Verizon says HD video on demand in works

Verizon Communications said it plans to offer high-definition video on demand over its advanced Internet and video service called FiOS, although it has not yet set a date.

Verizon is currently rolling out video and Internet services over an all-fiber network to compete against cable television companies' all-in-one packages of video, Internet and phone services.

Japanese electronics firm Fujitsu today announced the release of what it believes is the industry’s first single-chip video processor capable of handling true high-definition H.264 video in real time.

H.264 is the latest high-performance video compressor/decompress or “codec” that offers high-quality video with comparatively little data. It is used by Apple on its video-capable iPods and is part of the video standards for both HD DVD and Blu-ray movie disc formats.

Broadcom goes high-definition on cell phone chip

Broadcom on Tuesday announced a low-power multimedia processor that it said will give cell-phone users access to high-definition video playback, 3D gaming and 12-megapixel camera capabilities without sacrificing battery life.



The VideoCore III processor is part of Broadcom's effort to power a new generation of mobile phones that deliver a high-quality multimedia experience, the company said in a press release.



The company's BCM2727 processor will be the first to incorporate Broadcom's VideoCore III multimedia architecture. The processor supports high-definition camcorder functionality, which allows users to encode and decode high-definition video in 720p mode, with 720 lines progressively scanned. It supports 12-megapixel digital camera processing, with an on-chip image signal processor for color correction, image stabilization and red-eye reduction. On-board 2D and 3D graphics accelerators are designed to provide a rich multimedia experience and support more than 50 image and video standards and codecs, the company said.

Panasonic: 'Blu-ray will win, be certain'

Panasonic has made clear its stance in the high-definition war. "Blu-Ray will succeed to become the predominant high-definition format, be certain," Joachim Reinhart, chief operating officer and president of Panasonic Europe, told journalists at a press conference at IFA 2007 in Berlin this afternoon.



Earlier Reinhart had explained the new ethos within the company - how people are going to "live in high definition", with everything in their home. He's not just talking about consumer electronics, but white goods and other appliances too - all connected up to a wireless network.

Polycom to launch desktop HD video conferencing

Polycom Inc said on Wednesday it will launch a desktop computer version of its high-definition video conferencing product, aiming to expand its client base from top executives to a wider range of users.



Polycom Chief Executive Robert Hagerty said in an interview that the new product, due to be unveiled early next week, will be technologically similar to its high-definition "HDX 9000" series, but less expensive and geared for desktop use.

BBC courted for Xbox link

Microsoft is courting the BBC as it plans to launch its digital television and video service in Europe.



The software giant is intent on turning its Xbox 360 video-games machine into a digital entertainment hub offering films, TV shows and high-definition programmes. It already offers video content in America via its Xbox 360 video-games console.



Launched last November, Xboxs video service has content deals with big Hollywood studios and television networks that include CBS, Disney, Fox, MTV, Paramount and Warner.

Blu-ray, HD DVD topple VHS sales

High definition discs became the second most popular video medium in the first half of 2007, officially overtaking legacy format VHS.



According to a research piece from trade publication Video Business, sales of Blu-ray Discs and HD DVDs combined in the first half of 2007 beat VHS. During the last six months of 2006, the now-archaic format was still edging out the high definition newcomers.



By 2005, VHS's market share in the home video market had fallen to around 15%, and has continued to fall ever since. Blu-ray and HD DVD overtaking the dying format was more or less expected, but through the end of 2006 the high-def competitors were still behind.

Microsoft sells ESPN video on Xbox 360

Microsoft Corp. has added college basketball and other ESPN programming to the growing lineup of video content available for download to its Xbox 360 video game console.



Microsoft and ESPN said people can purchase complete NCAA basketball and football games, the X Games sports competitions and programs like ESPN's "Madden Nation," which chronicles a competition of "Madden NFL" video game players, from the Xbox Live Web site.



Xbox 360 users can buy commercial-free standard-definition versions of select NCAA games for $3, and high-definition versions for $4.50, within 48 hours of the game's conclusion. ESPN TV shows, like the other TV content on the Xbox Live download site, cost $2 for standard-definition and $3 for high-def versions.
