17.05.2007Microsoft's JPEG Replacement
Format Unveiled
Microsoft unveiled yesterday a
replacement format to JPEG,
which it judges as "Too
instable juridically". The
format, named Windows Media
Photo, as one can expect since
Windows Media Player now reads
photos, is announced as
revolutionary, because of its
powerful compression levels.
The best
quality format should not
cause any quality loss (hence
the "lossless" name
Microsoft gave it) while being
about twice smaller than its
JPEG counterpart. The lowest
one, while obviously having
slightly lower quality level,
though not quite as bad as
JPEG, by eliminating most
artifacts, the picture could
then be as small as 1/25 of
the original uncompressed
picture.
Microsoft is mainly working
at eliminating the so-called
artifacts, frequent in
JPEG-compressed images, and
hopes that its new format can
seduce the market, something
many others, namely JPEG2000,
Jpeg Pro, and Adobe's own
format, DNG, miserably
failed.
Microsoft made official
specifications for this format
available publicly, in
Microsoft Word format, as
Version 1.0 of those
specifications.

27.05.2006Microsoft places FeedSync under Open Specifications Promise
Kip Kniskern: Received a nice email today from Steven Lees, a member of the CSA Concept Development Team at Microsoft, announcing that Microsoft has
placed FeedSync under the
Open Specifications Promise. According

"As I think I mentioned at Mix n Mash, were very interested in having many independent implementations of
FeedSync. The spec itself is under a Creative Commons license, and weve always said that we want people to have royalty-free use of the spec as well.
Because Ive heard some general questions from people about spec licensing, and because weve filed patents on technology innovations related to
FeedSync, we wanted to make the royalty free message even more clear, so weve placed the FeedSync spec under the Microsoft Open Specification
Promise."
Basically, the Open Specifications Promise is an even more open specification than Creative Commons. From the Microsoft.com

12.12.2008Vista graphics drivers to be
more stable than XP drivers,
ATI says
San Francisco (CA) -
Graphics drivers developed for
Vista, Microsoft's next
generation operating system,
will be far more stable than
their Windows XP-based
counterparts, and not crash
the operating system anymore,
an executive of graphics chip
developer ATI told Tom's
Hardware
Guide.
Ben
Bar-Haim, vice president of
ATI's software division, told
us consumers will be able to
identify graphics cards
supporting Vista by way of a
"Vista ready" logo, which
will likely appear in multiple
flavors indicating different
feature levels. The release of
Microsoft's new operating
system may still be at least
one year out, but hardware
manufacturers, including ATI,
are already gearing up for yet
another certification and logo
round: "Vista ready" will be
the catch-phrase promoting
hardware products as a safe
investment.
ATI's
new Xpress 200 integrated
graphics processor (IGP) has
already claimed dibs on the
phrase. Its specifications
appear to meet Microsoft's
current minimum graphics
requirements, which include
support for DirectX 9 and at
least 64 Mb of graphics
memory. "Vista ready",
however, does not necessarily
mean that users will be able
to run all 3D effects.
According to Ben Bar-Haim,
vice president in ATI's
software division, there is a
good chance that there will be
at two "Vista ready" logos -
one covering "basic"
requirements and the other one
"full" feature capability.
Bar-Haim said that "two logos
is the concept right now,"
but the final marketing would
still depend on "further OEM
input." ..
