Water-cooled Graphics Card Represents Vista's High-end

In hopes there's a trend to capitalize on, graphics card manufacturer BFG is attaching a water cooler onto its top-of-the-line nVidia 8800 GTX-based graphics card, then leveraging its presence as an excuse to crank up the volume even further. If a BFG 8800 GTX OC-equipped system ranks a "5" on the new Vista WSPR scale, then maybe it's the company's hope that your computer currently ranks about a "2."..

Ultra High-End PSU Roundup

As PC systems are demanding more and more power, the power supply manufacturers are reacting by releasing units rated for higher power output. We can all thank NVIDIA and ATI, among others, for this trend, as we have seen an escalation in ridiculously high demands for power supplies with the latest graphics chips. That this power is in most cases unnecessary should be clear to everyone who owns such a card or wants to buy one.

One reason such requirements are overkill is that the resolution you are running is largely responsible for higher GPU requirements, which in turn leads to more power hungry systems. If you are running a top-end video card (or two) at just 1280x1024, much of the performance potential is going to waste. Still, multiple GPUs under load will still require a beefy PSU, generally starting at 400W and going up from there, depending on the rest of the system. If you're running a 30" LCD on the other hand - particularly with overclocking - we have seen power requirements break 600W in worst-case scenarios.

Intel planning to enter discrete graphics card market in 2008

Sources from multiple graphics card vendors have confirmed that Intel has approached them to lay down plans to enter the discrete graphics card market for desktop PCs. The new products from Intel would be positioned as direct competitors to AMD's ATI Radeon and Nvidia's GeForce series of cards.

At this stage all plans are still rather vague, according to the sources, with Intel scheduled to deliver a more complete roadmap and specifications in the fourth quarter of this year.

However, according to most of the sources, Intel will aim for the mid-range market in the initial stages with pricing targeted around US$300. In the current market, graphics cards at the high-end are priced at around US$800...

Final Windows Vista System Specs Revealed

Microsoft just relealed the final Windows Vista Hardware Requirements. There you go, you'll need the following machine to run Vista:

Minimal Specs (Called Vista-Ready PCs):
-800Mhz Processor
-512 MB of RAM
-DirectX 9-Capable Graphics Processor

Recommended Specs (Called Premium-Ready PCs):
-1 Ghz Processor
-128 MB Graphics Memory, numerous other graphics-related requirements
-1 GB System Memory

Microsoft also plans to make an advertisement campaign around those required machines, in order to make people be sure their machine will meet those requirements, and this campaign should be revealed on May 18th, in this case tomorrow.

This announcement was made to prepare the also planned WinHEC release of Windows Vista Beta 2 (Supposedly Build 5384, last known compiled build as of today), which will likely be made public in the days following its release at WinHEC.

These requirements are about what was expected, maybe a little bit below. As previously announced, most PCs sold within last year might be Vista-Ready, though very few fully meet the Premium-Ready requirements.

Windows 7 Beta 1 has problems with XP Display Drivers (XDDM)

I've been enjoying Windows 7 so much over the past week, that I've been evangelizing it to all of my friends. One friend with a Dell Inspiron 710m decided to take the plunge. Windows 7 installation went well, but we can't find any compatible display drivers for the Intel 855gm graphics card. The graphics card in question doesn't support Windows Vista or Window 7's new WDDM driver model, but Windows Vista shipped with XDDM drivers for this card out of the box. I feel that Windows 7 should have all of the same in-box drivers as Vista, and it's a bummer that this one is not included.

Windows Vista System Requirements Released

Microsoft has updated its Get Ready Web site to include the minimum system requirements to run Windows Vista. A Windows Vista Capable PC must include at least a CPU running at 800MHz, 512 MB of RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics card capable of at least 800x600, a CD-ROM drive and a 20 GB HDD with at least 15 GB free for the install. Of course, systems with bare minimum specifications will be unable to run Vista in the Aero interface.

In order a PC to be certified as "Windows Vista Premium Ready," it must have at least a 1 GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, a DirectX 9 graphics with a WDDM driver, 128 MB of graphics memory, Pixel Shader 2.0, DVD-ROM drive, a sound card, internet access and 40 GB of hard drive capacity with 15 GB free space. For Windows XP, users who did not meet the minimal requirements for XP Home (300 MHz, 128 MB) were still able to install and run the operating system, albeit rather slowly. It remains to be seen if Windows Vista will allow installs on machines lesser than minimal specification.

Budget & Mid-Range Graphics Card round-up

Gamers will often find that there is a wide range of graphics cards to choose from, especially when buying a mid-range product that sits below the $200 price mark. However the trouble comes in determining just how much they need to spend in order to play the games they love and then reserve a bit of legroom for the titles to come. The sub-$200 graphics card market is particularly strong at the moment, with products such as the Radeon HD 4850 and GeForce 9800 GTX+ existing well within this price bracket. There is also the Radeon HD 4830 and GeForce 9800 GT graphics cards priced at around $120.

Direct3D WARP10 to enable you to play DX10 Crysis using software renderer only, albeit slowly

Direct3D backwards compatibility has always been "you get what your graphics cards run". For example, Crysis may be a Direct3D 10 game, but if you only have a Direct3D 9-level graphics card, it might only make your jaws open instead of hitting the floor. Sapphire Demonstrates HD 2600 Dual

Sapphire Technology is demonstrating the follow-up to the X1950 Pro Dual at Computex 2007. The new graphics card is based on AMDs recently announced -- but not shipping -- ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics processor. The product is still in development and unnamed. However, the prototype card features two ATI Radeon HD 2600 GPUs in CrossFire mode.

The two GPUs are joined together by the same PLX PCIe bridge chip as the Sapphire X1950 Pro Dual. Each ATI Radeon HD 2600 GPU feeds off its own pool of memory, as with two separate cards operating in CrossFire. This time around, Sapphire has opted to equip the dual ATI Radeon HD 2600 graphics card with quad DVI outputs instead of dual DVI and dual VGA.

The card also features internal CrossFire connectors for multi-card quad CrossFire configurations. Sapphire expects to have quad CrossFire drivers ready for the card in the future for quad HD 2600 action. ..

Dedicated Graphics-Card Power Supply Announced

Do graphics cards need their own power supplies? Sirtec believes that they do. At the Computex show here, the company is pitching a dedicated power supply for the latest generation of graphics cards. So far, the company has not signed any distribution agreements, but company representatives say they're hopeful.

The "High Power" PSU will ship in three different ranges: 350, 400, and 620 watts, enough to power an individual graphics card or a pair running in SLI mode.

Today's graphics cards are powered by the PCI Express bus, and often an additional power connector that runs from the same system power supply. Sirtek's argument is that next-generation PCI Express 2.0 systems could require about 300 watts per card, and that even the increased power limits offered by the PCI Express 2.0 standard won't be enough to adequately power those cards. In addition, the system PSU could become overstressed; it makes more sense to divide the power supplied to the system and cards over multiple units, a Sirtec spokeswoman said. ..

Nvidia asks card makers to reduce manufacturing costs of 8800 GT cards

Nvidia recently contacted its graphics card partners asking them to reduce the number PCB board layers used in GeForce 8800 GT-based graphics cards from ten to six in order to reduce manufacturing costs and so lower the card's ASP (average selling price) in the market. The redesign would allow the Nvidia cards to compete in terms of pricing with AMD's Radeon HD 3800 series products, according to sources at graphics card makers.

Although the Radeon HD 3800 series was launched three weeks later than the GeForce 8800 GT, Radeon 3800 demand has started to pick up, bringing the market shares of Nvidia and AMD from 90% and 10%, originally, to 70% and 30%.

If the PCB layers are reduced from ten to six, graphics card makers are expected to save more than US$10 for each card, which would allow the Nvidia products to go into price competition with those of AMD.
