neowin.net - 18.12.2008Beautiful Windows Vista icons a double-edged sword
I admit it. I'm an iconphile. Back in the Windows 3.0 days, I used to go and change all my Windows icons by hand. I thought this was pretty
impressive. Admittedly, it didn't help me pick up women for some reason.
Since then, icons have come a very long way. A VERY long way.
With Windows Vista, the end-user icon experience out of the box is beautiful. But from an icon creator's point of view, the lack of backward
compatibility and effort to support has gone up tremendously. As a result, we've seen a lot fewer custom icons made for Windows Vista than one might
have expected.
Microsoft made three decisions with Windows Vista that will forever affect the way we look at icon making on Windows.

Make OS X a little less smug
Its pretty clear that Apple left no stone unturned in Leopard, making changes and fixes throughout the new operating
system. Unfortunately, that also included an upgrade to its crucial smugness subsystem: the image you see above of an old school CRT monitor with a
blue screen of death is actually the not-so-subtle gag icon Leopard uses to represent Windows machines on your local network. (Is it any wonder why PC
and Mac fanboys tend to get in so many fights?) Granted, many Leopard beta users have seen this icon since the early releases, but we didnt actually
think the shipping version would include something so pompous and galling to the other 90%.
neowin.net - 31.10.2007Windows 7 tip: Recycle Bin on your Windows 7 Taskbar
I'm not exactly sure when it became cool to abandon the use of your operating system's desktop, but a growing number of people these days
prefer the "clean" look. Recent releases of Microsoft Windows seem to encourage this. By default, Windows Vista and 7 strip the desktop of all icons
but the Recycle Bin. Try as you may, ignoring this lone icon is impossible. Sure, you can hide it in just a few seconds, but at the cost of losing
quick access to deleted files. You could also drag the Recycle Bin icon to the taskbar, but then it will appear pinned under Windows Explorer --
requiring an extra click to open and offering half the functionality.

neowin.net - 15.09.2009Sam's Tip of the Week #5 - What's that song?
This has happened to everyone- you hear a song, absolutely love it, but have no idea what it is or who it's by. There are many mobile apps that will do that, but what if you're using your computer and hear, say, a song on a YouTube video that you like. Rather than cranking up your speakers and holding your phone near them, I have a better way.
First, download Tunatic from http://www.wildbits.com/tunatic/ (compatible with Windows and Mac OS X). This handy app can identify songs and then offer quick links to iTunes, where to get it as a ringtone, or lyrics for that song.
Tunatic will use your default audio input device to identify the song, which is probably your microphone (which doesn't get us any better results than a mobile device). We need to fix that, so here are instructions for the Mac OS and Windows since this is a cross-platform application.
Windows XP: Open the Start menu, choose Accessories, then Entertainment, and open Volume Control. Open up the Options menu and choose Properties. Select the Recording radio button, and place a checkmark next to "Stereo Mix" in the list below. Unfortunately, if this doesn't appear your hardware isn't capable of doing this. Now press OK and you should see the Recording Control window. Place a checkmark next to "Select" in the Stereo Mix section. Make sure the Stereo Mix volume is turned up. Now, open Tunatic, play the song you want to know about, and press the magnifying glass button in Tunatic.

winbeta.org - 20.12.2007Are Vista icons facing the wrong way ?
No doubt you’ve all seen the “Computer” icon in Windows Vista. Some of you might have even clicked on it and few of you probably
have a shortcut on your desktop. But has it ever occurred to you it’s facing the wrong direction, away from you? At least one guy did, and this
is just one of the minor details under scrutiny at the Windows UX Taskforce that is particularly fascinating.
The problem is, by default,
Windows displays icons from left to right. Assuming the user sits in the middle of the monitor, the icons should in fact face right towards you and
not the edge of the monitor. The only icon in Vista off the top of my head which does this correctly are the “folders” icon which open up
towards the right. This actually conflicts with the official user experience guidelines suggesting the perspective of icons face left.
If
this isn’t weird enough, the Windows XP’s icons and even conceptual Vista icons designed by Iconfactory faced the right (pun) way. For
some unknown reason, Microsoft designers decided to flip them. Mac OSX icons face directly at you - probably the best solution.

neowin.net - 23.12.2006Elevations Are Now Blocked in the User's Logon Path
Hi, Jim Hong, Program Manager on UAC, here again to tell you about a new change in the UAC user experience coming in RC1. Applications that start when the user logs on and that require elevation are now blocked in the logon path.
Without blocking applications from prompting for elevation in the user's logon path, both standard users and administrators would have to respond to a User Account Control dialog box on every log on . While this potentially becomes an annoyance for administrators, it is an unusable UI for standard users who cannot drive the UAC elevation prompt without having an administrator around to provide credentials. Furthermore, we advise users to be wary of prompts that appear without them taking an explicit action -- and prompts generated at startup go against that advice.
In RC1 and later, Windows Vista notifies the user if an application has been blocked by placing an icon in the system tray and providing a notification balloon during the startup sequence. See Fig. 1 for a visual of what this might look like:
