WindowBlinds 5 Brings Vista UI to XP

One of the most anticipated features in Windows Vista is its redesigned user interface that features glass-like title bars and alpha blended windows. But with the upgrade a year away, Stardock has released WindowBlinds 5 to offer Windows XP users the same capabilities right now.

Version 5 of Stardock's flagship Windows customization software has been in the works for over a year, according to company CEO Brad Wardell. Initially, Wardell's team was dubious that such features could be added without severe performance lag to Windows XP, which lacks Vista's new advanced graphics subsystem.

Dubbed "Segoe UI," the font is more humanistic and less computer-like than it's predecessor, Tahoma. Microsoft also relied on a decade of research from its Typography unit on making fonts easier to read and scan on screen.

More Windows Mobile 7 screenshots emerge with Zune UI

WMPoweruser has posted some more alleged screenshots of Windows Mobile 7. The screenshots Neowin sighted earlier showed the Today Screen and the Maps utility. The new screenshots shown below, give us a picture of Windows Mobile Marketplace, IM and Zune, possibly from the Windows Mobile 7 UI. Unlike the earlier screenshots which had a date of October 16, these screenshots reveal no such date details, so as to give away the time this UI was devised and tested. If these screenshots are from Windows Mobile 7, then the Zune UI confirms the recent rumor that Zune is indeed coming to Windows Mobile 7.

Thurrott: New UI coming for Windows 7?

Recently, there has been some rumors flying around that Windows 7 would have a completely new UI. Here is a quote from an article on Paul Thurrott's Super Site for Windows:During the development of Windows Server 2008, I was told by project manager Alex Hinrichs that Microsoft had completely changed the way it developed Windows. Thanks to the componentization of the underlying OS, it was no longer necessary to "fork" the Windows build tree so that different parts of the product team could develop their own parts of the OS in isolation.

Microsoft building new UI framework

Long Zheng: Not too long ago Microsoft described Windows Presentation Foundation as the UI platform for the next 20 years. Surprisingly work is beginning on an even newer Windows UI framework. My Windows Vista clock must be running slow.

Bearing in mind the arsenal of Windows UI frameworks that exists today - Windows Presentation Foundation, Silverlight, Windows Forms, Win32, Media Center Markup Language, Microsoft Foundation Classes and more from third parties; Microsoft has decided to build yet another one to enable new UI experiences in future versions of Windows. Here is the job advertisement...

Asus Glides in with Win Mobile über-UI

Asus has hopped onto the 'we can do a better Windows Mobile interface than Microsoft can' bandwagon set in motion by Palm but given a big push by HTC with its TouchFlo UI.

Windows Scenic: Windows 7s Ribbon-based UI platform

It looks like the much anticipated new user-interface platform for Windows 7 and Windows Live Wave 3 applications is being called “Windows Scenic”, if the recently available Windows Live Wave 3 Movie Maker and leaked screenshot of Windows 7’s Paint application is any indication. They are both built with one and the same UI framework.

Several months ago there were indications Microsoft was working on an Office 2007 Ribbon-inspired interface for Windows 7 which at the time sounded bizarre and is still today. How it is implemented in “Scenic” is literally stripping the Ribbon out of Office. In fact so literal Scenic’s DLLs include resources from Office 2007 Beta 2 and the existence of a “Ribbon menu” as noted below...

Driving testability from the UI down

Dustin Andrews: A products user interface is one of the most challenging areas to increase testability. Its also the place where our customers will be using the most. Its important to make your user interface code as testable as possible.

The metaphor of the UI is appealing to us subconsciously. Sometimes this tricks us into thinking in terms of the metaphor and not the code.

Take the example of the calculator. What you see on the screen isnt the same thing thats sitting on your desk. Its a hollow shell. Its Just a picture really. Disengage from your products metaphor from time to time to be able to test the UI more effectively.

Look for Ribbon in a Windows 7 application near you

Long Zheng: The people who are drafting the new user interface guidelines for Windows 7 have some pretty bold plans. They plan to build the Ribbon, Jewel and "other new UI concepts" natively into the Windows platform.

Ultimately, they want software developers big and small to avoid the Win32 UI framework which dates back all the way to Windows 95. Instead, use this new lightweight and high performance markup-based UI framework to build “rich, graphics and animated user interfaces”. The Ribbon and Jewel (button in the top left corner of Office 2007) will be a part of this new framework. It sounds very much like WPF, except native.
