Google street view car hits a bridge

Google street view is not only helpful but it has produced many quality blunders that keep us coming back for more. In the latest edition of a Google street view bork up, a Google street view driver tried to drive under a low bridge, the bridge won. In the images below you can clearly see the bridge that the driver tried to go under but in the following pictures you see that the attempt resulted in a bent camera rig as the following pictures are looking straight up. Google must have a good sense of humor as it tends to leave these kinds of pictures live.

Mozilla Labs: Prism

Mozilla Labs is launching a series of experiments to bridge the divide in the user experience between web applications and desktop apps and to explore new usability models as the line between traditional desktop and new web applications continues to blur. Unlike Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight, we’re not building a proprietary platform to replace the web. We think the web is a powerful and open platform for this sort of innovation, so our goal is to identify and facilitate the development of enhancements that bring the advantages of desktop apps to the web platform.

At last, a bridge between Windows Home Server and Media Center

With this week's release of Power Pack 2 for Home Server, Microsoft is filling a very important gap. Up until recently, the company had been maintaining that the place for users to store videos and multimedia was on their Media Center computers (generally Windows Vista Ultimate-based systems), and the place for their "everyday files" was their Home Server. But the biggest and most cumbersome "everyday files" are multimedia files, including those that deserve to be streamed and accessed by Media Center. While setting up Media Center to include a Home Server folder as one of its "watch folders" is one option for getting files listed, that's not as rich as setting up a streaming connection...

Neowin Review: Fence your desktop with Stardock Fences

Windows Desktop - A place where every installed application likes to place a shortcut and also a place to hold all your shortcuts and favorites. Things can become very messy when you have lots of desktop icons, like mine below: Well, there's not that many on my desktop, but I still place them in categories. Microsoft Office Apps all reside together and Windows Live Apps reside together. Each time I bring a new shortcut to my desktop, Windows places them in a separate order which it thinks to be right and then I move that shortcut icon to its appropriate group.

Windows Search 4.0 vs. Google Desktop 5.5

Brad Linder: Microsoft released an updated version of Windows Search, its free desktop search client the other day. And while there are dozens of excellent desktop search clients, including a few good free ones, it seems inevitable that people are going to compare Windows Search to Google Desktop. Because you know, any time either company releases something kind of cool someones assumes that it's just a ripoff of a product offered by the other. Or Apple.

Anyway, we've been using Windows Search for the past few days and we thought we'd let you know how it stacks up against Google Desktop. Read on for the results.

D-Link Announces HD Media Streaming to TV

D-Link announced the Xtreme N Media Bridge, capable of wirelessly streaming high-definition content from a PC to an HD-capable TV, today at the WinHEC conference in LA. The company plans to release the Xtreme N Media Bridge, model number DAP1555, in Q3 this year for under $200. The setup uses a pair of devices that each looks much like a regular wireless router, with two antennas.

One device connects to your home router with an Ethernet cable, and the other to a TV-attached, Ethernet-capable device such as a game console. Microsoft demonstrated using the Media Bridge to play a movie in today's conference keynote using an Xbox 360, but D-Link says it will work with other devices. The devices use 802.11n, and offer Microsoft's new Rally feature for easy network discovery and setup in Vista.

WinHEC 2007: Day 2

On my second day at WinHEC I really wanted to make it a point to stop by the Expo Hall and take a closer look at all the really cool hardware. So I spent about two hours walking around the Expo Hall and talking with folks until the Expo Hall closed. Microsoft's Pavilion had numerous kiosks set up with product experts at those kiosks to answer any questions. At the Microsoft Pavilion, I caught up with one of Nick's colleagues Matt Krueger who was helping show off some Mobile PC's that take advantage of Windows Vista and it's technologies.

After talking with Matt, I spotted the HD Media Bridge kiosk and Network Attached Storage kiosk right next to it. I got a closer look at the D-Link Xtreme N Duo MediaBridge units. Right next to the Media Bridge units was the Maxtor (now under Seagate) network storage device that are use Windows Rally. You can check out Maxtor's selection of network storage devices here.

Three Replacements for Windows Active Desktop

MakeUseOf.com: Active Desktop, a feature introduced with Internet Explorer 4.0, and included in every Windows version since then until Windows Server 2003, allowed users to place websites on their desktop. While it enjoyed little widespread use, and often was subject to criticism, the idea of placing websites on the desktop is still an appealing idea to some (provided you enjoy widgets on the desktop).

In this post I’ll be exploring replacements for the now defunct Active Desktop feature - Snippage, AveDesktopSites, and minibrowser.

2009: Linux and the desktop

Choosing a desktop platform usually involves the choice between Windows or Macintosh. There are a few factors which people consider when they are choosing a desktop platform. In no particular order, people want application compatibility, stability, security, performance, and ease of use. When we look at desktop market share, we can see the following (as of statistics reported in October of 2008): Windows boasts the lead with 91% market share, down 5% from March of 2003. Mac holds 6% market share, an increase of 4% from March, 2003. Finally, Linux has doubled its market share since 2003 with a current 4%.
