AMD Unleashes Black Edition Phenom for Overclockers

Advanced Micro Devices on Wednesday announced its new AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition microprocessor designed specifically for gamers and overclockers and which performance can be customized using AMDs OverDrive utility directly from Microsoft Windows operating system.

Quad-core AMD Phenom processor 9600 Black Edition will operate at 2.30GHz clock-speed, 2MB shared L3 cache and 512KB dedicated L2 cache per core and will have support for dual-channel PC2-8500 (DDR2 1066MHz), just like the typical AMD Phenom 9600 chip. However, the Black Edition processor has unlocked clock multiplier, which allows enthusiasts to clock the new chip higher than 2.30GHz without any issues that are associated with overclocking.

AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition Released

Aimed at gamers and overclockers, Advanced Micro Devices has released their new AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition quad-core processor with Clock Multiplier Control and AMD OverDrive, the industry’s most powerful Windows-based performance tuning utility, for tunable performance. The processor will operate at a 2.3GHz frequency, 2MB shared L3 cache and 512KB dedicated L2 cache per core and 128KB L1 cache per core. Using 65-nanometer silicon-on-insulator technology, the CPU will be identical to its non-Black Edition counterpart (integrated DDR2 memory controller and so on) except for the unlocked clock multiplier, which allows enthusiasts to easily clock the new chip. AMD notes the processor is priced the same as the recently launched AMD Phenom™ 9600 quad-core pocessor, or $283 in 1000 unit quantities.

AMD Launches "Black Edition" Athlon 64 X2 5000+

To complement the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition, AMD has silently launched its Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition. All technical aspects of the processor are identical to its non-Black Edition counterpart; the only new feature is an unlocked multiplier - allowing overclockers to increase the frequency of the processor without the need to adjust the HyperTransport clock. In other words, the chipmaker is hoping the processor's overclocking performance will make it a worthy new product. According sources familiar with the new CPUs launch schedule, retail availability of the processors should come later this month, but as of right now no major supplier is selling the new processor. AMD guidance sets the MSRP of the Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition at $136 in quantities of 1,000.

AMD launches second "Black Edition" processor

Following the Athlon 64 X2 6400+ Black Edition flagship processor, AMD has introduced a 5000+ mainstream version.

Compared to the regular 5000+ chip, the Black Edition comes with the same 2.6 GHz clock speed, 1 MB L2 cache and 65 watt power envelope, but includes a customizable clock multiplier that allows users to adjust the performance of the processor.

The processor is aims to attract the eyeballs of mainstream end-users, according to AMD.

The added feature comes at a slight premium: The 5000+ Black Edition has a tray price of $136, while the regular version lists for $125. Actual retail pricing of the new Black Edition CPU processor should follow recent AMD processor pricing trends and should be near the tray price: The 6400+, with a tray price of $251, hit the market for an average of $272 in the week of August 21, but recently fell to an average of $249, according to Pricegrabber.com. The regular 5000+ processor currently sells for an average of $113.

AMD Phenom 9600 Black Edition Overclocking

With a little help from our friends overseas, we were able to get our hands on one of the first retail Phenom 9600 Black Edition Processors available. For those of you that are not in the know, the śBlack Editionť processors for AMD have unlocked CPU clock multipliers. Our Phenom 9600 runs at a stock clock of 2.3GHz which is 11.5X200MHz. Being "unlocked," we can change that 11.5 to almost any number we want. We heavily petitioned AMD to deliver a Black Edition Phenom CPU to enthusiasts because we think this is the only way to somewhat satiate brand loyal fans, considering the Phenoms somewhat disappointing performance out of the gate.

Force3D Radeon HD 4870 Black Edition review

When we compared the Radeon HD 4870 and GeForce GTX 260 graphics cards a couple of months ago, the Radeon came up on top with one major exception, heat generation.

While the 80C+ load temperatures of the the Radeon HD 4870 were a little concerning, it was the 70C+ idle temps that had us really worried. This meant that even when sitting at the Windows desktop the Radeon HD 4870 was cranking out more than 70 degrees of heat, much of which escaped into the case.

And finally we have a Radeon HD 4870 card that has dealt with this issue. The new Force3D Radeon HD 4870 Black Edition slightly overclocks the standard core and memory clocks, but most importantly replaces the reference cooler with one of the best VGA air coolers money can buy, the Arctic-Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo.

AMD's fastest CPU reviewed: Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition

Without any challenge to present at the Core i7 performance level, AMD is trying to pressure Intel in the value segment before their Core i5 CPUs make it to market. The new Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition that we are reviewing today operates at 3.4GHz with a 17x clock multiplier (200Mhz faster than the 955). This new Phenom is based on the same "Deneb" architecture and therefore features 6MB L3 cache, with each core receiving its own dedicated 512KB of L2 cache (2MB total L2 cache). The Phenom II X4 965 also continues AM3 support and remains backwards compatible with AM2/AM2+ motherboards, meaning that users can pick between DDR2 or DDR3 memory.

AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition review

Although the release of the AMD Phenom processor series took place back in November of last year, roughly four months ago now, the highly touted quad-core processor has received limited action so far in the computer world and a lot of negative press coverage for reasons we have documented well enough during all this time.

In our hands-on experience with the first wave of Phenoms, we didn't think the situation was as dire as many made it out to be. But regardless, it was a combination of a poor product launch with corporate financial trouble that raised the company to the spotlight.

In terms of performance, AMD has stated that the new B3 processors will be no faster than the original Phenom X4 CPUs without the TLB erratum fix enabled on a clock-for-clock basis. Therefore the Phenom X4 9600 and the new Phenom X4 9650, for example, should be no different in terms of performance. Just as well that should mean that today’s flagship Phenom, the X4 9850, should sit somewhere between the Phenom 9700 and 9900 processors that we reviewed earlier this year.

It will be interesting to see how the 9850 stacks up against the rest of the Phenom family and of course, Intel's Q6600.

Windows 7 Starter Edition details confirmed

As was reported here on Neowin, there was speculation that Microsoft were planning to remove the application limit on Windows 7 Starter Edition. According to The Windows Blog, Microsoft have confirmed that the "3 applications at a time" limit that hobbled earlier versions of the Starter Edition has been removed for Windows 7. Now the only effective limit on the number of programs you can run concurrently is set by the amount of your memory. Windows 7 Starter Edition will have other limits, however, in order to differentiate it from other versions of the OS. "Windows 7 Starter does not include: * Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the "Windows Basic" or other opaque themes.

Apple to offer discounts of up to 15% on Black Friday

While Apple is remaining tight-lipped on what we can expect from their stores on Black Friday, one analyst is predicting consumers will see discounts of up to 15%. According to Kaufman Bros analyst Shaw Wu, Apple's Black Friday sale will be more aggressive than usual. Apple products are traditionally more expensive than their non-apple counterparts and price reductions are not commonplace for the tech giant. In past years, Apple has offered Black Friday discounts between 5 and 10%. If Wu's prediction is correct, consumers will be seeing a reduced price on the iPod, iMac, and MacBooks. However, Wu is skeptical as to whether or not the iPhone will be subject to the Black Friday discounts.

Black Maximized Windows Borders Fixed

The Windows team posted an exciting post on their new Shell:Revealed blog, giving people who wanted the black maximized window borders to disappear a rest, because the problem is apparently fixed starting from today's builds. Due to the very short time limit until the upcoming RC2 build, we're still unsure whether the final version distributed to testers will feature that change.

The "fix", although quite welcome, isn't really what people asked for: "In the end, we decided that we like the black and think it is the right thing to do, but we want to respect the user's color choice for users who bother to make a change. So - starting in today's build, we have significantly backed off the amount of black that is mixed in with the user's color for maximized windows". Basically, they are offering people the choice to customize the color, although there will still be a black shade to it. The fix isn't apparently very noticeable on the default color, though it is most useful on strong colors.
