Windows Internet Explorer 7 DOWNLOAD

Few days ago at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.

First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.

Internet Explorer 7 Will Not Be Integrated into Windows

BusinessWeek is reporting that Microsoft's next release of Internet Explorer, version 7, will not be integrated into Windows. Breaking nearly ten years of tradition, Internet Explorer was always very tightly integrated into Windows, allowing users to do such things as launch a website directly from any Windows Explorer window, or save a live web page as the desktop wallpaper.

Two New Internet Explorers

Along with Beta 1 of Windows Vista, Microsoft has produced not one but two beta versions of Internet Explorer 7--one for Windows XP, and one in the Vista beta. The most exciting (and long overdue) innovation in both is tabbed browsing, which lets you open multiple Web pages in one browser window. You switch between the pages by clicking tabs in the IE 7 window. (The free MSN Search Toolbar adds tabs to IE 6.) Tabs have long been in Opera, and they're an attraction in Mozilla Firefox.

The History of Internet Explorer

Internet Explorer is 10 years old this year, but its genealogical roots are actually much older. Back when the Internet was first invented (for want of a better word) it was used mainly by universities and research institutions to share documents and information via FTP, Gopher and Usenet. Casual usage as we know it today was a rarity. That, however, was to change as the World Wide Web slowly came into being, thanks to a gentleman by the name of Tim Berners-Lee who not only published the first formal proposal for the World Wide Web, but is also credited with publishing the first Web page on August 6, 1991.

Microsoft temp bans XBL users for explicit mottos

The next time you log into Xbox Live, you may want to check your profile to see if your motto is in line with Microsoft standards. If not, then you may find yourself locked out of the online gaming service, albeit for a short time.

An Xbox Live user recently found himself banned from XBL for inappropriate content stemming for his motto, Konichiwa, b****es! on his profile. The ban, which lasted a little more than 24 hours also was accompanied by an e-mail from Microsoft warning him about the questionable content. Part of the communication from the Xbox Live Community Management team notified him that his, Xbox Live account privileges have been suspended due to feedback received from other Xbox Live users about your inappropriate content on the service. Additionally, Xbox Live has deleted the content in question. The Xbox Live user known as CheapyD maintains that his motto has been the same even before the Xbox 360 launch, so it appears that Microsoft content crackdown seems to be pretty recent.

So XBL users beware. Your Big Brother at Microsoft is watching and is apparently ready to ban first and warn you later if explicit content is found on your account.

Microsoft to Protect Consumer Privacy

Microsoft will start erasing data from web searches after 18 months, unless it receives consent to store it longer. Microsoft is calling on the rest of the Internet industry to support it, with a common set of privacy practices. This week Yahoo will lay out its own plans for a similar policy for making search data anonymous within 13 months of receiving it.

These follow privacy regulations announced last month by Google, the leading Internet search provider. Privacy groups say they are especially concerned by Google's ability to match search data with information collected from other services like email, instant messaging and maps.

Reclaim Your Hard Drive Space the Easy Way

How many times have you run out of space on your C: drive and wondered… where did all my free space go? If you are tech savvy you'll probably open up your CCleaner shortcut and clean out the temp files, but where has the rest gone?

The answer is a great little freeware utility called DriveSpacio that helps you find out where all that free space has gone, similar to the more well known WinDirStat utility. The benefit of using this one is that it integrates directly into the Explorer shell and has a lot more reports.

PCLive.com offered as free Internet security suite

PCLive.com, a service offered SecurityCoverage Inc., is attempting to upstage security giants Symantec and McAfee by offering a complete suite of security tools for your desktop--for free.

Included within the basic PCLive Security package is a firewall, the open source ClamAV antivirus product, antispyware, a popup blocker, plus system cleaner(removes old temp files). PCLive will also check for the latest Microsoft Windows updates that haven't yet been applied to your PC. For a mere $4.95 a month, PCLive Premium Security includes all the basic PCLive Security along with Web content filtering, parental controls, disk maintenance and 24/7 live technical support. SecurityCoverage also offers users of their free PCLive service instant 24/7 technical support for a flat fee of $49.95 per session.

How does it work? Okay. The ClamAV product is designed for UNIX and Linux systems. It hasn't been independently tested by Windows-based antivirus testing labs. Also we found that PCLive runs three active processes on your desktop. A couple of times, for no apparent reason, the PCLMonitorService process consumed up to 53 percent of our system resources, considerably slowing our test PC.

No Internet Explorer in Windows 7 version for Europe

Microsoft is planning on shipping a version of Windows 7 to Europe that will not include Internet Explorer. This is according to a confidential memo that was sent to PC makers and obtained by CNET. It is likely that Microsoft is reacting to the European Union concerns that by bundling Internet Explorer with Windows 7 it is being anti-competitive in the browser market. Microsoft's lawyers responded by saying "Our decision to only offer IE separately from Windows 7 in Europe cannot, of course, preclude the possibility of alternative approaches emerging through Commission processes.

Internet Explorer is now an optional feature in Windows 7

Along with various other changes that are to be reflected in Windows 7 RC, here is a big change that is not in the list. From Windows 7 build 7048, Internet Explorer(IE) is an optional Windows feature and can be installed/uninstalled from Windows 7. This will be a welcoming (and surprising) news, especially to European Union and Opera who have accused Microsoft for not giving consumers a genuine choice of Web browsers. If IE is upgraded to version 8 in Vista (from version 7), users do get an option to uninstall IE 8, but not IE 7. IE 7 remains as integral component of Windows Vista which cannot be removed.

More Windows 7 E details emerge

Microsoft has revealed a few more details about Windows 7 E, the version of their next operating system that will be released in Europe without Internet Explorer. The information is primarily focused at developers who may be affected when creating applications that use Internet Explorer based controls but also provides some more general information. The details, posted on the Windows 7 for Developers blog, reveal that using Windows 7 E will be similar to using the full version of Windows 7 but with the Internet Explorer component disabled. This is also how they suggest that developers can test their software for compatibility with Windows 7 E, as builds of it are currently unavailable to testers.

According to Computer World, things are not looking good for European fans of Windows 7 and Internet Explorer. Microsoft has decided to remove Internet Explorer from versions of Windows 7 to be sold in Europe, the company is not offering an upgrade path from Vista. Also, although international exchange rates vary, the prices of Windows 7 do not look good for people paying in euros or pounds.
