Today, Microsoft released its first wave of invitations for the Windows 7 beta test. The invitations were only sent to a small, select group of 'technical beta' testers. Extending Windows: Ford Sync demo from CES

Nick White: While at CES last week, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Velle Kolde, Senior Product Manager for Microsoft Auto, to view a demo of Ford Sync. I left our chat very impressed. Ford Sync, like many of the products being developed by Microsoft Automotive, are perfect examples of how we're extending the Windows platform (Windows CE 5.0, in this case) beyond the desktop to arenas outside the domain of typical computing. Check out this video demo to learn more.

Microsoft Videos BETA: Another attempt to push Silverlight?

Microsoft Videos lets us explore and watch Microsoft's collection of online video. The whole experience is built using Microsoft Silverlight platform. The site is a collection of all types of Microsoft videos which includes demos, advertisements, tutorials, press releases, Microsoft Research videos etc. We can scan through Quick Picks for the latest videos, or enter a search for a particular video and we can also choose from one of the given Video Categories.

I personally liked the site. It has got some useful demo videos especially for Expression Studio and I being a developer loved it as it isnt quite easy to find free demo videos for Microsoft Expression suite on the Internet.

Though I also think that the site wont really appeal to the average Joe and it seems like the only purpose of Microsoft behind this website is to push their Silverlight technology more into main stream.

Windows 7 Beta 1 in January

At PDC 2008, Steven Sinofsky announced a general availability date of Windows 7 to be sometime "early next year". This appears to be true according to a Microsoft Insider, who has 'guestimated' the official date to be January 13.

Ed Bott from ZDNet predicts that a demo of Beta 1 will be shown at CES. Ballmer will be giving the pre-CES keynote on January 7, and he has no doubt in his mind that Win7 will be unveiled during that time slot (traditionally given by Bill Gates).

It only makes sense that a public release comes soon after the demo, so if Ed's predictions are correct, the release date of January 13 makes perfect sense.

Keep your eye on the news throughout the month. We're sure to hear some more on the topic very soon!

"Windows 7 Video" Is Fake

Robert McLaws: A couple different websites around the net have been reporting over the past few days on a new video making the rounds on YouTube, purporting to be a video demo of Windows "7". While it is pretty high quality, very elaborate, and shows off some pretty interesting stuff, multiple sources inside Microsoft have told me it's a fake. One source told me that security on Windows 7 is extremely tight for various reasons, and that we shouldn't expect to see anything for quite a while yet.

VistaBlogging.com launches with Video demo

Windows Vista coverage is one of our primary purposes here at Neowin.net. Our goal is to keep users informed with news and information on the latest/greatest happenings in the technology industry.  We also try to do it in a way where you, technology experts, are part of the process. We also let you know about sites and articles on the net that provide the news and information you're looking for without having to scower the net for it.   For users who are really interested in what's going on with Windows Vista or want to share their experiences, a new site called VistaBlogging.com has been launched. This site aims to let technology experts share their own Windows Vista experiences with other users. Any user can submit articles on their Windows Vista experiences and have them displayed on the home page (subject to moderation).   Th e idea is to give users the opportunity to get their opinions heard in the wider world on what they think of Windows Vista, what things they like, don't like, and more.    To help get things started, I've created the first of a series of video demos on Windows Vista in action.  Check it out.  And for on-going technical help and discussion on Windows Vista, check out the Neowin Vista beta discussion area.

Video claims to demo breathtaking Windows 7 features

Many users are interested in whether or not Windows 7 will be an improvement in terms of performance, but that verdict will only be out once benchmark tests are performed on the RTM build. That will be a while. Other users have their eyes set on what features Windows 7 will offer over Windows Vista. Will Microsoft's next operating system add something that truly makes the user exclaim "wow!" or make customers rush to stores the second it hits the shelves?

The current internal builds look like Windows Vista, and this is completely normal because Microsoft begins work on the user interface last. Nevertheless, there have been minor features added already (none of which are set in stone of course). Out of everything we've seen in these early builds, there really hasn't been anything to write home about yet, until now.
