Microsoft gets an earful on what users want in future Windows releases

In December 2006, Microsoft requested feedback from a select group of invitees regarding what they would like to see fixed, changed and/or added to future Windows builds. The Windows team got an earful: Nearly 800 new feature requests, another 560-plus change requests and almost 400 defects.

That list has been winnowed down to about 70 of the most popular requests and posted the week of July 9 to Microsofts Connect beta site.

This isnt the official Windows Seven or Windows Eight feature list. But the list does indicate some of the features that testers are the most interested in seeing make it into the next Windows release or two.

Internet Explorer is now an optional feature in Windows 7

Along with various other changes that are to be reflected in Windows 7 RC, here is a big change that is not in the list. From Windows 7 build 7048, Internet Explorer(IE) is an optional Windows feature and can be installed/uninstalled from Windows 7. This will be a welcoming (and surprising) news, especially to European Union and Opera who have accused Microsoft for not giving consumers a genuine choice of Web browsers. If IE is upgraded to version 8 in Vista (from version 7), users do get an option to uninstall IE 8, but not IE 7. IE 7 remains as integral component of Windows Vista which cannot be removed.

Windows 7 Feature Request List Leaks Out

Although the Vista transition is far from complete, that doesn't mean Microsoft isn't already hard at work on Windows 7, the next version of the venerable operating system - and this list of user-requested features unearthed by the folks at Neowin might hold some clues as to the future.

The "wish list" was sent out by Microsoft before Windows 7 development even began, so most of these features probably aren't even on the radar, but what's most interesting is that seemingly small fixes like "Window Update progress indicator" vastly outnumber big-ticket items like "integrated audio / video codec manager" and "Windows 'Game' Mode."

Microsoft: Vista SP1 will break these programs

Microsoft has published a list of programs that will not work or that will suffer from reduced functionality after the installation of Vista Service Pack 1.

The list of programs consists mostly of security applications, such as Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. However, programs such as The New York Times Reader application also feature on the list. Users are advised to install updates from the application vendor to fix the problem.

"Windows Vista Service Pack 1 contains many security, reliability, and feature updates for Windows Vista," the company said. "A program may experience a loss of functionality after you install Windows Vista SP1. However, most programs will continue to work as expected after you install Windows Vista SP1."

Twitter unveils 'Lists' feature, API details to follow soon

The social networking site 'Twitter' has been firing out announcements regarding functionality lately; they've got an official 'Retweeting' feature in the oven, to add to an upcoming 'geolocation' feature ready for release soon, and just earlier today the company added a new development to the list (excuse the pun). The feature is one that's been asked for by the community for a while now, and has even had unofficial methods implemented into third party Twitter clients; we're, of course, talking about 'Lists', currently under development for the site, which will help boost the user experience quite significantly.

Twitter begins rolling out Lists feature for select people

Just recently, social media service Twitter announced a new feature named 'Lists', aimed at organizing those you follow, as well as helping with mass followings. Just earlier, the feature went live for a number of people, though it came with a 'beta' tag and a warning not to mention it. The feature is just as you'd expect; you can create your own lists, give them custom names, and then proceed to add those who should be on it. From your own account, you can see which lists you've created and which ones you've been place on by other people. To top it off, Twitter itself has put together a list of its employees, totaling 108 different accounts.

Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta Begins Today

Microsoft is expected to officially open the beta program for Windows Live Messenger 9.0 this afternoon (or early evening). Windows Live Messenger 9.0 is the next generation of Windows Live Messenger; this release is a "major" release and as such there will be no further interim builds for Windows Live Messenger. The beta program for Windows Live Messenger is by invitation only and those invitations were sent out last week on Tuesday - Wednesday (the 21st, and 22nd respectively). Currently the beta program has been limited to 5,000 testers and will later be expanded to a larger group.

As reported by several sites, the program was not put on hold at all due to the feature list being leaked over the holiday weekend, additionally, sites also reported that some testers had already gotten the build and that was just a rumor. Coincidentally, almost all of the sites that had posted the feature list for Windows Live Messenger had politely removed the list of features. Again, the beta program is expected to officially start this afternoon or early evening. We will be updating this post when the build is released on Microsoft’s Connect web site. We will share more information as it comes in and we will share as much information as we are allowed to by our non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

Windows 7: A few more changes from Beta to RC

Steven Sinfosky: Hey folks, just wanted to provide another update (building on the recent post on some changes since Beta) on some of the changes you will see in the Release Candidate.  Again, there are many and this is not an exhaustive list.  Of course we continue to gather telemetry from the large number of people running the Beta full time.  Just a reminder, the Beta is the only official build from Microsoft.  Chaitanya compiled this list from a broad set of feature teams focused on visible changes based on feedback that go beyond bug fixes, though we included some of the more widely reported bugs on this list as well.

Windows Server 2008 DNS Block Feature

Windows Server 2008 introduces a DNS block feature that may affect the ISA Server automatic discovery when implementing the WPAD mechanism using a Windows Server 2008 DNS Server.

The block feature provides a global query block list to reduce vulnerability associated with dynamic DNS updates. Dynamic update makes it possible for DNS client computers to register and dynamically update their resource records with a DNS server whenever a client changes its network address or host name. This reduces the need for manual administration of zone records, especially for clients that frequently move or change locations and use DHCP to obtain an IP address. This convenience comes at a cost, however, because an authorized client can register any unused host name, even a host name that might have special significance for certain applications. This can allow a malicious user to "hijack" a special name and divert certain types of network traffic to that user's computer. WPAD is a commonly deployed protocol vulnerable to this type of hijacking, and by default WPAD look up is disabled by the blocking mechanism.

Google lets users see 100 fastest-gaining queries

Customers will be able to see news stories, Web log postings and search results for each query on the lists. Before today, Google had released a manually compiled weekly list of the hottest search terms called the Google Zeitgeist...

How to Delete a Windows Service in Vista or XP

If you are a fan of tweaking your system and disabling services, you might find that over time your Windows Services list becomes huge and unwieldy with a large number of services in the list that will never be enabled.

Instead of just disabling a service, you can alternatively completely delete the service. This technique can be especially helpful if you've installed some piece of software that doesn't uninstall correctly, and leaves an item in the service list.

Will Windows 7 track your every move?

One good place to look for what might be coming in Windows 7 is an early planned feature list of Vista (then called Longhorn) back in 2003. If one intriguing feature, called Location Awareness, makes its way into Windows 7, it could track your every move...and that could be a good thing.

Microsoft described Location Awareness, along with a host of other planned features, in a document called the Windows "Longhorn" Pre-Release Privacy Statement that detailed to beta testers Longhorn's expected data collection and use. (Thanks to istartedsomething for uncovering this document and its relation to another potential Windows 7 feature, HomeGroup.) Many of these features never made it into Vista --- remember WinFS anyone?

WLM Feature: Update!

Does Live Messenger?s new feature ?Music Mix? work for you?

It seems that yet another flashy feature for Windows Live Messenger might end up being just like the last.

It seems not many people have had much luck with getting ?Shared Folders? to work, and ?Music Mix? appears to be no different. After trying different methods to make the feature work, I spoke with a member of the Windows Live Messenger Beta team concerning problems with the feature.

Now we have reason to believe that problems with the ?Music Mix? might be due to Locale Settings, therefore you would have to change your locale to match a country that supports the feature. Currently ?Music Mix? is only available in the US, France, Germany, Japan, and the UK.

MSN Gets Another Feature!

Just when you thought there wouldn't be anything else interesting for messenger to surface, think again! The good people from the Live Messenger Beta Team have once again launched yet another feature.

"Mimic" is the new feature that was just launched today for MSN Messenger.

Accessible from the activities menu just like the last feature "Music Mix," "Mimic" is an add-on that is for people that enjoy playing pranks on their friends. This new feature is also good for people that just want to pretend they are someone they're really not. Along with this feature there are 8 different ?personas? to choose from.

At this point it hasn't been clarified as to when "Mimic" will be available for Windows Live Messenger. After the Windows Live Messenger team released the "Music Mix" feature to work with MSN, we can only hope that they add "Mimic" soon to Live Messenger!
