BT handed 100,000 file-sharer's IP addresses from BPI

The BPI have accused BT of not doing enough to prevent music piracy, after handing them 100,000 IP addresses of users allegedly caught sharing copyrighted files, according to an article by TorrentFreak posted yesterday. BT said it could cost ISPs £365m a year to take action against piracy, although the chief executive of the BPI, Geoff Taylor, claims that BT's figures are exaggerated. The BPI said it was "shameful" that BT had nothing about the 100,000 IP addresses it gave them, however chief of BT's consumer division, John Petter, said that taking such action could cost £365m a year, a whole £165m more than what the BPI claims the music industry will lose this year, due to piracy.

BT unveils "Blackberry for consumers"

BT is trying to introduce consumers to the delights of Blackberry-style mobile email and web access.

Dubbed BT Total Broadband Anywhere, the service provides the company's broadband customers with a "free" HTC Windows Mobile smartphone to take outside of the home.

The smartphone will hook up to any BT Wi-Fi hotspot - including 80,000 BT FON hotspots - to make calls, download emails or surf the web. When outside of a hotspot zone, the smartphone reverts to dawdling GPRS on the Vodafone network.

BT is attempting to play-up the simplicity of the device, claiming that it is simple for users to synchronise their BT email, VoIP telephone service and calendar. "This is not a niche play," Warren Buckley, BT's group director of mobile and convergence told PC Pro at this afternoon's launch event. "Having email and calendar access is not something consumers are used to. In testing, that was something consumers were very attracted to."

BT and Virgin Media to press ahead with Phorm

Stock prices of Phorm, a controversial targeted advertising company, rose as much as 40% in trading yesterday. Phorm deliver targeted advertising based on user browsing habits by using deep packet inspection. The method has been widely accepted as controversial and has involved the UK police and UK Government. BT has been trialing the system for some time with the latest 4 week trial concluding recently. The Phorm system allows BT to track and monitor every website that a user visits. BT puts this information into a database and is then able to insert its own advertising onto web pages that is targeted specific to those users.

O2 adds BT Openzone to iPhone access list

O2 has announced a deal with BT allowing iPhone customers to access the internet for free through BT Openzone premier Wi-Fi hotspots from 11 July. The launch of the partnership coincides with the release of the new iPhone 3G, but will be available to all iPhone customers.

BT Openzone has around 3,000 hotspots across the UK, including 13 BT wireless city centres and locations such as coffee shops, railway stations, airport lounges, motorway service stations and marinas. The iPhone automatically selects the fastest available network, preferring Wi-Fi over 3G as it generally provides a much faster connection.

Phorm shares plummet due to BT putting them on hold

Phorm, the controversial online advertising company, has watched its share prices plummet by 40 percent as BT made announcements that they had "taken a step out of Phorm". Although BT stated they were still interested in Phorm, the news of them taking a step back dropped their share price to 270p, according to an article by the BBC. Although Phorm collects no personal data (including IP addresses), it has been criticised due to the way it stores copies of the pages a user visits, and later uses these in order to provide the user with relevant advertising.

BT to Pump £1.5bn into Broadband

BT has announced plans to bring 40% of homes in the UK within reach of high speed fibre optic broadband by the year 2012.

In a £1.5bn investment plan, the telco has also stated that it will be putting fibre-optic cable into 1 million homes directly, making services to these customers even faster.BT has put the pressure on Ofcom however, stating that these changes will only be made if the regulator allows it to get a decent return on its investment.

Customers not within the 1 million lucky homes would still be offered broadband between 40 and 60 megabits per second BT has said. There was no figure given for users within the 1 million households.

In order to pay for the project BT has said it will suspend its £2.5bn share buy-back programme in July - by which time it will have returned more than £1.8bn.

BT hamstrings Home Hub hackers

BT has filled a security hole in its Home Hub service which could allow hackers to take control of the internet router. The company has bypassed the problem by removing the Remote Assistance feature that allows BT admin staff to take control of the device. "As part of BT’s commitment to protect its customers against internet security threats, the Remote Assistance feature within the BT Home Hub Manager software is being deactivated," an official BT statement said.

"The removal of this feature, which is not required for normal operation of the Hub, does not impair any BT Total Broadband services and will not affect other PC-based remote access applications or remote upgrades." Home Hub users clicking on a specially crafted link could have allowed a malicious user to bypass the administrator password procedure.

BT home router wide open to hijackers

If you rely on BT for high-speed internet or VoIP, there's a good chance a pair of UK-based researchers know how to enable a backdoor in your router that leaves you wide open to eavesdropping, caller spoofing and other nasty attacks.

The vulnerability resides in the BT Home Hub, one of the UK's most popular home routers, according to Adrian Pastor and Petko D. Petkov. A constellation of bugs in the router, which is made by Thomson/Alcatel, make it possible to bypass the device's password authentication system and gain complete administrative control.

All an attacker needs to do to exploit the weaknesses is lure the victim to a maliciously crafted website, according to this post on the GNUCitizen blog. The exploit doesn't require knowledge of the administrator password.

BT Openzone to end The Cloud partnership

BT Openzone has written to its customers today to inform them that as of 9am on Thursday 2nd October, customers will no longer have access to The Cloud Wi-Fi Network.

"It’s a decision we haven’t made lightly. While we know this affects the Wi-Fi coverage you might be used to, or hotspots you regularly visit, the great news is that because the availability of Wi-Fi from BT has grown significantly in the past year, we don’t think you’ll be too disadvantaged" BT said in an email to customers.

BT doesn't give a reason for killing off the partnership and there is no information available on BT Openzone's site or The Cloud.

According to BT "You’ll still have access to 3,000 BT Openzone hotspots across the UK and Ireland, and thousands of roaming partner hotspots managed by iBAHN, T-Mobile UK and KeConnect. Don’t forget that you can continue to use your account in hotspots such as 330 Caffè Nero stores and over 500 hotels including Hilton, Thistle, Ramada, Forestdale, Corus and Welcome Breaks in the UK alone! This combined with international roaming partner agreements gives you access to over 40,000 hotspots worldwide".

BT bundles MS Office with Linux laptop

This week's award for the Most Astutely Selected Software Bundle goes to BT after the teleco tried to hook potential purchasers of Asus' Linux-running Eee PC 900 by offering to ship it with a copy of Microsoft Office. BT is offering the 20GB 900 for £335.99, but if anyone out there is willing to buy it for £422.34, the telco will include a copy of Office Home and Student in the box.

This despite the fact that, just a little way further down the page, BT's list of Eee specifications admits that the elfin laptop is not "Office ready". And BT's generosity is as extensive as its ability to select software suitable for the miniature machine. Buying the bundle saves each punter a whopping £1.76 on the cost of purchading the two products separately - which of course Linux Eee buyers are queueing up to do.

BT Release Details of Fibre Optic Rollout

If you receive your broadband through either of the following exchanges, now's a good time to start getting excited. BT have announced that Muswell Hill, London, and Whitchurch, South Glamorgan will be the first two opperational exchanges in their Fibre to the Cabinet ( FTTC ) scheme.

The exchanges will be run by Openreach, and will be available on a wholesale basis to all other UK communication providers, hence reaching the public almost as soon as the scheme goes live. Although this is a fibre scheme, the cables only run to the exchange - the final stretch from exchange to home will still use copper wires. This will still leave users with a pretty hefty (by UK standards, anyway!) 40mbps connection.

BT questioned by police over Phorm trials

British police are currently questioning the company in order to determine whether it's trials of Phorm (both past and planned) are actually illegal.

This is not the first time that BT have been caught short when it comes to Phorm - earlier on in the year, they simply "forgot to mention" the potentially illegal trials to the Home Office.

A police spokeswoman stated that "City of London Police has not launched a criminal investigation in connection with this matter. We are establishing if any criminal offence has been committed". She declined to comment on whether or not it was likely that BT face criminal proceedings over the trials. BT didn't see fit to comment on the case either, however, they appear to have stated their intentions to continue with future Phorm implementations, even if it has the potential to upset the EU.

New Phorm trial begins

BT has restarted its Phorm trial despite huge privacy concerns.

The Phorm system allows BT to track and monitor every website that a user visits. BT puts this information into a database and is then able to insert its own advertising onto web pages that is targeted specific to those users. The system has caused an outrage amongst privacy advocates and the City of London police recently cleared BT of any wrongdoing in its secret trials.

The latest experiment which was delayed due to privacy concerns will affect up to 10,000 users over a 4 week period.

The WebWise system that Phorm has built could have access to details of every website that customers visit, as well as every internet search they conduct and other personal information.

It's rumored that Phorm is in talks with other UK broadband ISPs, including Virgin Media and TalkTalk.

British ISPs Offer Free Wi-Fi

BT Group PLC is turning to its own broadband subscribers to help crack a nut that many governments and service providers have struggled with: Widespread Wi-Fi access.

The U.K.'s biggest broadband provider will equip about 2 million subscribers' broadband routers with software from Fon Technology SL that lets them share part of their Internet bandwidth with the other Fon "members" nearby. BT hopes subscribers will take advantage of the free offer and make Wi-Fi available in many suburban areas, complementing the hotspots and central-city hot zones BT has built around the country.

Fon provides special Wi-Fi routers and software that let people create two separate networks: a secure one for their own use and an open one for anyone within range. Anyone who does this becomes a member of the Fon "community" and can access the Internet on any other member's public connection. The company already has deals with carriers in its native Spain as well as France, the U.S. and other countries, in which subscribers can share their connections. The arrangement with BT offers Fon's biggest potential customer base yet.

BT Vision offers free movie downloads

Vision is making three films available for download free of charge, provided that the viewer is prepared to watch advertisements. Mischief Night, Played and The Punk Rock Movie can be downloaded and viewed using an associated media player developed by Hiro Media. The player will show adverts from The AA, Norwich Union and Territorial Army, among others, during breaks in the films.

Antony Carbonari, interactive and commercial media director at BT Vision, said: "We believe that sympathetically placed targeted advertising, combined with a viral film-sharing capability, will be attractive to customers in conjunction with free or reduced prices." The viewer also has to give some demographic information which the player uses to personalise the advertising.

Wi-fi sharing plan launched in UK

BT has backed a global wireless sharing service called Fon, touting it as the " world's largest wi-fi community " since it lets people share a "small portion" of their home broadband connection by opening up a separate secure channel on their wireless router. The firm's three million broadband customers will be able to share their wi-fi with others in the Fon community, giving Fon users broadband access when in range of another community member's hotspot. BT's scheme with Spanish firm Fon will boost the 500,000-strong community of users around the world and add to the existing 190,000 Fon hotspots. Joining the BT Fon scheme is free of charge and community members will also have free access to existing BT hotspots in its Openzone network.

Gavin Patterson, BT Group's managing director, said the plan was to create " the people's network of wi-fi, that could one day cover every street in Britain. If they are prepared to securely share a little of their broadband, they can share the broadband at hundreds of thousands of Fon and BT Openzone hotspots today, without paying a penny ."
