13.2.2009DHCP Network Hint in Windows 7
With the increase in popularity of laptops, it is very common for users to frequently reconnect to a previously visited network. In order to improve
user experience in roaming scenarios, where the user connects back to a previously visited network where the user had a valid DHCP lease, DHCP network
hint has been implemented in Windows 7 OS. DHCP network hint helps in identifying the correct DHCP configuration for a previously visited network and
then using the configuration opportunistically. Network hint used in order to uniquely identify different network is SSID (Service Set Identifier) of

26.07.2006VMware bugs highlight virtualization security risks
A set of newly discovered flaws in components of VMware's virtual machine software has called attention to some of the security risks associated with
the practice of running virtual computers on a single system.
VMware has updated its products to fix the security bugs, disclosed
Wednesday, but users who have not updated their software could face serious security risks thanks to a trio of flaws in the DHCP server that ships
with VMware.
The DHCP software is used to assign IP addresses to the different virtual machines running within VMware, but IBM
researchers discovered that it can be exploited to gain control of the computer. That could be very bad news for someone running a lot of applications
on the same VMware box, said Tom Cross, a researcher with IBM's Internet Security Systems group. "By exploiting this vulnerability, you get complete
control of any of the machines that are running on that virtual environment," he said. ..

18.01.2008Comcast: Wiretaps Cost $1,000 a Pop
Government authorities serving Comcast, the largest cable operator and second largest ISP in the United States, with wiretap requests under federal
wiretap statutes are required to pay $1,000 per request, with a service fee of $750 each month after, says a recently leaked copy of the
Comcast Cable Law Enforcement Handbook (PDF).
The document, which is presumably given to law enforcement personnel involved in investigations, notes several other interesting policies
regarding Comcasts compliance: in one example, FBI agents are required to hand-deliver
National Security
Letters to Comcasts headquarters, located in Philadelphia.
The handbook also describes strict rules for positively
identifying wiretap targets before a wiretap can be installed, and includes specific instructions and examples on verifying a suspects IP address and
other information. Law enforcement authorities can generally do this within 180 days the date in question, as DHCP logs “ Comcast subscribers are not
given static IPs, and instead are frequently assigned dynamic IPs via DHCP “ expire and are purged within six months.

23.10.2007TechEd 2007: Virtualization to Become Ninth Server Core Role
At a morning session
introducing many to the
window-less Server Core
installation option in the
forthcoming Windows Server
2008, Microsoft product
manager Andrew Mason made it
official: Windows
Virtualization Services
(code-named "Viridian") will
become the ninth role
available for the trim server
option, joining Internet
Information Services 7
announced last Monday and
other common, unattended role
such as DNS server, DHCP
server, and Active Directory
Application Mode (now called
AD LDS).
This
addition may be both welcome
and extremely important for
enterprises working to create
homogeneity of services where
heterogenous (OS-specific)
applications are deployed. Now
SUSE Linux and other systems
can be hosted by servers that
don't need to waste space
managing Windows printer and
display drivers, such as
DirectX and Direct3D, when
they're not ever going to be
used there anyway.
Monday's announcement
referred to IIS7 as the
seventh Server Core role. Yes,
we're keeping count, and no,
you're not asleep. There is
indeed an eighth role, and
based on the graph we saw this
morning, Windows Media
Services is that #8 role. This
will enable an unattended
server to stream media, even
though it's not necessary for
that server to display or play
that media locally...

20.03.2008Windows Server 2008 DNS Block Feature
Windows Server 2008 introduces a DNS block feature that may affect the ISA Server automatic discovery when implementing the WPAD mechanism using a
Windows Server 2008 DNS Server.
The block feature provides a global query block list to reduce vulnerability associated with
dynamic DNS updates. Dynamic update makes it possible for DNS client computers to register and dynamically update their resource records with a DNS
server whenever a client changes its network address or host name. This reduces the need for manual administration of zone records, especially for
clients that frequently move or change locations and use DHCP to obtain an IP address. This convenience comes at a cost, however, because an
authorized client can register any unused host name, even a host name that might have special significance for certain applications. This can allow a
malicious user to "hijack" a special name and divert certain types of network traffic to that user's computer. WPAD is a commonly deployed protocol
vulnerable to this type of hijacking, and by default WPAD look up is disabled by the blocking mechanism.

29.05.2007Ubuntu's latest OS not so Gutsy
Ubuntu fanboys have been crying into their beers after discovering internet connection problems with Canonical's latest open source Linux
distribution operating system, dubbed the Gutsy Gibbon.
The latest version (7.10) of the increasingly popular free OS, which
launched last week, was punted to the masses by Ubuntu as being "delivered on a stable, easy to use and learn platform".
But
one reader contacted El Reg telling us that he had no choice but to revert back to Ubuntu 7.04 to get his computer working online, because of issues
with IPv6 implementation and DHCP-handling.
winbeta.org -
24.10.2007One less reason to adopt IPv6?
For a decade, IPv6 proponents have pushed this upgrade to the Internets main communications protocol because of its three primary benefits: a
gargantuan address space, end-to-end security, and easier network administration through automatic device configuration.
Now it
turns out that one of these IPv6 benefits autoconfiguration may not be such a boon for corporate network managers. A growing number of IPv6 experts
say that corporations probably will skip autoconfiguration and instead stick with DHCP, which has been updated to support IPv6.
Autoconfiguration vs. DHCPv6 has become a point of contention among IPv6 proponents. As recently as last month, the IETF the standards body that
created IPv6 and DHCPv6 held a lively online debate about rethinking autoconfiguration in light of DHCPv6.

04.03.2007WPAD Vulnerability possible security risk
Microsoft is investigating new public reports of a vulnerability in the way Windows resolves hostnames that do not include a fully-qualified domain
name (FQDN). The technology that the vulnerability affects is Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD). Microsoft has not received any information to indicate
that this vulnerability has been publicly used to attack customers, and Microsoft is not aware of any customer impact at this time. Microsoft is
aggressively investigating the public reports. Customers whose domain name begins in a third-level or deeper domain, such as “contoso.co.usÂ, or for
whom the following mitigating factors do not apply, are at risk from this vulnerability.
Microsoft said: "Upon completion of
this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to help protect our customers. This may include providing a security update through our
monthly release process or providing an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs."
