill is passed, it would allow control to temporary disable Internet traffic in private-sectors. "A Senate source familiar with the bill compared the president's power to take control of portions of the Internet to what President Bush did when grounding all aircraft on Sept.

Internet routing shows growing painsagain

Thanks to the virtualy infinite bandwidth of fiberor rather, the empty tubes that can hold multi-fiber cablesthe Internet has continued to get faster for almost four decades, with congestion only proving a temporary condition. But now, it's again uncertain if the routers that sit at the ends of these fibers will be able to keep up with the growth of the Internet.

Most of us take it on faith that if a computer creates an IP packet and sends it out with the right IP address in the "destination" field, the packet will get delivered to the computer holding that address. Anyone who's ever used the traceroute program ("tracert" on Windows) can attest to the fact that there are usually a good number of routers between any source and destination connected by the Internet.

Internet tax ban meets resistance in Senate

Several U.S. senators questioned whether to extend a ban on access and other Internet-only taxes, which expires on November 1. Representatives of Verizon and the National Taxpayer Union Foundation called on Congress to make the tax ban permanent, but several senators said the current ban could allow Internet service providers to package other products with access and exempt them from taxes. Three groups representing state government officials called for a more limited, temporary ban.

Several senators said they would support a temporary ban on Internet access taxes, but only if language in the moratorium is changed to make clear that states are allowed to tax services packaged with access, including music and movies and IPTV. The original Internet tax ban, which went into effect in October 1998, said that access and " other services as part of a package services offered to consumers " may be exempt from taxes. The last extension of the ban, passed in 2004, removed VoIP from the tax ban.

Five other senators introduced a bill, called the Internet Tax Freedom Extension Act, that would extend the ban on Internet access taxes another four years while closing the "loophole" that could allow other bundled services to be exempt from taxes. Three bills introduced this year would permanently extend the ban on Internet-only taxes. But other senators called for the tax ban to be made permanent. If the ban expires, consumers in some U.S. cities could pay up to an additional 30% and a permanent ban would help with Internet service providers' plans to invest in new services.

Move to extend Internet tax ban stalls in Senate

An effort by U.S. lawmakers to extend a moratorium on state Internet access taxes has stalled amid a dispute over whether the ban should be permanent or temporary.

The Senate Commerce Committee canceled a planned vote on a bill on Thursday that would have extended the tax ban for at least four more years after a possible compromise on the issue fell through.

"I am disappointed that the Commerce Committee was unable to act on legislation to extend the Internet tax moratorium at today's (meeting)," Commerce Committee Chairman Sen. Daniel Inouye said in a statement.

Inouye said there would be further discussions to try and reach "a reasonable compromise."..

Mozilla offers temporary fix for Firefox flaw

Responding to the disclosure of a serious Web browser flaw, the Mozilla Foundation offered on Friday a temporary fix to protect Firefox and Mozilla users.

The ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozi lla.org/firefox/releases/1.0.6 /patches/307259.xpi]downloadab le fix protects against attacks that take advantage of a new, unpatched flaw that could let attackers secretly run malicious software on users' PCs. The flaw was disclosed late Thursday by security researcher Tom Ferris, sending Mozilla staff into damage-control mode.

The problem has to do with the way the Firefox and Mozilla browsers handle International Domain Names, or IDNs, said Mike Schroepfer, director of engineering at Mozilla. IDNs are domain names that use local language characters. The fix disables support for such Web addresses, he said.

"This is a temporary work-around just to deal with the immediate issue," Schroepfer said. "We're working on a future release in which we will actually fix the problem and re-enable the IDN feature." Switching off IDN support impacts a subset of Firefox and Mozilla users who actually use such special domain names, he said. ..

Baby purchased on Internet being held by authorities

According to reports, a Belgian boy was purchased over the Internet by a couple in Ghent. Reports indicate that the potential parents paid between $6421.90 and $12843.81 USD for the child. The couple denies paying for the actual child, stating that any costs they paid were merely pregnancy costs that were charged to the natural parents. Dutch officials state that the couple have broken the laws for adopting children and as such the baby must be handed over to welfare authorities. The Netherlands courts have asked that the boy be placed into temporary custody until a decision is made by the Belgian government as to what action is required.
