Quake Wars demo now available

As expected, id Software and Splash Damage have released the PC demo for their upcoming team-based multiplayer game, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. The demo can be nabbed over at FileShack and weighs in at a relatively reasonableby today's standard, at least727MB. Folks who download the demo will be able to enjoy the upcoming title's Valley map, which is playable either online with other players or with bots.

According to a Shacknews report from last week, minimum system requirements for the demo include a Pentium 4 2.8GHz or Athlon XP 2800+ processor, 512MB of RAM, a 128MB GeForce FX 5700 or Radeon 9700 graphics card, a DirectX 9.0c-compliant sound card, and a copy of Windows XP.

A note to users of AMD's latest Radeon HD 2000-series graphics cards, though: AMD has released a hotfix that it says improves performance in the Quake Wars demo. This hotfix is available for both Windows XP and Windows Vista.

Flight Simulator X Demo out tonight

Microsoft is apparently ready to release its Flight Simulator X playable demo. After seeing so much hype about its graphics, and the use it will eventually make of the upcoming DirectX 10 Application Programming Interface, it's finally going to be available to public in its first playable form as soon as tonight, in approximately 1h 25 minutes, as of this writing.

A countdown is available at source of the news, GameSpot. GameSpot also reports the demo will offer the location of St. Maarten, 2 airports and 3 missions of increasing difficulty, meaning it's a pretty complete demo.

UPDATE: It's out, though don't expect to play today. The servers are already struggling over the load, resulting in extremely slow speeds.

Crysis demo un-postponed, out now

You know how the Crysis demo was supposed to be delayed until tomorrow? Well, as it turns out, Crytek and EA have decided to release the demo one day "early," effectively un-postponing it. The demo is available on FileShack, and it will eventually go up on Nvidia's Nzone website, as well.

As we explained earlier, the demo includes "Contact," the first level from the full game's single-player campaign. Crytek has also tossed in its Sandbox 2 in-game editor, giving modders a chance to sharpen their mod-sticks before the full game comes out on November 16.

Crysis Demo FUBAR

Rock-Paper-Shotgun reports that hackers have reduced the Crysis demo to ashes. Someone discovered that a whole bunch of stuff, including lots of formerly-locked vehicles and guns, can be made available in the demo map with a few tweaks, downloadable from the RPS link.

Whether this was an oversight on the part of the Crytek developers who created the demo or just dumb luck is up in the air. Crytek folks didn't immediately respond to requests for comments. The dudes at Blues News helpfully point out that exploiting the demo might spoil the game for those who plan to buy it, so hack at your own risk.

Crysis demo performance in-depth

Crysis is a highly anticipated first person shooter developed exclusively for the PC by Crytek, the makers of the award-winning Far Cry. The demo offers PC gamers a quick look at what will possibly be the most advanced FPS ever created, you just have to swallow the huge 1.8GB download first. Im sure many will agree that the demo is well worth the download though, offering the entire first level of the game which represents "roughly 45 minutes" of pure gameplay.

Today we are going to see how the various mid-range and high-end graphics cards handle this new and exciting first person shooter. There will also be some brief visual quality comparisons along with some CPU scaling and DX9 vs. DX10 performance charts. The single-player demo supports both DX10 and DX9 rendering in Vista while Windows XP users are limited to DX9. While the game has been said to include 64-bit support, the demo can only be run in 32-bit mode, so there are no 32-bit vs. 64-bit comparisons just yet.

Not much else to say about this one, other than go download it now!   The demo here offers you a tutorial and a small-ish section of a scenario map named Towson, that I believe offers singleplayer and 2 player multiplayer. The demo clocks in at 265 megs, and from what I can tell from early reviews, you should download the demo at once, or I will be angry. Windows Server virtualization at TechEd 2007

For those of you amongst the 14,000 attending TechEd 2007 next week in Orlando, expect to see and learn alot about virtualization.

It all starts with Bob Muglia's keynote on Monday where Jeff Woolsey will reprise his role of virtualization demo dude. Jeff will demo Windows Server 2008 server core installation running an IDS build of Windows Server virtualization, managed by both MOM and System Center Virtual Machine Manager.

I'd expect to see VM creation, interop and network load balancing with limited disruption of service. I'm hoping to see V-to-V conversion, from ESX Server to Windows Server virtualization. I'll be watching on Monday, and I expect the webcast to be available from http://www.microsoft.com/press pass/events/teched/default.msp x>here...

New Windows 7 beta released to select testers

Today, Microsoft released its first wave of invitations for the Windows 7 beta test. The invitations were only sent to a small, select group of 'technical beta' testers. In the email sent to invited testers, Microsoft states that the beta is not available for download right away. A reliable Russian website (demo:demo) has claimed that the beta Microsoft will upload is build 7000.0.081212-1400, built December 12th. They also claim the build will be made available to testers within the next 48 hours. In the email, Microsoft also mentioned their website where it has placed a wealth of information about Windows 7 and mentions the beta. This will likely be updated in the future.

Touching Windows 7

Steven Sinfosky: Weve come a long way in engineering Windows 7 since we first provided an engineering preview of Windows 7 and the work we are doing to support the touch interface paradigm back at the D: All Things Digital conference.  We chose to kick-off the discussion about engineering Windows 7 with touch scenarios because we know this is a long-lead effort that requires work across the full ecosystem to fully realize the benefit.  For Windows 7, touch support is engineered by building on our advances in input technology we began with the TabletPC work on Windows XP...

Crysis demo in 14 hours

The Crysis single-player demo is set to launch worldwide in 14 hours time, according to a countdown on the website set up for the taster of Crytek's FPS.

However, it should already be in the hands of those who have pre-ordered the game, although there have been reports of the early birds experiencing problems with getting the demo to work.

Keep an eye on here for the worldwide release.

In addition to featuring a slice of Crysis single-player - which we believe is the game's first level - the demo includes a game editor.
