How to Change Windows Vista Boot Screen

Some of you remember how it was possible to change the boot logo screen of Windows 95/98. I'm not sure why anyone would go into the trouble of actually doing it, but it seems that it is possible to do the same for Windows Vista.

At the Roots of Windows Blue Screen of Death

Unfortunately for Microsoft, one of the aspects of its proprietary operating system that has grown to become associated by default with the Windows brand is the Blue Screen of Death. You can choose from one to ten turkeys; the program also offers password protection.

Note that the screen saver shows the vendor's name on your desktop, and although this brash self-promotion can seem a bit annoying, it is tolerable--especially since the program is free, and because it's seasonal, you'll probably want it on your desktop for only a short time.

Boot Camp: the day after

Now that Apple's Boot Camp is in the wild, there's very little to be said about booting into alternate operating systems on the Mac, right? Wrong! Because, not surprisingly, no sooner did Apple take the wraps off its little 30th birthday suprise, than Mac owners (or non-Mac owners who could cajole friends into lending them their Macs for a spell) began to put the Apple boot manager through its paces.

Windows 7 695x boot screen revealed

Chris Holmes, Windows Enthusiast and blogger, has posted a short and somewhat blurry video of the new Windows 7 boot screen in action. The latest sign of changes for Windows 7 signals a departure from the Vista boot up screen. Microsoft kept the boot screen simple with Vista after asking BIOS makers, PC makers, and video card makers to remove product advertisement screens at system boot. Microsoft created a simple boot method which it claimed took 6 seconds off initial boot compared to the more graphical boot that it had originally planned with the Longhorn betas.

How To Warm Boot Windows XP/Vista

Unless you have to, it is many times advantageous to warm boot, or rather warm reboot, Windows. In a warm reboot, Windows restarts, but the computer doesnt, skipping the whole pre-Windows boot screen/BIOS/startup sequence. You an easily specify a warm boot in both Windows XP and Windows Vista. Just hold down SHIFT on your keyboard before clicking Restart in Vista, or before clicking OK in the restart dialog in XP. Enjoy the extra 20 seconds!

Technically, the use of the term warm boot is a bit misused here, but the small amount of time saved by not re-running the BIOS can be worth it.

ASRock "4 second" Instant Boot for Windows

Want a way to boot up your Windows Vista PC from a full shut down in a matter of seconds? ASRock have the answer!

The solution is technology that ASRock call Instant Boot. This is interesting technology because it leverages the S3 and S4 ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) features which normally enable the Sleep/Standby and Hibernation modes in Windows to cut boot times down to something like 4 seconds. By calling S3 and S4 at specific times during the startup and shutdown process, Instant Boot enables you to boot up to your Windows desktop in a few seconds seconds, even after a total shut down.

Intel Macs will Run Windows XP with Next OS X

More and more people are buying and loving Macs. To make this choice simply irresistible, Apple will include technology in the next major release of Mac OS X, Leopard, that lets you install and run the Windows XP operating system on your Mac. Called Boot Camp (for now), you can download a public beta today.

Boot Camp lets you install Windows XP without moving your Mac data, though you will need to bring your own copy to the table, as Apple Computer does not sell or support Microsoft Windows. Boot Camp will burn a CD of all the required drivers for Windows so you don't have to scrounge around the Internet looking for them.

How Vista screws dual-booting nirvana

Declan Kennedy at APC Magazine has written an interesting analysis looking at Microsoft's suspicious lack of advancement in OS boot technique.

Put simply, Vista will still overwrite the master boot record with no regard for any other boot loader that may be present.

But Kennedy also describes how, with the right boot loader configuration, you can setup a dual-boot system that allows you to switch between Windows and Linux without having to reboot either OS, using hibernation.

His observations open up interesting possibilities for Mac users too. Boot Camp would be considerably more useful if it didn't involve closing all applications and fully restarting the system each time. If it were just a case of sleeping one OS to switch to the other, it'd be the next best thing to perfect virtualisation. Will Apple implement this in time for Panther?..

Engineering the Windows 7 Boot Animation

Steven Sinofsky: As we connect through this blog and through all of those talking about Windows 7 it is clear that folks have a lot of passion around many topics. We learned early on about the passion around the boot/startup sequence and how important it was for that to go by quickly! At the same time, we know that it is really dull to watch a HDD light blink when resuming a machine from hibernate or powering up a machine. To improve this first connection with people, we set out to improve the boot sequencejazz it up if you will. It sounds pretty easy, but as we looked into solving this we found it is a pretty significant engineering challenge. Our goal was to have fun while having no impact on the boot performance of the system. To explain this engineering and describe the boot sequence, Karen Wong, a program manager on our Core User Experience feature team, authored this post.

Engineering Windows 7: Boot Performance

Michael Fortin: For Windows 7, we have a dedicated team focused on startup performance, but in reality the effort extends across the entire Windows division and beyond. Our many hardware and software partners are working closely with us and can rightly be considered an extension to the team.

Startup can be one of three experiences; boot, resume from sleep, or resume from hibernate. Although resume from sleep is the default, and often 2 to 5 seconds based on common hardware and standard software loads, this post is primarily about boot as that experience has been commented on frequently. For Windows 7, a top goal is to significantly increase the number of systems that experience very good boot times. In the lab, a very good system is one that boots in under 15 seconds.

Leopard's Boot Camp brings 'fast switching' between Mac OS X and Windows

Thanks to TUAW readers, tips are rolling in on all the tiny and not-so-tiny features that Mac OS X Leopard will be bringing in October. One feature that is definitely not-so-tiny is something I'll dub 'fast switching' between Mac OS X and your Boot Camp Windows installation.

While this isn't quite the built-in virtualization that some users were hoping for, it will minimize the startup, shutdown and boot times when switching between the two OSes. Detailed on http://www.apple.com/macosx/le opard/features/bootcamp.html>B oot Camp's new features page, Apple has hooked their safe sleep feature into Boot Camp to allow Mac OS X to save all your open applications and windows, and then boot over into Windows. Once you're done in Windows, you can boot back over to Mac OS X and pick up where you left off - with all your open applications and documents put right back where you left them.

This is a great idea and an interesting compromise between making it a little too easy to run Windows on your Mac, and it also keeps Apple from stepping on the toes of virtualization products from companies like Parallels and VMware.

Phoenix Instant Boot BIOS starts loading Windows in under a second

Phoenix is showing off a few interesting things at IDF, but the real standout is their new Instant Boot BIOS, a highly optimized UEFI implementation that can start loading an OS in just under a second. Combined with Windows 7's optimized startup procedure, that means you're looking at incredibly short boot times -- we saw a retrofitted Dell Adamo hit the Windows desktop in 20 seconds, while a Lenovo T400s with a fast SSD got there in under 10. It's pretty slick stuff, and it should be out soon -- check a video after the break...

Rivals challenge Microsoft browser settlement

Three rivals of Microsoft's Internet Explorer web browser are seeking last minute changes to a proposal, that would see new users of Windows presented with a ballot screen of the top five browsers. Rivals believe that the current ballot screen proposal still gives Internet Explorer an unfair advantage. After a complaint from the makers of the Opera web browser, the European Commission decided in January that Microsoft's inclusion of Internet Explorer in Windows constituted an abuse of their dominant market position. In October, the Redmond-based company proposed a so-called browser "ballot screen", which would display a list of the top five browsers to consumers when they boot a new computer for the first time.

Vista tips and tricks: changing boot options on the fly

There are a number of boot options that can be used in Vista and Windows Server 2008 that can be a pain to modify (or not possible if you are in a bugcheck loop), that can be done on the fly at boot time. These options are invaluable for diagnosing some problems you may experience on the system, and modifying them in the OS may involve figuring out the bcdedit syntax, the right BCD store to modify, or rebuilding and burning a new install DVD (if the problem is happening during install from media).

Some example boot switches you might want to use are...

The day the Zunes stood still

Yesterday morning, thousands of previously happy Microsoft Zune 30 owners woke up to a interesting situation. Their Zunes were dead in the water. As Neowin reported yesterday, "At exactly 2am CDT (12am PDT), the docked Zune made the 'unplugged from USB port' bong-noise and went to the boot-up screen with the 100% loading bar...and froze." This situation was similar if not identical for every other Zune 30 owner who had their devices turned on. Those who didn't received the New Years Eve surprise when their turned on their device to be greeted by the Zune boot screen, and nothing else. Microsoft acted quickly, undoubtedly after being bombarded with angry phone calls, emails, Tweets and message board posts.
