30.10.2006PowerPoint Prototyping Toolkit (release 0.1)
Long Zheng: After hearing about the impact and success it had in Microsoft, I couldnt wait to get my hands on prototyping in PowerPoint 2007. Amongst
a few things Manuel Clement suggested a few weeks ago in his presentation about świreframe prototyping with Office PowerPoint 2007ł, was to create a
toolkit of commonly used GUI components to copy and paste when designing the prototype screens. Thats what I set out to build.
My
vision for a toolkit is to contain a set of all the possible and feasible GUI components you could otherwise use in designing a real Windows
application or browser application. For example, it should include buttons, drop-down lists, window frames, toolbars, dialog boxes and address bars.
Of course there are probably as many of those as there are stars, so Ill just have to focus on the most commonly used ones.

17.10.2007Crysis demo performance in-depth
Crysis is a highly anticipated first person shooter developed exclusively for the PC by Crytek, the makers of the award-winning Far Cry. The demo
offers PC gamers a quick look at what will possibly be the most advanced FPS ever created, you just have to swallow the huge 1.8GB download first. Im
sure many will agree that the demo is well worth the download though, offering the entire first level of the game which represents "roughly 45
minutes" of pure gameplay.
Today we are going to see how the various mid-range and high-end graphics cards handle this new and
exciting first person shooter. There will also be some brief visual quality comparisons along with some CPU scaling and DX9 vs. DX10 performance
charts. The single-player demo supports both DX10 and DX9 rendering in Vista while Windows XP users are limited to DX9. While the game has been said
to include 64-bit support, the demo can only be run in 32-bit mode, so there are no 32-bit vs. 64-bit comparisons just yet.

13.11.2007Quake Wars demo now available
As expected, id Software and Splash Damage have released the PC demo for their upcoming team-based multiplayer game, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. The
demo
can be nabbed over at FileShack and
weighs in at a relatively reasonableby today's standard, at least727MB. Folks who download the demo will be able to enjoy the upcoming title's
Valley map, which is playable either online with other players or with bots.
According to a Shacknews report from last week,
minimum system requirements for the demo include a Pentium 4 2.8GHz or Athlon XP 2800+ processor, 512MB of RAM, a 128MB GeForce FX 5700 or Radeon 9700
graphics card, a DirectX 9.0c-compliant sound card, and a copy of Windows XP.
A note to users of AMD's latest Radeon HD
2000-series graphics cards, though: AMD
has released a
hotfix that it says improves performance in the Quake Wars demo. This hotfix is available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista.

11.09.2007Flight Simulator X Demo out
tonight
Microsoft is apparently ready
to release its Flight
Simulator X playable demo.
After seeing so much hype
about its graphics, and the
use it will eventually make of
the upcoming DirectX 10
Application Programming
Interface, it's finally going
to be available to public in
its first playable form as
soon as tonight, in
approximately 1h 25 minutes,
as of this writing.
A countdown is
available at source of the
news, GameSpot. GameSpot also
reports the demo will offer
the location of St. Maarten, 2
airports and 3 missions of
increasing difficulty, meaning
it's a pretty complete
demo.
UPDATE:
It's out, though don't
expect to play today. The
servers are already struggling
over the load, resulting in
extremely slow speeds.

08.01.2009Microsoft to provide Facebook-Toolkit-like add-on for Windows Live developers
Microsoft is planning on fielding in November a set of new tools that will support Windows Live developers.
The forthcoming
Windows Live toolbox kit will include add-on tools that will work with Visual Studio 2008, the Expression family of designer
tools and the Express hobbyist tools. the first deliverable will support Visual Studio 2008 and possibly also Visual Studio 2005.
Microsoft is planning to officially roll out the Visual studio Toolkit for Windows Live simultaneously at the Dev Connections show in Las Vegas
and TechEd Europe. (My bet is the rollout will be of a beta of the toolkit, though I dont know this for sure.)
LiveSide.Net
obtained some preliminary details about the new toolkit during the recent Mix UK conference. Microsoft execs told LiveSide that the new tools are
going to look and work a lot like the
Facebook Developer
Toolkit that Microsoft announced in May 2007. In fact, the new Visual Studio Toolkit for Windows Live is being developed by Microsofts Doug
Handler, who did a lot of the work on the Facebook toolkit in terms of using a drag-drop-to-canvas model, the Softies told LiveSide.)

17.09.2007Crysis demo un-postponed, out now
You know how the Crysis demo was supposed to be delayed until tomorrow? Well, as it turns out, Crytek and EA have decided to release the demo one day
"early," effectively un-postponing it. The demo
is available on
FileShack, and it will eventually go up on Nvidia's
Nzone
website, as well.
As we explained earlier, the demo includes "Contact," the first level from the full game's single-player
campaign. Crytek has also tossed in its Sandbox 2 in-game editor, giving modders a chance to sharpen their mod-sticks before the full game comes out
on November 16.
