51GB HD DVD Standard Not Final Media

Despite of reports regarding finalization of triple-layer HD DVD media with DVD Forum, there are also claims that contradict this information and state that the approved standard is preliminary. Therefore, commercial introduction of 51GB HD DVD media slips into late 2008 if not 2009.

The single-sided triple-layer 51GB HD DVD disc that was reportedly approved by the DVD Forum is just a preliminary version (version 1.9) rather than a final one, according to industry sources in Taiwan, reports DigiTimes web-site. Earlier this month it was revealed that Toshiba-developed 51GB HD DVD had been ratified by DVD Forum organization, however, this may not be true.

It is also reported that even if the final version of the triple-layer HD DVD standard comes out soon, it would take one to three quarters before the start of production of corresponding consumer electronics hardware, implying that currently available HD DVD players and drives may not be able to playback or read the new discs with 51GB capacity...

Enlarged Triple Layer HD DVD Finally Gets Approved

DVD Forum, the international organization that oversees standardization of DVD and HD DVD optical disc formats, has finally approved version 2.0 of triple-layer HD DVD discs. The availability of physical specification of an HD DVD read-only media that can hold up to 51GB of data will allow the manufacturers to start producing the appropriate disks, whereas content producers may now start to think about how to use additional capacity.

The approval of DVD specifications for high density read-only disc part 1 physical specifications, version 2.0, took place during the 40th steering committee meeting on November 15, 2007. Back in September, the DVD Forum also approved version 1.9 specification of 51GB HD DVD media as well as revision 1.0 of triple-layer twin format discs, which can hold up to 30GB of data on its HD DVD side and up to 4.7GB of data on its DVD side.

DVD Forum approves Triple Layer HD DVD Version 2.0

The DVD Forum, the international organization that oversees standardization of DVD and HD DVD optical disc formats, has finally approved version 2.0 of triple-layer HD DVD discs, meaning manufacturers can now begin production of HD DVD read-only discs that can hold up to 51GB (3 x 17) of data. As well, content producers may now start to think about how to use additional capacity. Back in September, the DVD Forum approved version 1.9 specification of 51GB HD DVD media as well as revision 1.0 of triple-layer twin format discs, which can hold up to 30GB of data on its HD DVD side and up to 4.7GB of data on its DVD side. Toshiba confirmed the triple-layer disc structure and its successful operation earlier this year.

More importantly however, neither Toshiba nor the DVD Forum have confirmed that triple-layer HD DVDs will play on existing HD DVD hardware. Fortunately users on dedicated high-definition related forums report that improved 17GB layers actually gained in readability (compared to 15GB layers) and that even first-generation HD DVD players can read three layers. Therefore, it is highly likely that movies distributed on triple-layer HD DVD 51GB discs will be playable even on the very first HD DVD players. It remains to be seen whether triple-layer HD DVDs are more cost-efficient compared to dual-layer Blu-ray discs both in terms of media costs as well as replications costs.

The BBC series Planet Earth on HD DVD was the best seller among all high definition titles in its second week at retail. The Blu-ray version came in second place.

In its second week, for the seven-day period ended May 6, the 4-disc set became the first HD DVD box set to earn the top spot on Nielsen's weekly high-def charts.

During the same period, the Blu-ray version of Planet Earth ranked #2, with sales of about 5% less than the HD DVD set. Blu-ray, though, continues to hold the lead in market share, taking about 60% of all hi-def sales in the first week in May...

"300" Outlines HD DVD, Blu-ray Disc Differences

This weeks home video movie releases will bring with it a disc that will clearly outline the differences in feature sets of HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc. 300, released on Tuesday, hits the market on high-definition with unequal releases.

The rights to 300 belong to Warner Home Video a studio that backs both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc but the studio has graced the HD DVD version with several exclusive features that currently can be found nowhere else.

Found only on the HD DVD version is the "Bluescreen Picture-in-Picture Version" of the film. As 300 was shot almost completely in a bluescreen-laden warehouse in Canada, the raw footage differs greatly from the movies final look. Viewers are able to directly compare the before and after shots through a picture-in-picture window that can be dynamically enabled or disabled. Running alongside the pre-processed footage is an exclusive commentary track by director Zack Snyder recorded specifically for the special feature...

HD DVD Group Reports Over 100,000 Players Sold in the U.S.

The North American HD DVD Promotional Group has announced that more than 100,000 dedicated HD DVD players have sold in the U.S. in the format's first year on the market. This figure does not include sales of HD DVD PC drives or the Xbox 360 HD DVD player. Although raw sales of movies currently favour Blu-ray, the HD DVD Promotion Group points out that it leads in the area of standalone players. The HD DVD Promotional Group also noted that its format currently has the edge on mandatory special features, such as a network connection, picture-in-picture, persistent storage, and decode support for Dolby True HD. Consumers can also enjoy combo discs that include a DVD version as well as an HD version on a single disc for playback on both machines.

How to identify a buggy device driver on Windows Vista

If your computer is acting unpredictably, locking up, and encountering blue screens of death, then youre most likely the victim of a faulty driver. The Driver Verifier Manager (DFV) is a great tool for troubleshooting driver problems by identifying the troubling driver. Although DFV does not actually fix the driver, it still is a really useful tool because it helps you identify the troubling driver so you can choose to delete or update the driver.

Before you attempt to use this tool, please be sure that your are really having driver problems. The tool will prevent your computer from starting by identifying the troubling driver. I say this only because it may be a lengthy process for you but if you are having troubles, it will definitely be worth it.

1st Official HD-DVD drive for PCs

Buffalo will be launching the HDV-ROM2.4FB at the end of this month. Officially this HD-DVD drive (OEMed by Toshiba) will be the world's first HD-DVD drive for PCs. Some high-end PCs already shipped with HD-DVD drives, but until now it was impossible to buy any ATAPI HD-DVD drives sold independently for PCs. Next to HD-DVD discs, the device will of course also read all previous formats: DVDR/RW, DVDR/R DL, DVD-ROM and CD-R/RW/ROM.

The device will retail for about 38850JPY, thats ~337usd/254eur. Seems a bit expensive considering the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Addon is already available right now for just 199usd and can be used in Windows Vista (natively) and Windows XP (with some special drivers) too. The only thing missing in the Xbox360 HD-DVD package is PC software to playback HD-DVD movies. The Buffalo drive comes with PowerDVD HD-DVD Edition.
