8.6.2006Warning: Windows 7 beta could corrupt your MP3s
Several reports from users using the latest leaked build of Windows 7 indicate a potential data corruption issue using Microsoft's Windows Media
Player 12. Windows 7 beta 1 build 7000 leaked over the Christmas holidays and a Microsoft spokesperson has confirmed that there is a bug which
affects the leaked build. Approximately 2-3 seconds will get shaved off the beginning of MP3s if you have set your Windows Media Player 12 settings to
retrieve information from the internet and update files. The default configuration for WMP12 sets this if you use the "express" option during setup.
"The problem only happens when you edit metadata on a certain class of MP3 file (a file with a header larger than 16KB).

04.12.2008Windows Vista Build 5219 to be
released at MS PDC
Microsoft will tomorrow
release a refreshed build of
Windows Vista at it's
Professional Developer's
Conference.
Thi
s build is 5219.
No. It is not
Beta 2. No. It is not Beta 1.
Yes. It is newer than Beta
1. It is a pre-beta-2 build.
Screenshots leaked
onto the internet earlier
today have led people to
erroneously claim that the
5219 build compiled on 050824
(24 August, 2005) is the build
that will be released at
PDC.
This is
untrue. Contrary to popular
belief, every new build
generated is not necessarily
automatically incremented by
1. If this were true, the
correct 5219 build (more on
that below) would have been
one compiled before 050824.
Thus the 5219 050824 build
would not exist. We have
confirmed that the 0824 build
is a legitimate build which
was issued to OEM partners for
testing. Did you leak these
screenshots IBM as you did the
screenshots of the 5203 build?
Build 5219
compiled on 050830 (30 August
2005) is the one that will be
released at PDC.
How is that
possible? Simple. Microsoft
compiled mutiple builds of
5219 over the period of at
least a week before finally
declaring 050830 as the final
build for
5219.
Among the
changes from 0824 to 0830 is
the fact that the sidebar
visible in 0824 has been
removed in the 0830 build.

14.01.2008Rhapsody Opens Fire Against ITunes With DRM-free MP3s
Rhapsody will sell MP3s in a new digital download store launched Monday for U.S. consumers, an offering that will pose fresh competition to
Apple's highly successful iTunes Music Store. The songs will not have DRM (Digital Rights Management) technology, which puts restrictions on how
music can be transferred between devices and PCs, and will be compatible with Apple's iPod line.
Music will come from most of the major
record labels, which have increasingly moved to offer tracks without DRM in order to boost the attractiveness of buying music online. Rhapsody, which
is owned by RealNetworks, will match Apple's pricing: US$.99 per song, or $9.99 per album.

30.06.2008Windows 7 Beta 1 in January
At PDC 2008, Steven Sinofsky announced a general availability date of Windows 7 to be sometime "early next year". This appears to be true according
to a Microsoft Insider, who has 'guestimated' the official date to be January 13.
Ed Bott from ZDNet predicts that a demo of Beta 1
will be shown at CES. Ballmer will be giving the pre-CES keynote on January 7, and he has no doubt in his mind that Win7 will be unveiled during that
time slot (traditionally given by Bill Gates).
It only makes sense that a public release comes soon after the demo, so if Ed's
predictions are correct, the release date of January 13 makes perfect sense.
Keep your eye on the news throughout the month. We're sure
to hear some more on the topic very soon!

04.05.2007Windows 7 Beta - When will it arrive?
Still a few hours away for CES, it is known that Microsoft is going unveil the Windows 7 Beta at CES. But it is still unsure when would users be able

information available from this Microsoft blog: Attend an upcoming MSDN Developer Conference and you will receive a Windows 7 Beta 1 DVD - and that
immediate upcoming MSDN Developer Conference is on January 13th, which is next Tuesday! At the worst, expect a public beta release next week as the
private beta testers would get priority even if its released earlier.

23.12.2006Worm Transcodes MP3s To Infect PCs
Kaspersky Labs has discovered
malware that inserts links to malicious Web pages within ASF media files, posing a danger to Windows users who download music
files from P2P networks. Infected files launch IE and load a page that asks the user to download a codec. The download, a Trojan horse, installs a
proxy program to route other traffic through the PC. The malware also has worm-like qualities, according to Secure Computing. It searches for MP3s,
transcodes them to WMA format, wraps them in an ASF container, and adds links to further copies of the malware, all without modifying the .MP3
extension.
