Neowin Reviews: Internet Explorer 7 Beta 1

The internet has come a long way since Microsoft licensed SpyGlass technology to use as the basis of its first browser in 1995. Before the dawn of Firefox, Opera, Safari and the rest of the alternatives, users were stuck with two choices. Use the browser that came bundled with their operating system, or download Netscape and hope for the best.

Carbonite caught red-handed posting fake product reviews

It was just 10 days ago we had the news of Belkin paying people to post fake reviews and the comments of anonymous Belkin employees confirming those fake reviews, we now have Carbonite - an online backup service provider setting a similar example. The Daily Background highlights the dirty practices of yet another tech company posting positive reviews of their own products. Bruce, an annoyed customer who wanted to write reviews in Amazon.com regarding his experiences with Carbonite, found out that the high level employees of carbonite gave positive product reviews disguised as normal users.

Belkin paying people to post fake reviews

Corporations live and die off consumer reviews and when your product isn't getting the remarks you had hoped for what do you do? Well if you are Belkin apparently you pay people, 65 cents for a 5 out of 5 review on Amazon. If 65 cents sounds like a good deal to you then it may be in your best interest to hit up Michael Bayard, a Business Development Representative at Belkin. He posted on Amazon's Mechanical Turk site requesting users to submit their own reviews for Belkin products with 5 stars while down ranking negative reviews. He was hoping to get some good reviews out of the deal but ended up with a PR disaster on his hands.

CNET Reviews Windows Vista SP1

A little more than one year after its release, Windows Vista will receive its first service pack update in March. Microsoft says the pack will offer better compatibility with third-party hardware, increased reliability, tighter security, and better performance. But unlike the last Windows Service Pack release, Windows XP SP2--which offered users a new Windows Firewall, an improved Automatic Updates feature, and a pop-up ad blocker for Internet Explorer--Windows Vista SP1 is largely a code update, devoid of new eye candy, and very light on "must-have" features for home users. Most of the features touted by Microsoft are for the Business, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions of the operating system. Our advice: Be patient, and don't download it once it becomes available. Wait until Windows Vista SP1 is offered to your PC via Microsoft's Automatic Updates service.

Windows-based all-in-ones finally give Apple some competition

2008 will go down as the year Windows PC makers finally gave Apple and it's pioneering iMac a serious challenge. Yes, every major vendor had an all-in-one PC prior to this year, but few distinguished themselves from the iMac in either price or functionality. Sony's JS190J and its sub-$1,000 starting price gave cost-conscious shoppers a serious alternative the lower-end iMacs earlier this year. And we've just finished our reviews of all three major large screen Windows all-in-ones, which finally have an answer for Apple's 24-inch iMac.
