When Microsoft's Vista arrives on machines, it looks like it may need a trusted platform model (TPM) chip to be present on the system.

A Warning About the Windows Vista SP1 Beta Standalone Installer
Robert McLaws: By now you're aware that the Windows Vista SP1 Beta has been released to beta testers for a thorough shakedown. I just wanted to give
anyone who still has UAC on a bit of warning. If you right-click the installer and select "Run as Administrator" first, then it won't take nearly
as long to extract the files. Otherwise, it takes almost 15 minutes just to fail thrugh the copy the first time, until you finally get the UAC
dialog.
Also, be aware that, while it says it can take up to 30 minutes, it's closer to an hour, and it will restart 3 or 4
times in the process (checking the box at the beginning is definitely advised). I've been running SP1 on my main machine for a few hours now, and it
seems to be pretty stable. I'll have more on this later.

25.09.2007Warning: Windows 7 beta could corrupt your MP3s
Several reports from users using the latest leaked build of Windows 7 indicate a potential data corruption issue using Microsoft's Windows Media
Player 12. Windows 7 beta 1 build 7000 leaked over the Christmas holidays and a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that there is a bug which
affects the leaked build. Approximately 2-3 seconds will get shaved off the beginning of MP3s if you have set your Windows Media Player 12 settings to
retrieve information from the internet and update files. The default configuration for WMP12 sets this if you use the "express" option during setup.
"The problem only happens when you edit metadata on a certain class of MP3 file (a file with a header larger than 16KB).

03.11.2006Microsoft quietly shuts down Windows Live Help Community too
Microsoft has silently removed the
Windows Live Help Community service and the link
now redirects to Windows Live Help. This is one of the many Windows Live services being dropped in recent times. And Like Windows Live for TV, Help
Community never made it out of beta.
For those of you who don't remember, Microsoft released Windows Live Help Community back in
December 2006, providing another channel for users to get help for their Windows Live services. However, throughout the lifetime of the service, only
three services ever utilized Help Community - that is Windows Live Admin Center, Windows Live Call for Free, and Help Community itself.
As
noted back then on LiveSide, there seems to be too many help and feedback channels for Windows Live services, including:
Windows Live Account -
Help Central
Windows Live Account - Feedback
Live Search QnA
Windows Live Help Community (now removed)
Windows Live Message
Boards
Windows Live public newsgroups
Seems like Microsoft is finally getting their hands on to clean up the mess they've
created with Windows Live and Live Search.

08.01.2009Microsoft shuts down popular Windows patching package, AutoPatcher
Microsoft Legal defies logic today by
forcibly removing a free and trustworthy
software package which makes updating Windows more convenient and accessible.
AutoPatcher, for those who dont know, was an impressive
Windows community project that combined publically available
Windows hotfixes and security updates each month to form a single package that could either be installed in a batch or burned on to an CD. To those
who regularly format their computers or fix other peoples computers (for which I share you pain), AutoPatcher not only saves bandwidth but precious
time downloading each individual update from
Windows Update.
It is not hard to imagine AutoPatcher violated some clause in some terms of service
somewhere, but why Microsoft would act on it, and act on it now is unbelievable. If AutoPatcher could be as śmaliciousť as Microsoft suggests, then
why havent they acted on it sooner?

29.08.2007Microsoft warns of IE8 lock-in with XP SP3
Microsoft yesterday warned users of Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) that they won't be able to uninstall either the service pack or Internet
Explorer 8 (IE8) under some circumstances. The warning was reminiscent of one Microsoft made in May, when Windows XP SP3 had just been made available
for downloading. At the time, the company told users they wouldn't be able to downgrade from IE7 to the older IE6 browser without uninstalling the
service pack.
In a post to the IE blog today, Jane Maliouta, a Microsoft program manager, spelled out the newest situation, which affects
users who downloaded and installed IE8 Beta 1 prior to updating Windows XP to SP3. If those users then upgrade IE8 to Beta 2 , which Microsoft
unveiled today, they will be stuck with both IE8 and Windows XP SP3. A warning dialog will appear to alert users. "If you chose to continue,
Windows XP SP3 and IE8 Beta2 will become permanent," Maliouta said. "You will still be able to upgrade to later IE8 builds as they become available,
but you won't be able to uninstall them."

immediate upcoming MSDN Developer Conference is on January 13th, which is next Tuesday! At the worst, expect a public beta release next week as the

07.01.2009Microsoft shuts down book search
Microsoft plans to shutter its book-scanning operation next week, the company said on Friday.
It will shut down the
Live Search Books and
Live Search Academic Web sites and
stop scanning library and copyright books, Satya Nadella, senior vice president of search, portal and advertising
for
Microsoft, wrote in a
blog post .
Microsoft appears to have decided that it doesn't want to be in the business of creating digital content, instead hoping that
others will take on that task. The company will give its scanning equipment to its library and digitization partners and encourage
them to continue to scan books. "Based on our experience, we foresee that the best way for a search engine to make book content
available will be by crawling content repositories created by book publishers and libraries," Nadella wrote.
