Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet for Windows XP

The Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet adds a new 'Color' item to the Windows control panel, providing a single place to view and edit color management settings in Windows XP. Using it, you can install and uninstall color profiles, change color profile associations for displays, printers and scanners, view detailed properties for color profiles (including a 3D rendering of the color space gamut), and rename color profiles, keeping the filenames and "internal" names consistent.
This tool also enables Windows to automatically adjust the gamut curve of the display when a color profile containing gamut table information is set as the default profile for the display. Typically, such profiles are created by custom monitor calibration tools, such as those available from ColorVision, GretagMacbeth, and X-Rite. If a color profile has this information, it is shown with an asterisk (*) in the user interface.

Using the Microsoft Color Control Panel Applet, you can:

* Install and uninstall ICC color profiles
* Inspect, rename, and compare two different color profiles
* View a 3D graphics plot of color profile color gamuts
* Associate color profiles with devices such as printers, monitors, and scanners
* Apply custom color gamut adjustments to one or more displays ???on the fly???
* Set up display calibration reminders at intervals you specify

Application Specific Glass Colorization in Windows 7?

Microsoft might be introducing application specific glass renderings. The color of the glass frame around a window can be changed in Vista, but the change is global to the system. The color of any particular window glass frame can not be set by choice. But, how about being able to change the color/opacity level of a the glass frame of any application through defined events or commands? According to a Patent number 7418668:

A method for changing a color value and/or level of opacity value of a glass appearance window frame for an application window is described. The method includes steps of determining a defined color value and a defined level of opacity value to apply to a glass appearance window frame and displaying the glass appearance window frame in accordance with the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value. A command may be received to apply the defined color value and the defined level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame, thereby applying the defined color value and level of opacity value to the glass appearance window frame. Color values and/or level of opacity values may be changed automatically, be application specific, and/or be changed in response to receipt of an input from a user to change one or more portions of a default configuration.

HP Color Match: Extreme makeover for cellphones

Hewlett-Packard could soon turn mobile phones into shopping advisors with a color-matching prototype technology it demonstrated on Wednesday.

The technology can be used in anything that requires the assessment of color application, said Nina Bhatti, principal scientist at the digital imaging and printing lab in HP Labs. It is particularly applicable to cosmetics, where buyers can use the service to buy a product that matches their skin color, she said.

Wikipedia to begin color coding untrustworthy text

Hot on the heels of Wikipedia's decision to begin using editors for certain pages, they've announced another method of attempting to keep things accurate on their website. According to Wired, the organization will begin color coding the text of their entries in orange, to indicate untrustworthiness, based on a couple of factors. The feature will be aptly named "WikiTrust", and will color the text after analyzing the reliability of the author in question, as well as how long the text has been on the entry. Virgil Griffith, a Wikipedia software developer and neuroscientist at the California Institute of Technology, said, "They've hit on the fundamentally Darwinian nature of Wikipedia.

Black Maximized Windows Borders Fixed

The Windows team posted an exciting post on their new Shell:Revealed blog, giving people who wanted the black maximized window borders to disappear a rest, because the problem is apparently fixed starting from today's builds. Due to the very short time limit until the upcoming RC2 build, we're still unsure whether the final version distributed to testers will feature that change.

The "fix", although quite welcome, isn't really what people asked for: "In the end, we decided that we like the black and think it is the right thing to do, but we want to respect the user's color choice for users who bother to make a change. So - starting in today's build, we have significantly backed off the amount of black that is mixed in with the user's color for maximized windows". Basically, they are offering people the choice to customize the color, although there will still be a black shade to it. The fix isn't apparently very noticeable on the default color, though it is most useful on strong colors.

Windows Vista timetable now a little clearer

Microsoft has clarified a target launch date for Windows Vista and at the same time been somewhat ambiguous on the steps between here and there...

On Tuesday Microsoft held a private chat session for beta testers to map out the planned steps from here to Windows Vista's launch date of August 31, 2006.

Some beta testers came away more confused than ever with the vague answers given to questions regarding Beta 2 and future CTP (Community Technology Preview) release dates.

Microsoft has not used the CTP format for releasing an Operating System before. It was previously used on products such as SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005, with quite some sucess. CTP releases are made widely available to testers and are seen by some as a subtle way of building product awareness before its launch...

Microsoft hopes scRGB will improve photo colors

For a computer, dealing with color is just another math problem. And Microsoft wants to change the way your PC counts.

The company has developed a color space--a way to encode colors as numbers a computer can process--called scRGB. If the company succeeds in getting it to catch on, the technology could help add depth and richness to photos taken with digital cameras and viewed on a computer or TV screen.

Today's cameras and computers usually employ a color space called sRGB, developed in the 1990s by Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard, that describes colors as a particular combination of red, green, and blue. But sRGB is limited both in the breadth of colors it can display and in the subtlety of the tonal shades that separate bright from dark, and scRGB is designed to lift those limits.

Now that it has been quite a while since it revealed Windows Vista's official editions, Microsoft is trying to find ways to avoid people from being lost because of the fact that all seven (nine if you take the european "N" editions into account) editions are on a single DVD, and to simplify the user upgrade process.

It is in that in mind that Microsoft created a color code for all Windows Vista editions, the known ones listed below:

I†™m Jeremy Mazner, Group Manager of the Windows Vista platform evangelism team (the same folks behind www.seewindowsvista.co m),  we make sure early adopters of the Windows Vista platform have the information they need about UAC.  While we most often work 1:1 with partners, we recently asked Ian Griffiths to record some short screencasts to share this information with the dev community at large.  Check out How To: Tell Vista's UAC What Privilege Level Your App Requires (24 minutes, but worth it!) and How To: Use Vista's UAC Feature To Avoid Always Requiring Admin Rights (18 minutes) to see Ian walk through the code needed to embed a UAC manifest, and refactor an application so that the main executable runs as standard user, and calls an elevated COM object when it needs to do administrative tasks.
