Microsoft in pole position to buy AOL
Search giant Yahoo's decision not to buy AOL has left Microsoft as the most likely candidate to buy the troubled outfit.
Vole wants AOL to sink Google and is widely seen as the main candidate to buy the outfit. Google wants AOL to give it a portal to increase its advertising potential. At the moment, it makes more than 10 per cent of its revenues out of AOL.

19.1.2009Oops! Microsoft forgets to trademark 'Windows Azure'
Although Microsoft registered the Web site for its new Windows Azure more than 14 years ago, it has not trademarked the name of its new cloud-based
operating system, Windows Azure, Internet searches revealed Monday.
According to searches conducted by Computerworld, Microsoft has not
applied for a trademark for either "Windows Azure" or "Azure Services Platform" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Microsoft used both
names to describe its software-plus-services technology.
Microsoft's own trademark list also omits Azure, though that list has not been
updated since earlier this month.

03.11.2006What's Cheaper: Free Software, Or Pirated Windows?
Ask anyone who regularly
downloads movies, software and
music without paying for any
of it. Ask them what they find
to be cheaper, Microsoft
Windows or Linux. If they
really think about it, theyll
tell you that Windows is
cheaper, because both of them
are free, and free Windows is
coming in at a huge
discount.
The fact of the matter is
that, in the home, software
piracy is rampant. Its why
software that sells to
businesses continues to grow
(Office, Adobe Creative Suite)
while games sales keep
dropping and Microsoft Works
is given away for free. So
many people use file sharing
networks, get copies from a
friend, or even buy $400
computers pre-loaded with
thousands of dollars of
software. They view it as a
way of life.
Dave
Gutteridge has a great article
titled Windows is
Free explaining how
Linux has a practically
impossible time competing with
Windows because anyone whod
switch on price can just
pirate Windows. For many home
users, Windows is as free as
Linux, and from a cost/benefit
position, Windows is
cheaper.

17.04.2008Australian apathy results in OOXML abstain vote
Standards Australia has returned an 'abstain' vote on the proposal to adopt the Office Open XML format standard as an International Standard.
The standards body, which represents Australia at the International Standards Organisation (ISO), said the decision was due to
stakeholder apathy and a clear lack of consensus throughout the development process.
"The decision to abstain is the most
responsible position we can take at the moment and reflects the strongly held and diverse views of the Australian stakeholders that have taken part in
the process," Alistair Tegart, Program Manager from Standards Australia, said.
"If a clearer position becomes evident in
Australia over the next six months, Standards Australia would be able to take that position to the JTC1 committee and vote accordingly."..
