50 ways to lose your data

Disk drives are marvelous devices. Especially when they go “clunk” and stop working. I’m not kidding: at least you know your data is hosed. I prefer that to the silent data corruption you don’t find out about until you can’t access a file or your OS starts freezing. Or a RAID rebuild fails.

No fix for data corruption bug in Windows Home Server

Two months after acknowledging a serious data corruption bug exists in Windows Home Server, Microsoft has admitted it still has no fix. The latest update to its knowledgebase entry essentially says, "still workin' on it". The bug relates to a little known, but frequently used, method of writing hidden data to NTFS file systems, which is incompatible with the disk pooling strategy used in Home Server.

The software giant first acknowledged the problem on December 21 last year, providing a list of programs that could cause data on a Windows Home Server to become corrupted, including Windows Vista Photo Gallery, Windows Live Photo Gallery, OneNote 2007, OneNote 2003, Outlook 2007, Money 2007, SyncToy 2.0 beta, QuickBooks and uTorrent.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Public Beta

Microsoft has detailed its plans to release a public beta of its Windows Home Server Power Pack.

The update will include a fix for the data corruption issues that have plagued the OS since its release.

In a message to potential testers the company said:

"Due to the nature of the shared folder data corruption bug (KB #946676) a broad beta test program with sufficient time for feedback is required. The time line for a final release will depend on this feedback and testing, in order to deliver a fix of the highest quality. To meet our goals for the beta test we need the number of beta testers who are actively using and testing the Power Pack 1 beta to ramp up very quickly"

The company is asking for anyone currently using Home Server to sign up to the beta to ensure the data corruption issue is fixed.

Should Microsoft Release Windows Home Server PP1 Now?

Terry Walsh: Todd Headrick (who is the Product Planner over on the Windows Home Server team) is seeking some feedback from the community on a question. Earlier today, Microsoft revealed that the Data Corruption bug fix was currently scheduled for June 2008 - previously, we’ve been advised that Power Pack 1 would be held back until the bug fix was ready - here’s Todd’s question:

Knowing that the home server team has a current estimate of June, 2008 for the fix for the data corruption issue, do people believe that the team should “dust off” the Power Pack 1 code and release prior to a fix for the data corruption issue?

Head on over to the Microsoft Forums and let the team know your thoughts - if you want it, who knows, they may do it.

Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Public Beta Released

The Windows Home Server team has announced the availability of a Windows Home Server Power Pack 1 Release Candidate for public beta testing. The update package is now available from Microsoft’s Connect site (Registration req.)

The most important update in the Power pack is the data corruption issue:
“When certain programs are used to edit or transfer files that are stored on a Windows Home Server-based computer that has more than one hard drive, the files may become corrupted”.
According to an Microsoft email sent to beta testers this has now been fixed:
“While internal testing so far indicates that we have fixed the data corruption bug in the beta release, the whole point of a beta test is to validate internal testing”

Windows Home Server bug corrupts iTunes, Zune, lots of other apps

Engadget: Uh-oh -- it looks like the nasty Windows Home Server bug that corrupts data affects quite a few more apps than Microsoft initially let on. The company's just updated the WHS support note to include reports of data corruption when using iTunes, the Zune software, WinAmp, WMP 11, Photoshop, and a host of other applications -- and the problem's expanded in scope as well, now affecting files saved to the server in addition to files edited on the server. That basically makes WHS useless as of right now -- if you can't trust your data on it, there's no point -- so let's hope there's a fix on the way.

Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Gets a 200% Boost with Datalight Software

Datalight, Inc. today announced support for the Microsoft Windows Embedded CE 6.0 platform within its patented data management software. Datalight Reliance and FlashFX Pro can double performance on Windows Embedded CE 6.0 when implemented together.

As embedded device memory requirements grow more complex, the case for professional data management software becomes more compelling. Datalight FlashFX Pro is a flash media manager that offers drop-in support for over 200 different flash parts. Reliance is a file system that gives developers control over performance without risking data corruption. When used together, Reliance and FlashFX Pro create a seamless flash file system that vastly outperforms native and "home grown" solutions, with performance increases for some operations of over 200%.

FlashFX Pro is ideally suited for projects where performance cannot be sacrificed. Test results have shown that when using FlashFX Pro in a Windows Embedded CE 6.0 environment, write performance on NAND flash can be increased by more than 200%, while read performance improves by at least 20%...

Windows Home Server NTFS Compression Bug Fixed

WB: Note that this bugfix is unrelated to the other major data corruption bug found here.

NTFS compression can be enabled on an individual file, folder or at the hard drive level and is sometimes enabled by users to save disk space on a home computer. More information on the bug and a link to download the fix at KB950190.

Warning: Windows 7 beta could corrupt your MP3s

Several reports from users using the latest leaked build of Windows 7 indicate a potential data corruption issue using Microsoft's Windows Media Player 12. Windows 7 beta 1 build 7000 leaked over the Christmas holidays and a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that there is a bug which affects the leaked build. Approximately 2-3 seconds will get shaved off the beginning of MP3s if you have set your Windows Media Player 12 settings to retrieve information from the internet and update files. The default configuration for WMP12 sets this if you use the "express" option during setup. "The problem only happens when you edit metadata on a certain class of MP3 file (a file with a header larger than 16KB).

Realtek WHQL Vista network drivers silently corrupt data

One of the three most dreaded words in the computer world is œSILENT DATA CORRUPTIONœ. Your data gets corrupted just enough that it isnt readily detectable by most applications and operating systems and you think your datas good until you actually need to use it.

This weekend as I was doing some routine maintenance tasks on my home computer and moving some data over my Gigabit LAN (now cheap and common), I got bit badly by silent data corruption.

My Realtek network adapter which is one of the most ubiquitous on-board Gigabit Adapters in the world was the culprit and it had been causing me some massive grief for months and I just didnt know it. Almost every modern Desktop Motherboard I know uses this particular on-board Gigabit adapter and I have to wonder how many millions of people are being affected by this issue and I have to wonder if this problem exists in any of the Server-based adapters from Realtek. More specifically, Realtek driver version 6.191 was the culprit.
