This is the first CTP since Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 was released in April. Microsoft officials say 200,000 copies of Beta 3 have been downloaded. With the new CTP, Internet Information Server (IIS) 7.0 is now an installation option under the Server Core feature of the server. ..

Windows Server 2008: Need to Know

After many months of waiting, Microsoft finally released the Beta 3 version of Windows Server 2008 (previously codenamed Longhorn), a major milestone pre-release version of the next version of Windows Server. (More recently, a CTP, or Community Technical Preview, version was distributed to beta testers in June 2008.) Windows Server 2008 has evolved quite a bit over time, and though the project hasn't suffered from the many feature drops and problems that dogged Windows Vista, there are certainly a few surprises in Beta 3 and the June CTP. Here's what you need to know about Windows Server 2008.

Windows Server 2008 will be a major Windows Server release with dramatically improved functionality when compared to its predecessors. Enhanced scripting and task automation via the new Windows PowerShell--a surprise addition to Beta 3, given that PowerShell was originally not going to ship as part of this product--and improved roles-based installation and management capabilities will give administrators more control than ever, Microsoft says. Indeed, the roles-based installation and management features now extend to Server Core, a new lightweight and safer version of the server.

Also, the currently rather buggy "location feature" for Personal Status Messages will be removed in the new build for further internal finetuning.

Windows Live Messenger 8.1 is currently in Managed Beta-phase.

Microsoft: Windows XP to Windows 7 upgrade possible

Microsoft has confirmed that customers can purchase upgrade media and an upgrade license at a discounted price to move from Windows XP to Windows 7. However, customers need to do a clean installation of Windows 7. The pricing details of XP upgrade licenses are not yet known. An operating system upgrade offers users the option of choosing between in-place upgrades, with installed applications & data in-place in the machine and a fresh installation which overwrites the hard drive's contents. By eliminating in-place upgrades, users can have a reliable installation after backing up all their data and applications.

vLite v1.1.5 Beta

Windows Vista from Microsoft takes a lot of resources, we all know that. So here is the tool for easy removal of unwanted components and bootable ISO creation in order to make Vista run faster and to your liking. This tool doesn't use any kind of hacking, all files and registry entries are in their original form and protected as they would be if you install the full version only without the components you select for the removal.

It configures the installation directly, before the installation, meaning you'll have to remake the ISO and reinstall it. This method is much cleaner, not to mention easier and more logical than doing it after installation on every reinstall.

Windows 7 Beta 1 has problems with XP Display Drivers (XDDM)

I've been enjoying Windows 7 so much over the past week, that I've been evangelizing it to all of my friends. One friend with a Dell Inspiron 710m decided to take the plunge. Windows 7 installation went well, but we can't find any compatible display drivers for the Intel 855gm graphics card. The graphics card in question doesn't support Windows Vista or Window 7's new WDDM driver model, but Windows Vista shipped with XDDM drivers for this card out of the box. I feel that Windows 7 should have all of the same in-box drivers as Vista, and it's a bummer that this one is not included.
