12.10.2007Engineering Windows 7 : Disk Space
Windows disk space consumption has trended larger over time. While not desirable, the degree to which it's been allowed is due in large part to
ever-increasing hard drive capacity, combined with a customer need and engineering focus that focused heavily on recover ability, data protection,
increasing breadth of device support, and demand for innovative new features. However, the proliferation of Solid State Drives (SSDs) has challenged
this trend, and is pushing Windows 7 to consider disk "footprint" in a much more thoughtful way and take that into account for Windows 7.

23.03.2009New ultra-portable notebook
tops 6 hours of battery life,
Sharp claims
Huntington Beach (CA)
- Sharp today announced the
M4000 Widenote notebook that
combines a 13.3-inch screen
and a Pentium M processor in
an ultra-portable package that
can deliver more than 6 hours
of operating time on one
battery charge, according to
the
manufacturer.
Inching closer to the
industry's goal of 8 hours of
battery time in notebooks,
Sharp today announced a new
model that adds itself to a
growing of mobile computers
that are capable of delivering
twice the battery time of
common thin and light
notebooks. With a promised six
hours, the M4000 Widenote
could be among the currently
most power efficient notebooks
on the market.
The
M4000 is based on an Intel
Centrino package with a
Pentium M 740 (1.73 GHz)
processor at its heart.
According to Sharp, the
additional battery time is not
achieved through adding more
battery capacity, but adding
more flexibility to power
management. The "Advanced
Power Management" feature
allows the user to extend
control over power draining
subsystems of a notebook:
Instead of managing just four
devices, as provided by
Windows' default, Sharp's
system controls up to 11
subsystems: LCD display
(brightness, backlight and
refresh rate), harddrive,
optical disk drive, wireless
LAN, system standby, suspend
to disk, system wallpaper,
audio and CPU performance.
According to Sharp, users are
given three profiles of power
management, each offering the
ability to configure eleven
different
settings.
Standard
features of the 3.7-pound
M4000 include a 13.3-inch
screen, an 80 GByte harddrive,
and a DVD burner. The notebook
will ship later this month
with pricing set at $1800...

06.08.2008Engineering Windows 7: Disk Space
Steven Sinofsky: This post is about disk space and the disk space consumed by Windows 7. Disk space is the sort of thing where everyone wants to use
less, but the cost of using a bit more relative to the benefits has generally been a posiitve tradeoff. Things have changed recently with the
availability of solid-state drives in capacities significantly smaller than the trend in spinning drives. Traditionally most all software, including
Windows, would not hesitate to consume a 100MB on a specific (justified) need when looking at a 60GB (or 1,500GB ) drive; with desirable machines
shipping with 16GB of solid-state storage, we are looking carefully at the disk space used by Windowsboth at setup time and also as a PC ages. We
also had a specific
session at WinHEC on solid-state
drives that might be interesting to folks. This post is authored by Michael Beck, a program manager in the core OS deployment feature team.

20.11.2008WordPress: Free Space to 3GB!
Much of the work we do at Automattic is behind the scenes, infrastructure you’ll (hopefully) never notice or see, but we’re always
thinking about how the improvements we make to the foundation of the site will allow us to build more interesting things on top of it.
Today, one of those developments comes to fruition — everyone’s free upload space has been increased 60x from 50mb to 3,000mb. To get
the same amount of space at our nearest competitor, Typepad, you’d pay at least $300 a year. Blogger only gives you 1GB. We’re doing
the same thing for free.
