WinHEC: Vista Specs Still Murky for Many

Customers who want more information about the system specs that PCs will require to run the forthcoming Windows Vista operating system will get some, but not much, help from Microsoft at the company's conference for hardware engineers, which starts tomorrow.

At Microsoft's annual Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, or WinHEC, the company will discuss a "Get Ready" for Vista program it launched late last week, which outlines the hardware requirements to run low-end and premium versions of Windows Vista.

However, Microsoft expects the Get Ready program to pretty much speak for itself, says Mike Burke, a Microsoft product manager, and will not discuss it in "any comprehensive detail" at the conference.

Final Windows Vista System Specs Revealed

Microsoft just relealed the final Windows Vista Hardware Requirements. There you go, you'll need the following machine to run Vista:

Minimal Specs (Called Vista-Ready PCs):
-800Mhz Processor
-512 MB of RAM
-DirectX 9-Capable Graphics Processor

Recommended Specs (Called Premium-Ready PCs):
-1 Ghz Processor
-128 MB Graphics Memory, numerous other graphics-related requirements
-1 GB System Memory

Microsoft also plans to make an advertisement campaign around those required machines, in order to make people be sure their machine will meet those requirements, and this campaign should be revealed on May 18th, in this case tomorrow.

This announcement was made to prepare the also planned WinHEC release of Windows Vista Beta 2 (Supposedly Build 5384, last known compiled build as of today), which will likely be made public in the days following its release at WinHEC.

These requirements are about what was expected, maybe a little bit below. As previously announced, most PCs sold within last year might be Vista-Ready, though very few fully meet the Premium-Ready requirements.

Is Your PC 'Vista Capable'? The Answer is Maybe

Microsoft will start rolling out in April new "Vista Capable" logos for PCs, despite the fact that it still has yet to release the final hardware specs for Windows Vista. As noted over on the InsideMicrosoft blog, "The Vista Capable page at Microsoft TechNet explains that PCs that are Capable must pass the current Windows XP certification, and then meet certain CPU/RAM/GPU requirements in order to bear the logo." But a Microsoft spokesman added this caveat: "The Windows Vista Capable program does not represent minimum hardware requirements for the different versions of Windows Vista ? we look forward to providing additional information regarding minimum hardware requirements for Windows Vista and the Windows Vista logo program in the coming months."

Microsoft offers guidelines for next-gen UMPCs

Microsoft still thinks there's a bright future for Windows-based ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs), the small-form factor PCs that haven’t exactly taken the world by storm.

At the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Los Angeles this week, Microsoft officials outlined some of the “possibilities” the company sees for next-generation UMPCs that will be optimized to run Windows Vista.

Development Manager Vikram Madan noted that the next-gen specs he outlined during his talk on May 16 were “guidelines of what is possible, not promises.” (However, Fujitsu launched at WinHEC a new Windows Vista Business UMPC including many of these next-gen features.)..

Intel Enables Hardware T&L on G965

Intel has released a pre-beta for Broadwater G965 and GM965 chipsets that enable hardware transform and lighting.

Hardware transform and lighting were touted with the Intel GMA X3000 and X3100 integrated graphics cores, however, current release drivers did not enable the feature, despite Intel demonstrating games running with hardware T&L on GMA X3x00 hardware.

Now nearly a year after the Broadwater launch, users can take advantage of hardware T&L on G965 and GM965 hardware in Windows XP. Windows Vista users need not apply, as Intel does not have the hardware T&L enabling Vista driver ready yet. Intel promises Windows Vista hardware T&L drivers in the ścoming weeks.ť..

Tim Sweeney on UT3 Specs & Peformance

http://www.beyondunreal.com/da edalus/singlepost.php?id=10581 >Beyond Unreal noticed a http://forums.epicgames.com/sh owthread.php?t=571019>thread on the Epic Megaboards that translates a Tim Sweeney interview with German magazine, PC Games Hardware. Here are a couple juicy samples:

PCGH: How do the general hardware requirements look like?
Epic: Since optimization work is still ongoing, these details may change every day. Generally speaking, the game runs quite smooth with DX9 hardware released by NVidia and Ati since 2006. On high-end cards, including the DX10 models, UT3 runs incredibly smooth already. Additionally, we also support shader 2.0 graphics hardware, with only a few technical limitations.

PCGH: How exactly are you utilizing the functions of DirectX 10?
Epic: Unreal Tournament 3 will ship with full DX10 support, with multi-sampling being the biggest visible benefit of the new graphics interface. Additionally, with DX10 under Vista we have the possibility to use the video memory more efficiently, to be able to display textures with a higher grade of detail as it would be possible with the DX9 path of Vista. ..

Microsoft Accommodating Eee With Lightweight XP

In what could be a first Microsoft is working to create a special build of Windows, just because Windows doesn't run very well on a certain computer. ASUS' runaway success Eee PC is now 'officially' available with Windows XP, but (according to APC magazine) is not exactly a great experience. There are none of the nice pre-loaded apps that come with the Linux version, for example. And XP has some real problems coping with the screen size and limited system specs of the unit. As a result, ASUS says it is going back to Microsoft and working on a special XP build that will be lightweight and more suited to UMPCs.
