To some music lovers, the fact that Josh Groban's Noel was the highest-selling album of 2007 is all the proof they need that major-label music is

albums were sold, down 21.4 million from last year. A 20 percent drop in sales is more than a blip; it's serious trouble.

25.12.2007Mac OS X worm maker raps Apple on security
The anonymous researcher who
claims to have crafted a Mac
OS X worm said Tuesday that he
or she will report his
findings to Apple Inc., but
added that the Cupertino,
Calif. company "has a very
long way to go" on security.
Identified only as
the researcher behind the
Information
Security Sell Out blog, he
or she on Sunday announced
that a still-unpatched bug in
mDNSResponder, a component of
Apple's Bonjour automatic
network configuring service,
could be exploited by a worm.
Apple's May security update,
dubbed 2007-005, included a
fix for the mDNS bug.
"
is in the same
code base, obviously, but that
is where the similarity to the
recently patched issues
ends," said the Info Sec
researcher in an e-mail
interview. "When Apple fixed
the previous issues, they did
not take care of the entire
code base and there are a lot
of bugs there...some are
exploitable, like the one I am
using, while others are not.
But the fact remains that
Apple did a horrible job in
fixing this package." ..

ATI Radeon HD 3870 & 3850: A Return to Competition
Finally. We're finally getting somewhere interesting in the graphics industry. Although they're sure to return, the days of reviewing $600 graphics
card after $600 graphics card are on hiatus, and instead we're reviewing a new class of mainstream cards with earth-shattering performance.
NVIDIA's GeForce 8800 GT kicked off the trend, in one fell swoop making almost all of NVIDIA's product line obsolete thanks to the high
performance and low price tag (we'll talk about that last part shortly). But what we saw there wasn't a fluke, it was a preemptive strike against
AMD, who have been hard at work on an affordable GPU of their own.
This new product, like the 8800 GT, would be aimed squarely at
the $150 - $250 market segment, something both AMD and NVIDIA did a horrible job at with mainstream releases earlier this year (2600 and 8600 both
sucked guys).

The new urgency to fix online privacy
Eric J. Sinrod: A decade ago, I started writing about online privacy issues. At the time, legal colleagues told me that while they found the topic
interesting from an academic standpoint, it had no real world applications. They encouraged me instead to focus on "real" upcoming problems, like
Y2K.
Undeterred, I explained that there would come a time when good privacy translated into good business, and bad privacy meant
horrible business. That time has arrived.
Y2K came and went without much lasting effect. But privacy protection has become a real
world industry of its own. Unfortunately, privacy and security breaches regularly occur these days. Indeed, the recently concluded meeting of the
International Association of Privacy Professionals in San Francisco bore witness to just how important privacy issues have become to businesses,
government, educational institutions, and of course, individuals.

You Won't Believe Your Eyes When 3D TV Becomes Reality
Perfect 3D television and
movies without those horrible
glasses? They're closer than
you think. I'm sitting in
Paris and some butterflies are
fluttering towards me. Loads
of them, perfectly clearly. I
could allow one to land on my
hand, or catch one of the rose
petals being blown towards me
- except I can't, because
they're not real. They're
images on a TV in high
definition - and in perfect
3D. They look life-sized and
real, and I'm not wearing any
silly spectacles other than
the ones I wear all the
time.
People have
been working on convincing 3D
without the glasses for a long
time and the demo is
breathtaking. It's on a
prototype Philips TV, which
won't be available for a
while; it would cost Ł10,000
at the moment, but that's
expected to be vastly lower
when it reaches the mass
market. Philips isn't the
only company investigating the
possibilities;
Luxembourg-based SeeReal has
also made technological
developments in the area with
its Viewing Window Technology,
aiming to reduce the amount of
pixels you need before 3D
works.

AVG Anti-virus 7.5 Professional Released
After a short beta test, AVG
have released a new version of
their anti-virus product, here
is an excerpt from their press
release:
A
significant addition to the
AVG security software
portfolio, AVG Internet
Security 7.5, includes the
most recent anti-virus,
anti-spyware, anti-spam and
firewall technologies with
reliable automatic updates
while consuming a low level of
computer resources for
convenient use. In the AVG
Internet Security Network
Edition, Gristosft offers
centralized remote
administration, which allows
for remote installation,
updating and management of all
workstations and servers.
Grisoft's existing
portfolio for home, small and
medium business users is now
expanded to include AVG
Anti-Spyware 7.5 and AVG
Anti-Malware 7.5 products. AVG
Anti-Spyware 7.5 offers
protection against Trojans,
spyware, adware, dialers,
keyloggers and worms. The AVG
Anti-Malware program combines
the latest anti-spyware and
antivirus technologies within
a single, easy-to-use
interface.
I
couldn't actually find a
changelog between 7.0 and 7.5
but as the above press release
indicates they have released
six new versions of AVG
Anti-virus bringing it up to
fifteen different varieties of
product so if Vista product
versions have you confused you
better sit down.
I
installed 7.5 Professional as
I bought a licence as a
fallback for Symantec making
Norton more horrible than the
previous incarnation, I just
snapped. The interface in 7.5
is slightly different and has
joined the 21st century, I
haven't checked it out with
Windows Vista yet (5728 will
be checked) so will update
this post with its progress as
the 7.0 updater had issues
with Vista, although seems to
be fine if UAC is not
active.
There is no
estimated release date for the
free version at the moment.

New Red Orchestra Content Coming Soon - Again!
Red
Orchestra one of the
best first person shooters on
the market, will very soon,
once again get a nice content
update from its developers at
Tripwire Interactive. This is
the third (or fourth, I
forget) content addition to
the game since it was released
on Steam. This new update will
include two new vehicles and a
new map for the game. One of
the vehicles will be the
Panzerkampfwagen IV
Ausfuhrung H or better
known as the Pz IV H. The
other vehicle is a mystery, as
is the new map. Tripwire will
disclose more information on
them soon enough I'm sure,
but for now they are just
offering a small tease with
some images of the Pz IV
H.
For those of you who have
never heard of Red Orchestra,
or don't keep up with the
game, it is a WW2 FPS that
is mainly based around
realism. It is probably
one of the most tactically
sound and terrifically fun WW2
shooters to date, even if it
doesn't run on some uber
awesome engine, not that the
Unreal 2.5 engine is horrible
mind you. They offered a free
weekend some months back, but
for now if you are even
slightly interested in a great
FPS with awesome gameplay and
realism, I suggest checking it
out on Steam. It is only
ษ and there are tons of
custom maps around, along with
bot support of course. There
are still a ton of players who
play it, and you can find me
playing it quite often. In any
case, check out the screens,
and go to the Red Orchestra
homepage to check it
out.

Windows OS is already in its planning stage and her work being engaging with various customers and partners, she is already discussing the plan and
strategy around them.
