DHCP Network Hint in Windows 7

With the increase in popularity of laptops, it is very common for users to frequently reconnect to a previously visited network. In order to improve user experience in roaming scenarios, where the user connects back to a previously visited network where the user had a valid DHCP lease, DHCP network hint has been implemented in Windows 7 OS. DHCP network hint helps in identifying the correct DHCP configuration for a previously visited network and then using the configuration opportunistically. Network hint used in order to uniquely identify different network is SSID (Service Set Identifier) of a network...

Infoblox offers management for Microsoft DNS, DHCP servers

IP address management vendor Infoblox Monday introduced an appliance that the company says will help IT managers tackling DNS and DHCP on Microsoft Windows servers reduce manual labor, support compliance efforts and improve operational efficiencies around managing IP space.

Infoblox IPAM WinConnect is an appliance designed to help customers managing IP addresses using Microsoft management DNS and DHCP servers. The product sits in the data center and communicates with the Windows DNS and DHCP servers via the network, providing IT managers with a common view into both environments as well as automation and administrative features. The product would augment a customer's existing Windows IP address management tools, according to industry watchers, who say many customers depend on out-of-date and insufficient tools to manage IT addresses.

Windows Server 2008 DNS Block Feature

Windows Server 2008 introduces a DNS block feature that may affect the ISA Server automatic discovery when implementing the WPAD mechanism using a Windows Server 2008 DNS Server.

The block feature provides a global query block list to reduce vulnerability associated with dynamic DNS updates. Dynamic update makes it possible for DNS client computers to register and dynamically update their resource records with a DNS server whenever a client changes its network address or host name. This reduces the need for manual administration of zone records, especially for clients that frequently move or change locations and use DHCP to obtain an IP address. This convenience comes at a cost, however, because an authorized client can register any unused host name, even a host name that might have special significance for certain applications. This can allow a malicious user to "hijack" a special name and divert certain types of network traffic to that user's computer. WPAD is a commonly deployed protocol vulnerable to this type of hijacking, and by default WPAD look up is disabled by the blocking mechanism.

Microsoft acknowledges Linux threat to the Windows client

Microsoft has acknowledged for the first time, that linux is a direct threat to the Windows client, naming Red Hat and Canonical (Primary sponsor of Ubuntu) as competitors to it's Windows client business in it's annual report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. As stated in the filing by Microsoft, "Client faces strong competition from well-established companies with differing approaches to the PC market, competing commercial software products, including variants of Unix, are supplied by competitors such as Apple, Canonical, and Red Hat." The acknowledgment of this points out that linux has finally gained ground, and that it now puts up a viable fight against the Windows client.

VMware bugs highlight virtualization security risks

A set of newly discovered flaws in components of VMware's virtual machine software has called attention to some of the security risks associated with the practice of running virtual computers on a single system.

VMware has updated its products to fix the security bugs, disclosed Wednesday, but users who have not updated their software could face serious security risks thanks to a trio of flaws in the DHCP server that ships with VMware.

The DHCP software is used to assign IP addresses to the different virtual machines running within VMware, but IBM researchers discovered that it can be exploited to gain control of the computer. That could be very bad news for someone running a lot of applications on the same VMware box, said Tom Cross, a researcher with IBM's Internet Security Systems group. "By exploiting this vulnerability, you get complete control of any of the machines that are running on that virtual environment," he said. ..

Windows 7 Driver Compatibility Evidence Seen

A day after someone noticed a "Windows 7 Client" category popping up on Windows Server Update Services, another curious enthusiast on the Neowin forums has also noticed a sudden prevalence of "Windows 7 Client" drivers on Microsoft's Update Catalog - the online library of drivers which Windows uses to automatically install.

A simple search for "Windows 7 Client" reveals more than 1000 drivers already available. These drivers range from the big brands from Nvidia, ATI, Intel and Broadcom to even miscellaneous display drivers. Whilst it is true all drivers approved after June 1 should have been tested on Windows 7, most of these drivers date back to early 2007 suggesting most drivers have just been carried over from the latest WHQL release.
