Ubuntu 8.04 vs. Windows XP: Application Performance Benchmark

Several open source applications are available on both Linux as well as Windows. This gave Mohammed Saleh the idea of comparing the performance of various of these applications on both Ubuntu 8.04 as well as Windows XP SP3, to see which of the two performed better with certain applications. The results were rather interesting.

The tests he performed could be more or less grouped into multimedia related tests (Blender, Avidemux, etc.) and hard disk performance tests (the command line RAR utility and ClamAV). The results seem to indicate that Windows XP beats Ubuntu hands-down when it comes to multimedia related applications, and Ubuntu has the advantage in IO intensive applications.

Only 104 Applications "Certified for Windows Vista"

Microsoft on Wednesday posted a page listing 787 applications that have been tested on Windows Vista, thus far only 104 applications have received certification, most of them being Microsoft's own applications along with companies like Ahead, Cyberlink and Trend Micro to name a few.

The web site splits the certification into two areas, Certified and "Works with Windows Vista"
The "Certified for Windows Vista" logo is a compatibility designation for applications and devices that have passed a rigorous testing program on computers that are running Windows Vista. The technical requirements for this designation target four core areas: reliability, security, compatibility with Windows Vista and future operating systems, and installation and removal.

The "Works with Windows Vista" logo is a compatibility designation that is designed to encourage Windows Vista compatibility for the current generation of Windows-based applications. To receive this designation, software companies test their applications to make sure that the applications meet the program's guidelines.
Betane ws reports that "McAfee and other major vendors has yet to make the list, which Microsoft says will be updated each week. The small number of applications could be why Microsoft is offering to pay up to $1,000 to a third party certification company for software developers to test their programs."

Pushing the Limits of Windows: Physical Memory

Mark Russinovich: This is the first blog post in a series I'll write over the coming months called Pushing the Limits of Windows that describes how Windows and applications use a particular resource, the licensing and implementation-derived limits of the resource, how to measure the resources usage, and how to diagnose leaks.

To be able to manage your Windows systems effectively you need to understand how Windows manages physical resources, such as CPUs and memory, as well as logical resources, such as virtual memory, handles, and window manager objects. Knowing the limits of those resources and how to track their usage enables you to attribute resource usage to the applications that consume them, effectively size a system for a particular workload, and identify applications that leak resources.
