can preserve your settings from the previous OS installation.

Launched Nov. 15,
the Google Apps Email Migration API is an application programming interface that lets software developers create tools that can move e-mail from any
data source to Google Apps' Premier, Education or Partner editions.
The new software opens up e-mail migration to the broadest
range of possibilities and builds on an e-mail migration tool Google launched June 25 that lets administrators move e-mail from their IMAP mail
systems to Google Apps.

Timing your Windows Server 2008 migration
Gary Olsen: IT managers who are getting ready to move to Windows Server 2008 from Windows 2000 or 2003 need to justify that the time is right for
migrating.
Migrating to a new version of Windows, or to a new version of Office, comes with inherent risks. There are always
undiscovered bugs in any software product. Over time, those bugs are flushed out and fixed. The later you migrate, the safer you are, but then you
don't get the benefits of the new features either.
I recall one instance where a customer had large SQL Server databases hosted
on a storage system that was hosted on a new generation of server. The customer's day-to-day business relied on employee access to the databases. A
hardware failure caused by the migration took a few days to resolve. While the database was down, the CIO was pressing for a quick resolution because
he claimed to be losing US$1 million per hour. When you multiply thousands of employees' salaries, not to mention lost business, I'm sure he wasn't
far off on his claim.

Vista SP1 fails to spark migration
Microsoft's latest efforts to persuade customers to upgrade to its much-maligned Vista operating system have met with a cool response from users.
Historically, Microsoft's first service pack for one of its marquee products – such as Windows – provides the impetus for users to
upgrade. As Gartner analyst, Stephen Kleynhans recently noted, customers see SP1 as the sign that the OS has reached maturity and is ready for
enteprise deployment.
But even the offer of free support for using installing Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) and tools to lower implementation
cost, the user response has been one of stony indifference. Vista SP1 includes a number of fixes for bugs that have plagued the operating system, as
well as improved support for drivers. It initially became available to download from Microsoft's website and will be included as part of the
Window's Update feature from mid-April.

Survey: Half 'Have No Plans' To Deploy Vista
Migration to the Windows Vista operating system apparently isn't generating much enthusiasm among IT personnel in the enterprise. A survey conducted in November of last year by market research firm King
Research supports that notion. The study found that "90 percent of participants have concerns about the migration to Windows Vista."
What's worse, from Microsoft's perspective, is that future plans to deploy Vista seemed stunted too. Roughly half (53 percent) of
respondents said that they "have no plans to deploy Vista at this time." Other plans for Vista included installing it for testing (18 percent), new
machines only (14 percent) and other uses (two percent). Just 13 percent said they planned to be fully deployed on Vista.
