Internet Explorer 7 a Disappointment as Big as Windows Vista?
Is Internet Explorer 7 matching Windows Vista in the level of disappointment delivered to end users? Well, such an answer lies ultimately within you. But at the same time, IE7 has not been submitted to the same barrage of fire that Vista had to face throughout 2007.

On Tuesday

Microsoft proudly unveiled the
latest incarnation of its new

5219 is to date the most
complete and stunning look at
this new next-generation OS
we've seen yet.
It
seems that with every major
release so far of Vista we've
had a bit of controversy. This
time it was leaked screenshots

date of 5219. Those shots show
quite a number of things that
you won't see with this build

not though, there are many
many changes in this PDC build

AT&T's MMS service live for some iPhone customers
When Apple announced the third version of their iPhone OS earlier this year, there was much excitement; unfortunately though, some of this excitement
turned into disappointment. Yes, some handy new features were added, but also some that people believe should have been there from the
beginning… MMS being one of those. To add to the frustration from American users, Apple stated that MMS for the U.S. would be delayed due to
issues on AT&T's end. Fortunately, that period of MMS drought is quickly coming to an end, and has already done so, according to a post at TUAW.

Win7 Improves SSD Performance
After some advancements in SSD performance announced last week, there are more!
A lot of re-engineering has gone on in Redmond to make
Windows 7 truly take full advantage of what SSDs have to offer, and also to expand their lifespan by treating them in a special way when they are
detected.
Read/Write cycles with SSDs running on 7 will be much faster due to the more efficient partitioning technique it will use. It
turns off defragmentation (a huge factor in decreasing the lifespan of SSDs) while the drive is in use. Defragmenting is unnecessary because of the
already fast read cycles they provide.
It also uses specially-tuned ATA commands to increase the lacking write speeds.

Apple shares take a pounding as Air fails to impress
Apple Inc. shares continued to take a pounding for a second straight day Wednesday, with investors and some industry analysts expressing
disappointment with Apple's latest announcements at the annual Macworld Expo.
Apple's stock cut its losses, but was still down by
$7.47, or 4.4%, to trade at $161.66 in afternoon action, adding to the previous session's losses in which the stock gave up more than

Part of the reason for the decline was attributed to concerns about Intel Corp.'s disappointing outlook, as Apple exclusively uses
Intel processors in its line of Macintosh PCs.

Microsoft's Small Business VoIP Fails To Impress

However,

Microsoft's Worldwide Partner

unimpressed."
"From a telephony point
of view, it's a
disappointment. It doesn't
support T1 trunking, which is
important, even for small
businesses," said the
Microsoft partner, who
requested anonymity. "All it
does support is regular POTS

which isn't a long term
solution for most businesses
because there's no growth
path."..

Vista "Express Upgrade" anything but express
When news hit of Windows
Vista's final major delay,
OEMs were depressed. Several
contacts in the industry told
me that not having Vista on
PCs in time for Christmas was
a major disappointment. Big
surprise. For all of the
negative press Vista was sure
to garner, it still would
drive PC sales. Many OEMs
adopted Microsoft's "Express
Upgrade" plan, offering
holiday shoppers the option of
getting an upgrade to Vista
for little or no additional
cost. If you purchased a new
PC with Windows XP after
October 26, chances are
you're entitled to a free or
discounted upgrade, depending
on the deal the OEM
offered.
But as the
January 30 launch date came
and went, customers waiting
for their Express Upgrade have
found that there's nothing
"express" about it. Some two
weeks after launch, few-if
any-customers have received
their upgrades from major
OEMs, despite the fact that
you can walk into any retail
computer store and pick one up
right off the shelves. What
gives? Dell cited initial
customer demand and server
problems for part of their own
delays, but now that
everything is working, the
company is still saying that
Express Upgrades will not ship
before the end of the month.
Furthermore, the company
states that orders are filled
on a first-come/first-served
basis, so some users have
longer waits in store. Indeed,
the company is warning users
that shipping itself may take
6-8 weeks.

Microsoft OneCare fails virus test
Microsoft's Windows Live
OneCare security suite has
failed a test to detect or
stop 37 malicious programs on
Windows Vista. Independent
security certification body
Virus Bulletin tested 15
security suites on Windows
Vista against a set of malware
from the WildList database.
"The tests conducted in our
secure labs were against the
most significant viruses and
worms affecting real-world
users," said John Hawes,
technical consultant at Virus
Bulletin.
"In
these days of hourly updates,
it is always a surprise and a
disappointment to see major
products missing them.
Computer users deserve to see
a better performance than this
from security vendors."
OneCare detected about 99.91
per cent of the threats,
picking up on all macro
viruses. But it failed to stop
some viruses, file infectors
and polymorphic malware which
constantly changes in an
effort to avoid detection by
security software.
Microsoft's offering was one
of four suites which failed to
detect all malware. The others
were G-Data AntiVirusKit 2007
v.17.0.6353, McAfee VirusScan
Enterprise 8.1i and Norman
Virus Control 5.90.

Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light
Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably
more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista
experience a tiny bit.
Real Desktop comes it two
forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and
with Light, not so much.
The ślightť version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them
anywhere on the śdesk,ť flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the
camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to
mess them up.
