02.08.2006AJAX gives software a fresh

An emerging Web

to shake up the status quo in
PC software and blur the line

Over the years, desktop
applications tied to a

become entrenched as the main

AJAX, a set of development
techniques standardized over
the past eight years, could
change all that by bringing
more sophisticated interfaces

that, backers are hoping it

04.10.2005The Future of Windows Live Mail Desktop
There hasn't been much news
on Windows Live Mail desktop
since 2006, with a minor
update being released in
February. With most Windows
Live watchers expecting a v1
release at the beginning of
the year, many are wondering
what is happening to the
product. Dare Obasanjo even
joked at a rename to Outlook
Express Live.
It seems to be that
Microsoft is rethinking its
mail client strategy, with the
belief that two distinct free
mail clients for Windows Vista
(Windows Mail and Windows Live
Mail desktop) is not the way
to move forward.
Instead, Mail
desktop will evolve to become
an enhanced Windows Mail
client, which when installed
will replace Vista's Windows
Mail. For those familiar with
Mail desktop there will not be
a huge change however for
those using Windows Mail they
will benefit from the
integration of Live services.
While the
name and details of the new
product are unconfirmed,
hopefully we should soon see a
beta of Windows Live Mail for
Vista.

31.10.2008Vista Desktop Search Annoyance
I thought people might find this fix interesting because it annoyed the hell out of me when I first started using Vista. In the XP days, I was a huge
Windows Desktop Search (WDS) fan, and like many WDS fans Vista search wasn't that exciting because of new features but rather, it gave visibility to
mainstream windows users that desktop search would change the way they computer.
When I used WDS I typically indexed my whole
C: and I carried that practice over to Vista's indexing service. That's when I started having issues. I wanted to to search all my content on
the machine, but when I would search for any files in the Start Menu, I would never get any results returned on a search unless they were
applications. For example, if I was to search for an excel file, it would not return in the Start Menu even though it was located in "Documents" --
it was very frustrating.
As it turns outs, the quick fix was to change the start menu settings so that the search bar is set to
"search entire index" instead of the default "search this user's files." The problem arises due to the user changing the "indexed locations"
to include all of the "C:" when the Start Menu is set to "search this user's files." This is a known bug and will be fixed in Vista SP1.

05.09.2007How Merrill Lynch Plans To Virtualize Half Its Desktops
"Once the world figures this stuff out, this is going to be a huge change to the corporate landscape," Merrill Lynch chief architect Jeff Birnbaum
predicts.
The stuff Birnbaum's talking about is "stateless" desktop virtualization, which promises cost savings from
delivering the software that PCs need over a network using one-off virtual machines spun up in the data center. That should make it much cheaper to
manage, since IT departments can change, say, a setting on the Windows operating system once, and all employees get the change as soon as they access
their virtual desktops, rather than IT having to push the change to tens of thousands of PCs.

16.03.2009Free Vista Sunday, 3D desktop with Real Desktop Light
Jonathan Schlaffer: Vista has been an all-around disappointment and even those with SP1 have reason to complain. Those with problems are probably
more outspoken than those that dont but the issues keep piling up and Microsoft does little about them. This program may brighten up your Vista
experience a tiny bit.
Real Desktop comes it two
forms, Real Desktop Standard and Real Desktop Light; major differences set the two apart. With Real Desktop Standard you get all the features and
with Light, not so much.
The light version gives you a basic, fully 3D desktop environment. You can stack icons, drag them
anywhere on the desk, flip them around, upside down and several other neat things. What you cant do is change the wallpaper or orientation of the
camera. The other thing thats annoying is the light version lacks the ability to reset the icon positions; as you can see below, its very easy to
mess them up.

30.03.2008Microsoft To Change Windows Desktop Search In Vista SP1
The changes to be made to
"Desktop Search" are in
compliance with a complaint
filed by Google earlier this
year. In a filing made jointly
with the Justice Department on
Tuesday night, Microsoft said
it would change the search
feature as part of the first
service pack for Windows
Vista. In the filing,
Microsoft talked for the first
time about when service pack
one (SP1) for Windows Vista
would arrive, saying a beta
version will come by the end
of the year.
Background on the complaint
made by Google:
This
complaint, filed by Google
earlier this year, relates to
the desktop search
functionality in Windows Vista
that enables users to search
for files located on their
computer. This desktop search
functionality in Vista,
referred to as "Instant
Search" in Microsoft's
promotional materials, allows
users to enter a search query
into a text box and receive a
list of results from the hard
drive that contain the search
term, either in the name of
the file or program, in the
full text of the file, or in
the keywords associated with
that file. The desktop search
functionality relies on an
index that is updated whenever
files on the computer
change.
Google's
complaint contends that
desktop search in Windows
Vista is a new "Microsoft
Middleware Product" under the
Final Judgments. Regulators
said Tuesday: "Plaintiffs are
collectively satisfied that
this agreement will resolve
any issues the complaint may
raise under the Final
Judgments, provided that
Microsoft implements it as
promised." Under the
agreement, Microsoft will
create a mechanism whereby
both Computer Manufactures and
users (or Consumers) will be
able to choose a default
desktop search program, just
like they can choose a rival
browser or media player as
there default program, even
though those technologies are
built into Windows.

28.08.2008Microsoft will alter desktop search in Vista SP1, beta due by the end of the year (Update 3)
The New York Times is
providing a more detailed glimpse into
the settlement between
Microsoft and Google regarding
Vista's desktop search.
For one thing, we now know
the sources to the original
Reuters story were in fact the
lawyers involved in the case.
We also now know that the
changes involved to Vista
include the ability to let
Vista users "decide which
desktop search program they
want to use" and that
"selecting software from
Google or some other company
would no longer slow down the
computer as it does now":
Excerpts:
-
The settlement, reached in
recent days by state
prosecutors, the Justice
Department and Microsoft,
averted the prospect of
litigation over a complaint by
Google that Vista had been
designed to frustrate computer
users who want to use software
other than Microsofts to
search through files on their
hard drives.
-
Lawyers involved in the
proceeding said the changes to
Vista would allow consumers to
decide which desktop search
program they want to use, and
that selecting software from
Google or some other company
would no longer slow down the
computer as it does now. They
said that as part of the
settlement, Microsoft would
let Vista users know how to
change their desktop search
program. But the settlement
would not require Microsoft to
make all the changes that
Google had sought.
Updates:
1 - C|net is
now
reporting that the changes
to Vista's search features
will be made available as part
of the first service pack to
Windows Vista. Furthemore, in
the filing with the DOJ,
Microsoft noted that the beta
(not final) version of the of
the first service pack for
Vista is expected by the end
of the year.

23.05.2008New Windows Live Mail Desktop
Feature Revealed
Using their usual "More Than
Mail" blog, the Windows Live
Mail Desktop Beta team
revealed yet another feature
of it, along with a screenshot
of a recent build.
This build seems to
contain yet another UI change,
slight this time, along with
the so-called Active Search
feature.
"People spend the bulk
of their time online doing two
things: checking their email
and searching the web. We
thought we?d bring the two
together, so you can use
search to act on the ideas and
tasks piling up in your
inbox.
Today,
we?re excited to begin testing
a new feature we?re calling
Active Search for Windows Live
Mail Desktop Beta with a small
group of beta participants in
the US.
Active
Search bridges the gap between
your inbox and the broader web
using the power of search.
Using Active Search is
essentially the same as
conducting a ton of related
searches the old fashioned way
? by cutting and pasting terms
from your email into a
separate web browser ? only
without all the
effort."
