29.10.2008Windows 7 box art leaks
Potential Windows 7 box art leaked earlier this week from Polish site Centrumxp. Originally many speculated that these images were fake but blogger
Long Zheng has unearthed Microsoft using the same logo on the box art, elsewhere. Microsoft has created a Windows Lounge site for internal employees
to join a Facebook group for information, training and marketing for Windows 7. The group uses the following image for its logo: Compared to the
box art that was leaked it's too similar. It appears as though this could be concept or final box art for the Windows 7 packaging. Microsoft
officials have said "off the record" that Windows 7 will RTM in the Summer and be available for the Fall.

It didn't take long after Google announced its entrance into the operating system wars that the first photos have leaked onto the net. What you
are able to see below are shots of the Chrome desktop with one application installed, Google Talk. It's not yet clear whether these screen shots
are 100% legit. The author cites that it took approximately ten minutes to install the OS on a Acer Extensa 4620Z laptop and it required only 1
restart. Approximate reboot cycle time from desktop to desktop took about 25 seconds and was described as "amazingly fast" but this was a stripped
down beta to show off to developers.

09.07.2009Microsoft removes another one of WGA's fangs
This morning Microsoft announced another noteworthy change to its flagship Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) program - an update to be rolled out later
this month to all Vista users that will display a WGA warning dialog box when it detects either of two common Vista activation cracks. In the same
announcement, they also for the first time showed screen shots of how WGA changes debuting in SP1 will take some of the bite out of a longstanding
Windows product activation rule as well.
Now-departed Microsoft marketing chief Michael Sievert announced last December that Service Pack 1
would drop Vista’s “reduced functionality mode” (the notorious “kill switch”) in favor of a series of notifications and
nag screens. WGA senior product manager Alex Kochis posted the details of today’s changes, with screen shots, on Microsoft’s Windows
Genuine Advantage blog today.

16.03.2006Windows 7 packaging officially revealed
Microsoft has finally confirmed that the Windows 7 box art, first leaked back in May, is in fact the genuine design and will be used when Windows 7
hits the shelves in October. In a post over at the Windows 7 Team Blog, Brandon LeBlanc reveals that, as with the new operating system, the packaging
has also been simplified since Windows Vista. Unlike the fairly complicated side opening three-step method required for the Vista box (obviously some
consumers found it so confusing that Microsoft had to make a "how-to" article) the Windows 7 box will be a simple and more traditional DVD-style
case. It also features less packaging materials to reduce environmental footprint.

Following the announcement of three nettops intended to rival the Asus Eee Box, MSI has unveiled a new product into its Wind range that takes a

Like virtually every other nettop in town, the MSI Wind Box will boast an Intel Atom N270 processor and either 1GB or 2GB of RAM under the hood.

13.03.2007Is the 'god box' finally real?
Jon Oltsik: The term "god box" has its own definition in the technology industry. For those unfamiliar with the phrase, a "god box" is a single
system packed with ridiculous amounts of functionality. Think of an all-in-one television, cable box, TiVo, and home entertainment speaker system and
you get the idea. One "god box" always replaces numerous more pedestrian systems.
In the past, it was not unusual for some new
company to come to me--an analyst--and spin its new proprietary "god box." But I always remained skeptical. Why? I assumed that a "god box" would
fall victim to either technology or economic limitations. That is to say, "god boxes" were always either underpowered or overpriced. Additionally,
you could usually get better software functionality from specialists; "god boxes" were more of a software aggregation than a quality play.
Times have changed. No, we aren't quite yet at a point where the industry can produce Scott McNealy's visionary, "big honkin' Web
switch," but we are getting closer. "God boxes" are more real than ever because of...

11.12.2007Asus Eee Box B203 gets Celeron power
Asus has slipped another new Eee box model into its lineup called the B203. While pricing is unknown at this point, the CPU Asus chose for the machine
could make it one of the least expensive models in the Eee Box line. The B203 runs on an Intel Celeron C220 processor that is priced lower than the
Intel Atom typically used in Eee Box machines. Despite the Celeron being cheaper than the Atom, it should provide somewhat higher performance.
Storage options include 80GB, 120GB, or 160GB hard drives. Other features include a quartet of USB ports, memory card reader, DVI out, Ethernet jack
and integrated WiFi. Asus says that the B203 only needs 20 watts of power.

16.12.2008Windows 7 Beta 1 has problems with XP Display Drivers (XDDM)
I've been enjoying Windows 7 so much over the past week, that I've been evangelizing it to all of my friends. One friend with a Dell Inspiron
710m decided to take the plunge. Windows 7 installation went well, but we can't find any compatible display drivers for the Intel 855gm graphics
card. The graphics card in question doesn't support Windows Vista or Window 7's new WDDM driver model, but Windows Vista shipped with XDDM
drivers for this card out of the box. I feel that Windows 7 should have all of the same in-box drivers as Vista, and it's a bummer that this one
is not included.
