Windows Performance Blog

As I said in yesterdays introduction, my job as an engineer on the Windows Vista team is to improve performance. I wanted to look at a study that measure a key area that we focused on for Windows Vista consistent responsiveness during the times that matter most to users (when starting up their machine, after being idle, and when you are under the gun running tons of apps, etc.).

Company of Heroes videocard performance

The new real-time strategy game set in WWII, Company of Heroes, delivers full cinematic detail, and in doing so, it requires quite a lot of processing power. With all the visual enhancements enabled, Company of Heroes looks stunning, easily making one of the best looking RTS games of all time.

However, before purchasing this game or even considering a hardware upgrade, it will be important to know first if your computer will run it, and second how good it will actually look while at it. There is indeed a massive difference between low and high quality settings in CoH, suggesting older systems will still be able to run this title. But then again, having visual settings set at their maximum really does this game justice.

We have set up a system for testing Company of Heroes performance with 14 different graphics cards from both ATI and Nvidia, using three different in-game quality configurations, at three different resolutions, plus quality comparison screenshots to boot.

Bioshock videocard performance

Around this time last year we got our first little taste of what could be expected from Bioshock, when 2K released an impressive 14 minute gameplay trailer. Bioshock is considered by its developers to be the "spiritual successor" of the well acclaimed System Shock 2. There is much more to this game than meets the eye, which can be discovered when playing the 1.8GB demo which was released just weeks ago.

The full version of Bioshock has also been released for both the PC and the Xbox 360, allowing us to purchase a copy and do a full analysis of how the current crop of videocards do in this next-gen FPS. The game uses a modified version of the Unreal Engine 3, also used by Epic's Gears of War and upcoming Unreal Tournament 3 game. Given that Bioshock is a single-player only game, we were a little amazed by the hype that surrounded it, yet the fact it offers breathtaking visuals and while the gameplay itself is quite good, the jaw-dropping visuals keep you entertained right till the very end.

Microsoft: Another Vista Reliability & Performance Update

Vista’s performance is one of those topics that won’t be exhausted until Windows Seven hits RTM. It all comes down to trade-offs. Ever since the features of Vista were finalized, Microsoft tried to tip the scale the other way by focusing on performance, with the obvious limitation of not disabling any services. Updates regarding performance and stability are numerous, but most have not hit Windows Update as they are not quite ready (preview releases). The Windows Serviceability Team wants feedback on one such update, available for download at the Microsoft Download Center, before its expected release on Windows Update in January.

Considering the high expectations built around Call of Duty: World at War it will be interesting to see how the game stacks up against other competing shooters, but perhaps most importantly how it compares or improves upon last year's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which was an all-around success on the PC platform. 'World at War' was built using an enhanced version of the CoD 4 engine which should come as great news for PC gamers. Gaming Performance: Windows Vista SP1 vs. XP SP3

Even as Microsoft tries to shove Windows Vista down the collective and unwilling throat of computer users worldwide, the company is still perfecting the well-aged and well-loved Windows XP. The latter of the two operating systems just received its third (and evidently last) service pack.

<...> Of course, with the release of a new service pack comes a huge, pressing question: How does it compare to Windows Vista and its own recent update, Service Pack 1, in the game performance department? Vista, of course, has been plagued by criticism that games run on it don't perform as well as they do in Windows XP, even though most of the problems were due to early graphics drivers and have gradually been worked out.

Come with us as we install XP SP3 and take it for a test drive, and more importantly compare it to Vista SP1 with a batch of performance tests. Though DirectX 10 is Vista-only, many a gamer has sworn not to upgrade; will XP SP3 cement their decision, or has Vista and its drivers matured enough to change a few minds?

Crysis demo performance in-depth

Crysis is a highly anticipated first person shooter developed exclusively for the PC by Crytek, the makers of the award-winning Far Cry. The demo offers PC gamers a quick look at what will possibly be the most advanced FPS ever created, you just have to swallow the huge 1.8GB download first. Im sure many will agree that the demo is well worth the download though, offering the entire first level of the game which represents "roughly 45 minutes" of pure gameplay.

Today we are going to see how the various mid-range and high-end graphics cards handle this new and exciting first person shooter. There will also be some brief visual quality comparisons along with some CPU scaling and DX9 vs. DX10 performance charts. The single-player demo supports both DX10 and DX9 rendering in Vista while Windows XP users are limited to DX9. While the game has been said to include 64-bit support, the demo can only be run in 32-bit mode, so there are no 32-bit vs. 64-bit comparisons just yet.

How many FLOPS are in game consoles?

Jon Peddie: Floating Point Operations Per Second - FLOPS - one of the more obscure processor performance indicators, and one of the oldest ones. Over time, it has been modified with prefixes such as M (mega), G (giga), T (tera) and will soon get a P (peta). Tera describes a million millions - one trillion (1012) - which is a whole lot of anything whether it is cycles (Hertz), bytes, dollars, or FLOPS.

Recently I was asked how many TFLOPS are in all the game consoles shipped to date. There are two answers to that question. You can look at it from the perspective of all the game consoles built and you can look at this question with specific consoles in mind.

Lets look at the combined TFLOPS rating of all game consoles, which actually provides two answers as well.

BioShock Frame Rates: DirectX 9 Vs. DirectX 10

Want a serious performance boost in BioShock? Play it on DirectX 9. Sad, but true. As DirectX 9/10 hybrid games have trickled to market, we've been testing them to see whether the newer, Vista-only API library is worth its salt. We've done it with Company of Heroes, Lost Planet, and more. In every case, DirectX 9 performance was far better than that of DirectX 10.

Add another game to the pile. Using FRAPS to measure frame rates, we've discovered that BioShock plays much more smoothly on DirectX 9. We ran the informal test on a Vista machine with an AMD ATI Radeon HD 2900 XT graphics card, an Intel QX6700 CPU overclocked to 3.19 GHz, and 4GB of memory.

Playing through five very similar minutes of the game with FRAPS and timing the frames per second, we shot up a batch of splicers in DX10 and then in DX9, with all other settings being equal (high quality defaults at 1680x1050). In DirectX 10, FRAPS showed an average of 61.658 fps; in DirectX 9, the average was 80.300 fps.

The game looks pretty much the same in either mode. You certainly don't notice a difference in graphical splendor when you're running breakneck through the Rapture, dodging grenades thrown by splicers while looking for the telekinesis upgrade.

While we continue to wait for a game built upon DirectX 10 from the ground up to wow us with its performance, evidence mounts that DirectX 10 just isn't all it's cracked up to be compared with its predecessor.
