Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet for Windows XP

The Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet adds a new 'Color' item to the Windows control panel, providing a single place to view and edit color management settings in Windows XP. Using it, you can install and uninstall color profiles, change color profile associations for displays, printers and scanners, view detailed properties for color profiles (including a 3D rendering of the color space gamut), and rename color profiles, keeping the filenames and "internal" names consistent.
This tool also enables Windows to automatically adjust the gamut curve of the display when a color profile containing gamut table information is set as the default profile for the display. Typically, such profiles are created by custom monitor calibration tools, such as those available from ColorVision, GretagMacbeth, and X-Rite. If a color profile has this information, it is shown with an asterisk (*) in the user interface.

Using the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet, you can:

* Install and uninstall ICC color profiles
* Inspect, rename, and compare two different color profiles
* View a 3D graphics plot of color profile color gamuts
* Associate color profiles with devices such as printers, monitors, and scanners
* Apply custom color gamut adjustments to one or more displays ???on the fly???
* Set up display calibration reminders at intervals you specify

Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

Hot on the heels of Wikipedia's decision to begin using editors for certain pages, they've announced another method of attempting to keep things accurate on their website. According to Wired, the organization will begin color coding the text of their entries in orange, to indicate untrustworthiness, based on a couple of factors. The feature will be aptly named "WikiTrust", and will color the text after analyzing the reliability of the author in question, as well as how long the text has been on the entry. Virgil Griffith, a Wikipedia software developer and neuroscientist at the California Institute of Technology, said, "They've hit on the fundamentally Darwinian nature of Wikipedia.

Black Maximized Windows Borders Fixed

The Windows team posted an exciting post on their new Shell:Revealed blog, giving people who wanted the black maximized window borders to disappear a rest, because the problem is apparently fixed starting from today's builds. Due to the very short time limit until the upcoming RC2 build, we're still unsure whether the final version distributed to testers will feature that change.

The "fix", although quite welcome, isn't really what people asked for: "In the end, we decided that we like the black and think it is the right thing to do, but we want to respect the user's color choice for users who bother to make a change. So - starting in today's build, we have significantly backed off the amount of black that is mixed in with the user's color for maximized windows". Basically, they are offering people the choice to customize the color, although there will still be a black shade to it. The fix isn't apparently very noticeable on the default color, though it is most useful on strong colors.

Microsoft gives bar codes a splash of color

Microsoft finds monochromatic stripes dull, and has put its weight behind a colored bar code format. The color bar code is being targeted especially for use on commercial media such as movies, video games and other recordings. Microsoft said the High Capacity Color Bar Code could start showing up on DVDs by the end of this year, thanks to a deal it has signed with an organization that helps coordinate product labelling for audiovisual works. " We use color to store more information ," said Gavin Jancke, director of engineering for Microsoft's research labs. Jancke is the creator of the new bar code format, which uses either four or eight hues to pack more data into less space. The new bar code also uses small triangles, as opposed to traditional squares. The new bar code is mean to allow DVDs and their packages to offer added security or, potentially, links to a movie trailer or other bonus features.

The downside for color labels is the required high-quality printing, not to mention standard bar code scanners also won't read the codes. Jancke insists this bar code is different than the failed CueCat, which embedded bar code links in print publications. " The CueCat required specific hardware that needed to be attached to a PC ," Jancke said, noting that the Microsoft-developed bar code could be read by devices consumers already have, such as a Web cam or cell phone camera.
