Windows Live Essentials Beta Released

Microsoft finally released today a beta version of its Windows Live Essentials service to all beta-testers that subscribed to the beta program.

The point of Windows Live Essentials is quite simple: provide a simple way for users to use the most important Windows Live Services: Windows Live Messenger, Windows Live Mail desktop, Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Spaces and Windows Live Dashboard being the included products as of yet.

The website is only available to people using Internet Explorer 6, so nothing has changed yet on compatibility since the preview, though it is said that each release will bring improvements to operating system, language and web browser support.

Microsoft sends out Windows Live Messenger 9.0 beta invites

No sooner has the Windows Live Wave 2 suite been released than the first Wave 3 beta begins - Windows Live Messenger v9. Unlike the betas that have just finished, the Messenger v9 beta is being run from Microsoft Connect as a private beta, meaning that, for the moment at least, unless you receive an invite, you won't be able to participate.

For the moment it looks like most previous Windows Live testers are getting invites, so stay tuned to your inbox. With such a popular beta like this, you better sign up quick.

So what's new? While the goodies aren't yet available, we've heard about Multiple Points Of Presence (MPOP) support, which allows you to signin from multiple devices, ie be online at two places at once.

Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta program frustrates testers

The first Windows Live Messenger 9.0 Beta build was released in November 2007. The release brought the ability to sign into Messenger from up to four computers at once, the ability to choose customized sounds for your sign-in and for your contacts, URLs in Personal Status Messages, and Animated Display Pictures. However, features requested across the many Messenger programs such as Tabbed Conversations and the ability to decline a group conversation invite were nowhere to be seen.

Office 2010: No public beta for now

Neowin already reported that Office 2010 Beta 1 due in early July will not be available for public testing. Now Microsoft has confirmed that it will indeed not release a public beta of Office 2010 for testing, to the general public and will limit the Technical Preview to a group of thousands of invite-only users starting in the third quarter of 2009. The second beta is due in early November and it is not clear whether Microsoft will open it to the general public. "The technology preview, as Microsoft will call the beta program, will involve 'thousands of users'. At this point there is no plan. (to offer the beta to the general public) ".

Get An Invite To Any Startup's Private Beta

One of the most frustrating things for early adopters like ourselves to deal with is the private, limited invitation beta. The startups seed a few invitations to their friends, and each new account has 3 or so invitations that can be given away. If you know the founders or one of the very early users, you can get in quickly. But if you dont, you often have to wait a long time to see a new product.

Startups love this, of course. They've created scarcity around a virtual good and that creates buzz. The most successful products can count on invitations being sold on eBay - something we saw with Gmail in 2004 and more recently with Pownce.

A month or so ago we had the idea to create an email based product that linked people with early invites to beta services to people without invites. If done correctly and in an organized way, a viral effect can take root and just about everyone who wants an invite can get one quickly. We started building the product. But today we found a service that does exactly what we were thinking of building - InviteShare< /a>.

PINNED: Microsoft Updates Live Messenger Beta

Microsoft on Tuesday began rolling out a new Windows Live Messenger build to beta testers, streamlining the client's interface and adding a number of new features such as integration with Windows Live Contacts. The release, numbered 8.0.566, also supports colorization of the entire Messenger window.

For now, Live Messenger remains a private beta test, but Microsoft is encouraging users to invite as many people as possible, and the company is reportedly accepting new applications within 24 hours through ideas.live.com. Developers aren't offering a final release date, but say it will occur later this year.

Windows Live OneCare 2.5 beta ending, perpetual beta begins.

According to sources, following the official release of the final version of Windows Live OneCare 2.5, Microsoft sent out a flurry of e-mails to its testers. First off, the software giant reminded its testers that the 2.5 Beta will expire on July 31, 2008, after which OneCare will no longer keep itself up to date (both virus definitions and the actual software). Testers are urged to uninstall the beta and buy a full subscription, which is offered to them at a discounted $24.95 a year for up to three PCs, until July 31, 2008.

With the beta wrapping up, Microsoft quickly sent out another e-mail to certain testers asking if they wanted to continue to test new versions of the software. If the answer was yes, Microsoft responded with a confirmation and then the next day, e-mailed that tester the details of the Windows Live OneCare Perpetual Beta program, an invite-only group. Version 2.5 was all about under-the-hood improvements but based on what my source tells me about the Perpetual Beta, it seems that Microsoft is now satisfied with the program's performance and is focusing on new features and functionality.

Windows Live Messenger - Why so many invites?

Have you been getting a lot of invites for WLM recently? This is due to the fact that Microsoft has recently been updating their service system. They have been giving out a large amount of invites so they can test whether the new system can handle the 180 million+ users on MSN Messenger.

Microsoft recently hit their first target number, so they decided to give out more invites so they can hit their next target number. Giving out more invites makes sure that more people will join the beta, and will also help Microsoft test their servers for stability.

On that note, there are still many people who want to join the WLM Beta. Microsoft has opened up its WLM service to anyone who wants to join at the Windows Live Ideas Homepage. However, there is a catch. Once you sign up for the beta by scrolling down, and clicking "sign up", you won't be able to automatically be able to use WLM, but be on the list for an invite on Microsoft's next round of invites.

The exact date of the next release is still unknown, but Microsoft promises us to give out multiple releases this year.

Microsoft MyPhone service coming to invite-only beta soon, website launched

Today, the new Microsoft service, "My Phone" launched it's official website.

On My Phone's website, it gives us some information about what My Phone is really about. This service basically can backup and restore your Windows Mobile phone to a secure website. That's not all it does though; it also can gives you a web account that lets you view and modify calendar appointments along with contacts. Sharing photos is made easier using the online account too, by letting you take saved pictures from your phone and downloading them to your computer and/or emailing them to your friends and family.

This service is free, and will work with any Windows Mobile 6+ operating system. Microsoft gives you 200 MB of data in your account to use towards phone synchronizations.

Another feature of this application lets you restore all of your data to a new phone, should your old phone get lost or stolen. Simply use the same Windows Live ID to sign in with the application, and all of your data will restore once you hit the sync button.

This has not been released yet, and is expected to be released to select beta testers in an invite-only beta test at the Mobile World Congress.

Microsoft backtracks, says Office 2010 beta will be public

Microsoft Corp. today promised that it would provide at least one public beta to Office 2010, saying that its assertion to the contrary yesterday was "the wrong impression."

"Although we are not disclosing a date for the public beta, there definitely will be one," a company spokesman said this morning. "This development cycle for Office is no different than years past; technical preview is usually invite-only, but still goes out to hundreds of thousands of people, and there is a public beta cycle where millions can download and try Office."

'Albany': New Microsoft 'home office' in the works?

Microsoft has begun inviting selected testers to be part of a beta of a new, consumer-focused Office-family product, codenamed "Albany."

The beta invitation for Albany is cryptic, according to testers who received the invite and asked not to be named. Albany will be aimed at home PC users, not business customers, and will include both a software and a services component. The individuals whove been invited into the private, limited beta so far are those whove previously beta-tested Office releases.
