13.2.2009Microsoft unveils Freeze Dry
for Windows Vista
Windows Vista will
include a new technology known
as Freeze Dry designed to
maintain application states
and unsaved documents even
when patches are automatically
applied and PCs are
rebooted.
Speaking at the Australian
Tech Ed conference on the Gold
Coast in Queensland this week,
senior product manager Amy
Stephan offered a preview of
the Freeze Dry
technology.
Many IT
managers plan to automatically
install patches and updates on
machines during periods when
they are inactive, such as
overnight or on weekends.
However, as some patches
require machines to reboot,
users who leave documents open
and unsaved run the risk of
losing that data if the
machine is automatically
updated. ..

04.10.2008Microsoft wants to freeze the Vista incapable lawsuit
EVER SLIPPERY, Microsoft asked that the "Vista Capable" lawsuit against it be stayed while it appeals the judge's approval of class action
standing for the case.
The lawsuit, filed almost a year ago, claims that Microsoft misled punters in late 2006 by letting PC makers stick
"Vista Capable" labels on lower power machines sold with Windows XP that were later found capable of running only the Home Basic version of Windows
Vista rather than the full version that includes most of Vista's new features including the Aero eye-candy graphical interface.
It
claims that PC buyers paid more for those machines than they would have parted with had they known that they wouldn't be able to support Windows
Vista when that was released a few months later in early 2007.

11.03.2008Mozilla freezes Firefox 3.0 Beta 4
For the second time in the last four weeks, Mozilla Corp. has announced a "code freeze" for a beta version of Firefox 3.0 -- this time, Beta 4 -- as
it begins to prep another public release of the open-source browser.
The freeze was announced late Tuesday. Earlier in the day,
the company's chief engineer hinted that the number of outstanding bugs at that point -- 66 that potentially could block the release of Firefox 3.0
-- meant a fifth beta will likely be needed.
"We reviewed the remaining number of P1
and P2 blockers
on our lists, and decided that we would go ahead with tonight's Firefox 3 Beta 4 code freeze, and then bake nightly builds for a few days before
handing off the code to the Build and Quality Assurance teams," said Mike Beltzner,
Mozilla's interface designer, in a message posted to the company's developer center.

Apple Releases Fix for iMac Freeze
in early October that some iMac users were experiencing freezing problems with their machines. The root cause of the freezes was traced back to the
drivers used for the ATI Radeon HD graphics cards included with the iMacs.
"A small number of iMac users have made us aware that
a recent software update issued by Apple can sometimes cause their iMacs to freeze, requiring them to restart their iMac," said an Apple
spokesman in October.
Apple didnt reach their October estimate for releasing the update, but its doubtful that many will complain that the
update is available a few days into the month of November. The update is listed as "recommended" and is for 20" and 24" iMacs with
2GHz, 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz processors.
Apple has two separate updates available for download:

Apple Releases Fix for iMac Freeze Issue, fix not enough

24" iMacs with 2GHz, 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz processors. Apple has two separate updates available for download: iMac Software Update 1.2 for Tiger and
iMac Software Update 1.3 for Leopard. Although the company originally stayed silent on the issue, it is great to see that once they acknowledged it
they worked quickly to release a fix. Some users are reporting, however, that the issue remains unfixed.

iPhone 3GS gets jailbroken and unlocked
Purplera1n, unrelated to the Dev Team, has come out with a solution to jailbreak the iPhone 3GS for both Windows and Intel Mac computers. The
jailbreak allows users to download Cydia on their iPhone to install unofficial applications on their device. The jailbreaking solution provided by
purplera1n still does not allow Winterboard to be used as of yet. The method installs an application called Freeze onto the device; this installs and
unpacks Cydia. Users who install Cydia onto their device can then proceed to install UltraSn0w which was recently released to unlock the iPhone 3G,
now unlocks the iPhone 3GS.

The Ubuntu development community has announced that
the fifth Ubuntu 8.04 prerelease is now available for testing. Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 5 adds additional polish and reliability as well as a few intriguing
new features. The official release of Ubuntu 8.04, codenamed Hardy Heron, is scheduled

Black screen of darkness to haunt Vista pirates
Microsoft Windows' infamous "Blue Screen of Death" has become synonymous with an operating system crash or freeze, but that's nothing compared
with what users of pirated copies of Vista worldwide can expect from now - a black screen of darkness.
In an e-mail to a large
Windows Vista OEM distributor titled "Pirated Vista - A darkness descends!", a local Microsoft representative made it quite clear what Vista pirates
can expect to happen to their unlicenced installations.
A copy of this e-mail was obtained by Computerworld:

function in Vista which effectively disables non genuine copies of Windows. Therefore, anyone who has a pirated copy of Vista will

Vista plaintiffs push for case to proceed
Lawyers for the plaintiffs are asking a federal judge to let a lawsuit over Microsoft's "Windows Vista Capable" program advance toward trial while
the company appeals a pivotal ruling in the case, according to court papers filed Monday afternoon.
Their filing responds to Microsoft's request for U.S. District Judge Marsha
Pechman to freeze the case and suspend document production while the company asks the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to review her ruling
certifying the suit as a class action. The plaintiffs, who also plan to oppose that appeal, contend that Microsoft wants to keep the case from
proceeding to avoid the release of more internal e-mails showing the behind-the-scenes discussions about the Windows Vista program.

Seagate firmware update bricks 500GB HDDs
Just days since Seagate released a firmware update for a range of hard drives, which were hit by firmware bugs, Tom's Hardware reports that things
don't look much brighter for hard drive giant Seagate. This time the problem is with the SD1A firmware update, for the 500GB hard drives in the
7200.11 series, which many unhappy customers have said completely bricks the hard drive. The problem lies in the firmware update, which causes the
drive to freeze up. As far as un-bricking the devices goes, there has been little success. Some have claimed that downgrading the firmware has fixed
the problems, for the moment.

Microsoft, Bungie face Halo 3 class action
A California resident has brought a class action suit against Microsoft and Bungie alleging that Halo 3 is not fit for its purpose of being played on

The suit claims "Halo 3 does not function with the Xbox 360, and to the contrary, attempted use of Halo 3
consistently causes the Xbox 360 to 'crash,' 'freeze,' or 'lock up' while the game is being played."
Furthermore, it
alleges that despite consumer complaints, Microsoft and Bungie have failed to recall or rectify the game.

The Futurist: Why Apples Good Products Are Bad For Innovation
Fewrather, no othercompanies stir up the same fools game of me-too as Apple. I feel sort of ridiculous saying it, and perhaps sound like a bit of a
fanboy, but Apple makes products that work in ways most CE products dont. When playing with an iPod or iPhone, its almost easy to take for granted the
fact that most things we buy just arent user-friendly.
A top exec at Research In Motion (that would be the guys who make
BlackBerrys) told me a few months back that about 30 percent of Windows Mobile phones were returned“presumably because their buyers are so frustrated
with their atrocious battery life/molassis-slow processors/impossible-to-navigate GUI/propensity to freeze. Im not sure how many iPhone buyers are
returning their gadgets in frustration, but Id guess its a statistically insignificant number.
In general, as the cliche goes,
Apple products are known for being simple, pretty, easy-to-use, and fun. And this is exactly why they are bad for progress in the tech world.

Apple admits hard-disks are falling asleep mid-operation
Recently, reports have been surfacing of Macbook Pro laptops repetitively temporarily freezing for short amounts of time. Today, Apple announced that
this problem is widespread and they have promised to provide a bux fix. The issue only seems to affect MacBook Pros with 7200rpm 500GB hard drives
and is thought to be due to code that's causing the drive to sleep during use. The hard disks in question fall asleep during operation, and freeze
the computer temporarily until it spins up again - after an indeterminate amount of time - usually a maximum of 10 seconds. They also beep loudly and
click during the process.
