Administrative Templates (ADMX) for Windows Server 2008

Administrative templates provide Group Policy setting information for the items that appear under Administrative Templates. Group Policy tools use Administrative template files to populate policy settings in the user interface. This allows administrators to manage registry-based policy settings.

Administrative template files in Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista are divided into ADMX (language-neutral) and ADML (language-specific) files. ADML files are XML-based ADM language files that are stored in a language-specific folder. By default, the %Systemroot%PolicyDefinitions folder on a local computer stores all ADMX files, and ADML files for all languages that are enabled on the computer.

Microsoft changes Windows files on user PCs without permission, researchers say

Microsoft Corp. has started updating files on computers running Windows XP and Vista, even when users have explicitly disabled the operating systems' automatic update feature, researchers said today.

Scott Dunn, an editor at the "Windows Secrets" newsletter, said that nine files in XP and Vista -- but not the same files in each operating system -- have been changed by Windows Update, the Microsoft update mechanism, without displaying the usual notification or permission dialog box. The files, said Dunn, are related to the XP and Vista versions of Windows Update (WU) itself.

"We started hearing from readers that Windows was modifying files in the middle of the night, even when Windows Update was turned off," Dunn said today. Some machines' event logs pinpointed Aug. 24 as the date when the invisible updates began, but on one of Dunn's personal machines, the log showed the changes taking place this week.

Rafael Rivera from Within Windows has announced that UxStyle Core beta now available for download. To give us some information on what UxStyle Core is, we'll start with a little history. Back in the Windows XP days, users were able to modify a system file called Uxtheme.dll and create custom .msstyle files, thus creating their own desktop themes to replace the default "Luna" theme. However, over time, patching went from just one file to multiple files and repatching was necessary when Microsoft would update the Uxtheme.dll files.

MP3 Audio Files Most Common On Computers

The typical U.S. computer in April was home to an average of 880 MP3 audio files, which took up about 3 Gbytes of storage space, according to a new survey out Thursday.

It also contained 197 Microsoft Word files, 100 PDF files, 77 Microsoft Excel files, and 36 Windows Media files.

These figures came from Internet metrics firm comScore, which is expanding its data gathering beyond the Web with a new service called comScore Tech Metrix. The company aims to help client companies improve their product planning and marketing by providing detailed technology profiles based on the 2 million people monitored by its tracking software.

ComScore's data also shows that U.S. computers are gaining storage capacity. The percentage of computers with hard drives of at least 70 Gbytes rose from 33% in January to 39% in April. During the same time, computers with hard drives of less than 50 Gbytes declined from 59% to 53%. ..

At last, a bridge between Windows Home Server and Media Center

With this week's release of Power Pack 2 for Home Server, Microsoft is filling a very important gap. Up until recently, the company had been maintaining that the place for users to store videos and multimedia was on their Media Center computers (generally Windows Vista Ultimate-based systems), and the place for their "everyday files" was their Home Server. But the biggest and most cumbersome "everyday files" are multimedia files, including those that deserve to be streamed and accessed by Media Center. While setting up Media Center to include a Home Server folder as one of its "watch folders" is one option for getting files listed, that's not as rich as setting up a streaming connection...

Symantec false positive cripples thousands of Chinese PCs

A signature update to Symantec's anti-virus software crippled thousands of Chinese PCs Friday when the security software took two critical Windows .dll files for malware.

According to numerous blog entries from Chinese computer users, a virus signature database seeded yesterday mistook two system files of a Chinese edition of Windows XP SP2 as a Trojan horse which Symantec dubs "Backdoor.Haxdoor." The anti-virus software -- Norton AntiVirus, for example, or the anti-virus component of the Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security suites -- then quarantined the netapi32.dll and lsasrv.dll files.

"With these files removed, Windows XP will no longer start up, and even the system Safe Mode no longer functions," said one user writing to the alt.comp.anti-virus newsgroup this morning...

New Sony PSP adds RSS and Windows Media support

The newly released 2.6 firmware update to the Sony PSP adds a few interesting features. Podcast addicts can now access audio RSS feeds with their PSP. The new update also adds Windows Media support for audio files. This is a rare moment as Sony has traditionally shunned competing standards and has often created many of their own standards like the UMD video discs.

RSS feeds are accessed through the PSP's network menu. RSS 2.0 compliant feeds in either MP3 or MP4 (AAC) format are supported. At this time, only audio feeds are supported and Sony has not released when they will support text feeds.

While it's too early to tell if Sony will fully support Windows Media, the new update adds audio WMA playback for files recorded on a Memory Stick Duo. Regular WMA files are supported, but Lossless and copywright-protected files are not...

Microsoft Investigates Blocked Patch Updates in XP

Microsoft officials say they are investigating reports that files the company deployed this summer prevent Windows XP users who run a built-in "repair" function from installing as many as 80 of the company's latest security patches.

"We are aware of reports about customers not being able to download some updates from Windows Update when using the latest version of the Windows Update client and after reinstalling Windows XP system files from CD," a Microsoft spokesperson said Sept. 27. "We take this issue very seriously and are investigating the root cause of this behavior and what options are available to address it."

The issue was brought to light by Scott Dunn, a writer and associate editor with Windows Secrets Newsletter. According to Dunn, the problem is stealthy updates deployed by Microsoft in July and August. The files prevent Windows XP users who utilize the repair function from installing recent patches...

Windows Vista: Offline Files

Here's one I can relate to, Jim talks about the improved Offline files feature in Vista, something I use myself and am very happy with.

One of the key things that we focused on for Windows Vista was improving the experience for mobile (laptop) users. If you are like me, you spend quite a bit of time running around with a laptop. However, when I am in my office, I tend to use my desktop. The primary way that I share files between my desktop and my laptop is by storing them on a Windows Server (it's also the primary way that I make sure that my files get backed up). For example, at Microsoft we redirect the "Documents" folder (previously known as "My Documents" in Windows XP) to a share on the server (of course, we use access controls on the folders to make sure that I am the only person who can see my files).

By redirecting key folders like the Documents folder to a file share, my documents are available to me no matter which one of my Windows PCs I am using. The problem of course is what happens when I don't have access to the server -- such as when I am not on the corporate network or perhaps sitting on an airplane. Frankly, the same problem exists with any file share that I might try to access when I am not on the corporate network.

DivX Tech Preview Adds MKV Video Support to Windows 7

The latest DivX tech preview adds support for MKV video files to Windows 7, so you can use them in Media Center, Media Player, and even show thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

Windows 7 already includes native support for AVI/DivX files, but MKV files are quickly becoming the standard format for media files in HDand while you can play them using everybody's favorite, VLC Player, you won't be able to use them in Media Center or stream to an extender device like the Xbox360, and the thumbnails will just show a generic icon. Installing the DivX Tech Preview enables MKV support, so the video files will work in any application that relies on Microsoft's native media support, and even adds hardware acceleration for video decoding (if your video card supports it)...
