Don't get me wrong, they make great hardware, but Creative is not known for their efficiency in writing drivers for their hardware. 08.12.2005Black Hat: Web browser attack skirts corporate firewall
A 10-year-old security problem
has come back to haunt
corporate IT, a security
researcher told an audience at
the Black Hat conference in
Las Vegas Wednesday.
Dan Kaminsky,
director of penetration
testing for IO Active Inc.,
showed how problems in the way
browser software works with
the Internet's domain name
system could be exploited to
give attackers access to any
resources behind the corporate
firewall.
He described a multi-step
attack that could be used to
scan corporate networks for
data or vulnerabilities. But
at the heart of the attack is
a 1996 paper by Princeton
researchers showing how a Java
applet could be used to access
systems on a victim's
network. "It's one of the
few things that's actually
come back from the dead,"
Kaminsky said.
The fundamental
problem, according to
Kaminsky, is in the way that
Web browser software decides
how to trust other computers.
This decision is based on the
Internet domain name of the
computer, and that DNS (Domain
Name System) information can
be misused, Kaminsky said.
"It's a binding problem,"
he said during an interview
after his talk. "They assume
a value is not changing, but
the attacker can change it
whenever he chooses."..

The Internet domain game has been going strong for over 20 years. Have you ever thought back and wondered what some of the first domain registrations

If only you were able to predict at that time how vast the internet would expand you could have made loads of money. Simple three letter domain
names now sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars. It's no surprise that the first 100 list is compromised of many large corporations as it
surely cost more than $1.99 to register a domain name in the 1980's.

le fix protects against
attacks that take advantage of
a new, unpatched flaw that
could let attackers secretly
run malicious software on
users' PCs. The flaw was
disclosed late Thursday by
security researcher Tom
Ferris, sending Mozilla staff
into damage-control
mode.
The problem
has to do with the way the
Firefox and Mozilla browsers
handle International Domain
Names, or IDNs, said Mike
Schroepfer, director of
engineering at Mozilla. IDNs
are domain names that use
local language characters. The
fix disables support for such
Web addresses, he
said.
"This is a
temporary work-around just to
deal with the immediate
issue," Schroepfer said.
"We're working on a future
release in which we will
actually fix the problem and
re-enable the IDN feature."
Switching off IDN support
impacts a subset of Firefox
and Mozilla users who actually
use such special domain names,
he said. ..

04.12.2007Domain Name Sells For $2.6m
A US man has sold the domain name pizza.com for $2.6m (£1.3m) - after maintaining the site for just $20 a year since 1994.
Chris Clark, 43, accepted the offer from an anonymous bidder after a week-long online auction. Mr Clark registered the domain name in 1994, when the
world wide web was just starting. He had hoped that pizza.com would help to get a contract with a pizza firm for his consulting company.
He
sold his business in 2000, but kept paying the $20 annual fees for maintaining the domain, which he also used to sell advertisements.
Mr Clark has admitted regretting that he did not purchase more domain names in the 1990s, when many (now) popular domain names were still available.

05.04.2008Google Fights Domain Name Tasting
Google Inc. announced yesterday that it would begin to take increasing measures against domain name tasting, a practice which exploits a grace period
originally designed to rectify legitimate mistakes, such as registrants mistyping the domain name they are about to buy. With automation and a
burgeoning online advertising market, entrepreneurs have generated big bucks by exploiting this policy to test hoards of names, keeping just the ones
that turn out to generate the most revenue; unfortunately for legitimate users, these entrepreneurs can tie up millions of domain names at any given
moment.

27.02.2008New Domain-Based Namespaces On The Way
Things have been a little
quiet around here since we
released Windows Server 2008
Beta 3 (over 250,000 downloads
so far and counting!), so I
wanted to take this chance to
let you know about something
that you'll soon be able to
take advantage of in Windows
Server 2008. The DFS
Namespaces team has let me
know that they are adding
support for domain-based
namespaces that exceed the
previous size recommendation
of 5,000 folders with targets
in a namespace. Starting in
Windows Server 2008, you will
be able to use the DFS
Management snap-in to create a
new domain-based namespace in
one of the following
modes:
- Windows 2000
Server mode provides the same
functionality and scalability
currently available in
namespaces hosted on servers
running Windows 2000 Server or
Windows Server 2003.
- Windows Server 2008 mode
provides increased scalability
and support for access-based
enumeration, which will be
configurable using Dfsutil.
There are now no hard limits
to the size of the namespace “
however, we are currently
running performance tests to
determine guidelines for
sizing these new domain-based
namespaces for practical
performance
considerations.
To create
a domain-based namespace in
Windows Server 2008 mode, your
servers and domain will need
to meet the following
requirements:
- The
domain functional level must
be Windows Server 2008
- All servers hosting the
namespace must run Windows
Server 2008
Stand-alone
namespaces will also benefit
from the underlying DFS
Namespaces changes made in
Windows Server 2008, allowing
stand-alone namespaces hosted
on servers running Windows
Server 2008 to support
access-based enumeration.
Pretty cool,
no? Stay tuned for more
feature update news as we get
ready for our next big
milestone release :-)
