03.09.2009AMD plans GPGPU SDK updates including DirectX 11 support
AMD has announced that they planning new updates to its SDK to further increase the ease and efficiently of software development using future versions
of the Stream SDK. The improvements will reduce time and effort needed to produce GPU accelerated applications running on multiple platforms using
industry standard API’s and enhanced support for C/C++
Through a series of upgrades over the next 18 months AMD will add full
support for DirectX 11. DirectX 11 is expected to build upon the already outstanding performance of DirectX 10.1 for 3-D graphics rendering and gaming
control.
It is also being designed to introduce a host of new technologies aimed at making it easier for programmers to create general
purpose graphics processing (GPGPU) accelerated applications that can run on any Windows Vista powered platform.

Intel has revealed that it sees no place in the future of computing for general purpose GPU (GPGPU) programming models such as Nvidias CUDA, which has
enabled Stanford's Nvidia GPU folding client, saying that programmers dont have the time to learn how to program for radical new architectures.
In a Q&A session after announcing Intels 40th birthday, we asked Intels senior vice president and co-general manager of Intel
Corporation's Digital Enterprise Group, Pat Gelsinger, where he saw GPGPU languages such as CUDA in the future. He said that they would be nothing
more than ˜interesting footnotes in the history of computing annals.

02.07.2008DX11 Will Be Included With 7
Despite what was talked about this week, it has been confirmed that DirectX 11 will be included with Windows 7.
Here are a few notes from
PCGH:
"One of the APIs, Direct 3D 11, has been revealed to include GPGPU, tessellation and improved multi-threading support, the latter
meaning better gaming for those who use multi-core processors. Tessellation and Shader Model 5.0 will require hardware which supports
the new
API, but for the stubborn and/or cheap folk, parts of Direct3D 11 will be supported on 9/10/10.1-class hardware."
Also, unlike the
release of DX10 relating to XP, Vista users will be able to take advantage of DX11 too, because there will also be a Vista release.
This
will most likely make DX11 more widely used than DX10 simply because it's available on more platforms.

19.02.2009General Purpose Computing on GPU sometime after 2010
An executive from Advanced
Micro Devices said that while
both ATI, graphics product
group of AMD, as well as
Nvidia Corp. have been talking
about general purpose
computing on graphics
processing units (GPGPU) for
years, the capability will
only become popular sometime
after 2010, when more advanced
compilers become available and
after Microsoft releases its
DirectX 11 in 2009.
Even though graphics
processing units (GPUs) pack
much more computing power than
traditional central processing
units (CPUs), in order to take
advantage that performance,
software must be specifically
tailored for GPUs. As a
result, only some programs can
benefit from increased
processing horse power of GPUs
now due to the virtual absence
of tools that help software
developers to create programs
that rely on GPUs. However,
this is going to change in
three years, said Giuseppe
Amato, sales & marketing
technical director at AMD in
EMEA region. In fact, besides
tools that help to develop
GPGPU software, the world's
second largest maker of x86
processors also expects the
emerge of special real-time
compilers (akin to those used
in drivers for GPUs nowadays)
that will be able to choose
whether to compute on a CPU or
a GPU cores.

17.07.2007AMD Talks GPGPU and "Fusion"
In an interview with Italian
media, AMD Executive Giuseppe
Amato, Technical Director of
Sales & Marketing EMEA,
discussed AMD's current
market position and future
products.
In the
interview, Amato sheds some
more light on the structure of
AMD's upcoming Fusion
processors. A misconception
that Amato notes is that
Fusion processors will not
only be available in
single-chip flavors, but also
mutli-chip formats. Two Fusion
processors linked together
would allow for parallel GPUs.
He says that AMD has still not
solidified the future plans of
Fusion yet, but indicates it
would be very likely to see a
Fusion processor with a GPU
and CPU connected through a
CrossFire-like interface --
and have a total TDP of less
than 120 Watts.
Amato
also praises the flexibility
of the Fusion processor in the
interview and tells Hardware
Upgrade that it will allow AMD
to "integrate a specific
number of GPU and CPU cores
depending on the customer and
the uses for which they will
use the chip. ..

17.07.2007Is Intel's 'Penryn' Chip Hiding Graphics Support?
It might not make much
difference to the end user,
but a tiny instruction in
Intel's upcoming SSE-4
instruction set included in
the "Penryn" processor might
be the first step on Intel's
road toward enhancing its CPUs
with graphics
capabilities.
Much of the discussion of
"Penryn" – Intel's first
45-nm CPU, probably due by the
end of the year – here at
the Microprocessor Forum
rehashed announcements Intel
has previously disclosed, such
as the addition of a Deep
Power Down state as well as
the disclosure that it will
contain new SSE-4 multimedia
instructions.
One of
those instructions, a
"streaming load
instruction," might be
Intel's answer to the
general-purpose GPU (GPGPU)
proposals being put forth by
AMD's ATI division as well as
Nvidia, Intel executives said.
AMD, meanwhile, has put
forward a strategy to bring
the graphics processor and
general purpose CPU together
by 2009, a strategy it calls
"Fusion"...

02.11.2007AMD Drives Adoption of Industry Standards in GPGPU Software Development
AMD today announced efforts to help further increase the ease and efficiency of software development using AMD Streamâ„¢ processing with an extensive

The improvements are designed to reduce
the time and effort needed to produce GPU accelerated applications that run on multiple platforms, by expanding support for industry standard
application programming interfaces (APIs) and providing enhanced support for C/C++.
Through a series of updates to the SDK
scheduled over the course of the next 18 months, AMD plans to add full support for DirectX 11, the next-generation suite of advanced APIs from

ATI Plans Expects DirectX 11 Chips Next Year
ATI, graphics products group of Advanced Micro Devices, said at Ceatec trade-show in Japan that its expects DirectX 11-compatible graphics processing
units (GPUs) in 2009, which may be considered as intention to release a new breed of chips that support new application programming interface. In
addition, the company predicts prosperity of general purpose computing on GPU (GPGPU).
AMD’s ATI unit outlined several expectations
for the consumer 3D graphics industry in 2009. Among the highlights are GPU manufacturing transition to 40nm process technology and widespread usage
of GDDR5 memory standard, which will drive performance of graphics chips considerably up, something, which will allow game developers to create video
games with more sophisticated effects

ClearSpeed sets its sights on the final frontier
Longtime Ars readers will recall that ClearSpeed Technology came out of the gate back in 2003 with a ton of hype behind it when the company announced
a many-core prototype chip that could do 25.6 GFLOPS on 2W. That was a lot of floating-point performance on a single chip in the days before the GPGPU
wars really kicked off.
But in spite of its stellar numbers, ClearSpeed's first major commercial design win didn't happen
until 2006, when ClearSpeed coprocessors were deployed alongside AMD processors in a top-ten supercomputing installation in Japan. ClearSpeed's
latest product, which does 66GFLOPS on 25W, scored the company a spot as an optional add-in in IBM System Cluster 1350, but that still doesn't get
ClearSpeed out of the profitable but low-volume HPC niche.
With today's announcement of a design win in a satellite from aerospace company BAE Systems, ClearSpeed has taken a small step into the
embedded space. I say "small," because ClearSpeed itself isn't making the embedded processor for the satellite. Rather, BAE Systems is actually
going to license a ClearSpeed design and then fabricate the chips themselves. Because the parts are going into space, they have to fit a peculiar set
of temperature and radiation constraints, so it will be up to BAE Systems to turn one of ClearSpeed's coprocessor designs into a spaceworthy chip.
