04.12.2006What's Cheaper: Free Software, Or Pirated Windows?
Ask anyone who regularly
downloads movies, software and
music without paying for any
of it. Ask them what they find
to be cheaper, Microsoft
Windows or Linux. If they
really think about it, theyll
tell you that Windows is
cheaper, because both of them
are free, and free Windows is
coming in at a huge
discount.
The fact of the matter is
that, in the home, software
piracy is rampant. Its why
software that sells to
businesses continues to grow
(Office, Adobe Creative Suite)
while games sales keep
dropping and Microsoft Works
is given away for free. So
many people use file sharing
networks, get copies from a
friend, or even buy $400
computers pre-loaded with
thousands of dollars of
software. They view it as a
way of life.
Dave
Gutteridge has a great article
titled Windows is
Free explaining how
Linux has a practically
impossible time competing with
Windows because anyone whod
switch on price can just
pirate Windows. For many home
users, Windows is as free as
Linux, and from a cost/benefit
position, Windows is
cheaper.

Will free office suites supplant Microsoft as the industry leader?
Quite a bit of talk has arisen today over two of Microsoft's competitors (Google and IBM) offering free office suites in an attempt to supplant
Microsoft as the office king. And now that this is happened, some are wondering if Microsoft will finally face reality and offer its own Office
product for free so it can compete.
The possibility of having Word, Excel, Powerpoint and the rest for free sure sounds awfully
nice, but if you think Microsoft would give it up for free, you're dreaming.
As NPD announced just last week, Office 2007 is
performing extremely well. According to the research firm, Office 2007 on Windows is selling at roughly double the rate of Office 2003. Will two free
solutions alter the unprecedented sales figures Microsoft is currently enjoying? Not a chance.
As someone who has used both
Google's Office Suite and another free product, OpenOffice, I can say that neither of those programs can possibly stack up to Windows Office. Believe
me, I wish I could say that both do, but the sad truth is they don't.

The Danger of Free
Everyone loves to get stuff for free. We line up to get a free drink, we sign up for free checking accounts, and we're happy to get a free gift
with the purchase of our next car. We love free stuff, even though we all know and understand that free is an illusion. After that free drink, we pay
for the next three. The bank is making money by investing what we put in that checking account. The car dealer can afford to give away a small gift
because the profit on the car is large. But none of this seems to bother us - free things still have a certain allure. But is the concept of free
taking us down a dangerous road?
Marketers long ago figured out the attractiveness of free. For decades companies have been playing tricks
using free to lure naive customers. But recently, our obsession with free has given rise to a new phenomenon - where the customer is never asked to
pay. How? Because the business makes their money on advertising. Marketers are happy to pay for access to customers, who in turn love not having to
pay. So the web plays the glorious role of middle man. Are we heading into dangerous territory? The paths that we are taking lead to confused
customers at best; and monopolistic practices at worst. A culture where consumers think that increasingly more and more services should be free is not
healthy.
