Reliability Vs. Security

James Whittaker: At the International Symposium on Software Reliability Engineering (ISSRE 07, Trollhattan Sweden) one would think that the security versus reliability debate would be very one-sided. Windows Server reliability crashes in 2007

The downtime experienced by Windows Server 2003 increased 25 percent to nine hours per server per year, while the reliability of mainstream server-based Linux distributions improved significantly, according to a Yankee Group survey.

The research firm's survey also noted a significant rise in enterprise interest in Ubuntu, previously known primarily as a desktop operating system.

The 2007-2008 Global Server Operating System Reliability Survey presents a substantially different picture compared to the results of the last such survey in 2006, in which Windows administrators reported less downtime than their counterparts who used Linux -- a result that stirred up controversy at the time.

Microsoft Launching a Windows Vista TFT Monitor

Widescreen 22in display to make best use of the operating system's graphics.

Microsoft is launching a computer monitor that it claims will best show the new functions and features in its Vista operating system.

The software giant is working with Samsung to build a high-resolution, 22in widescreen Vista Monitor, which is due for release around the same time as the operating system.

Vista has been designed to look best when using a widescreen display, and Microsoft wants to ensure that as far as possible users take advantage of this. By producing a Microsoft-badged monitor, it can promote widescreen Vista use to those who upgrade from Windows XP or buy a new PC running the operating system.

Samsung confirmed it is working with Microsoft to build the monitors. Ami Randhawa, monitor product manager at Samsung, said: ?The demand is being driven by Vista. It will be branded Microsoft, but built by Samsung.?

Microsoft was contacted, but said: ?Microsoft does not comment on rumour and speculation.?

Network Monitor 3 One Click Capture Tool - BETA Available

Wish you could get a network capture from a computer with no capture software installed? Wish you could have a network traffic "flight recorder" on a USB key? Here's your answer!"

The motivation behind creating this tool was to provide an extremely simple way to get a trace from an end user. And the name says it all, though maybe a small bit of false advertisement as it may take a bit more than just one click :). Once you have it downloaded to your machine, you can launch the executable and it will lead you through some simple dialogs that install the tool and start a trace. Once the trace is complete, which means it was manually stopped by the user or the default time of 2 hours have passed, a window will be opened to the location for the capture, called OneClick.cap.

<...>

Obtaining the Tool

At this point we are beta testing the tool. So the only means of getting it is on the Network Monitor project on http://connect.microsoft.com. When you join the project, you will see both the Auto-run and Extract Only packages in the download section. Once we release the tool, we will make it available on the Microsoft Download site as this is more convenient, which is our goal for this tool.

Windows 7, how low can it go?

It is well known that Windows 7 is a huge step up from Vista as well as XP. It allows users with computers that could barely run Vista to run 7 much faster and more efficiently. It is relatively safe to say, that Windows 7 will be the 1st version of Windows, that does not constantly remind you that you need to upgrade your computer. Since the 1st beta was released a few months ago, I have done around 25-30 installs of Windows 7. On every type of system, from a 3 Ghz quad core system, to a 1.3 Ghz single core laptop. On every single one of those installs Windows 7 greatly improved performance and reliability.
