06.09.2005Filter Pack For Windows Search
Sarah Perez: I had been using the latest and greatest search tool for my XP PC,
Windows Search 4.0, but
somehow I had missed
this: the
Filter Pack for searching in Office documents. With the the
Microsoft
Filter Pack installed, Windows Search 4.0 is able to search within Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other Office 2007 documents based on the text they
contain. It also works for Vista too, adding new search capabilities which can be accessed right from Vista’s search bar. Now when you do a
search, the Windows indexing service doesn’t just search for file names but also knows what’s in the files themselves, and that makes
finding the right file so much easier.
IT admins will want to read further instructions found on the download page about how the new Filter
pack can be installed into Exchange, SharePoint, SQL Server, and other Server products. The Filter Pack also works on Windows Server 2003, Vista, and
XP. You can download it from
here.

01.09.2005IE8: Ad blocking with the InPrivate Filter
With my most recent piece, I've been hearing that much of what is holding people back from using IE8 is the lack of an Ad blocking feature.
Perhaps not widely known, but IE8 actually contains a great Ad blocking feature built-in, it's called "InPrivate Filtering". The InPrivate
Filter (enabled by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+F) is intended to block content that may potentially share your information; thankfully advertisements are one
such example of said content. It should be noted that the InPrivate Filter is 'smart' in the sense that it can and will (if enabled)
automatically detect content which appears with a high frequency on websites that you visit.

08.03.2006Windows 7 supports search plugins
When Vista was released, its search features were significantly better than XP's. It's time to take a look at what Microsoft is planning to do for
search for Windows 7; according to information Microsoft has released to developers, search in Windows 7 can go beyond a local network:
"Windows 7 supports searching for documents beyond the user's own PC. Developers and IT professionals can enable their search engines, document
repositories, web applications, and proprietary data stores to be searched from Windows 7 without needing to write and deploy client code. This
enables end users to search their corporate intranet or the web as easily as they can search for their local files—all from within the same familiar
Windows interface."
Furthermore, developers can add Windows 7 compatible OpenSearch support to any existing searchable web application
by adding RSS or ATOM output (the desktop client can then have a Search Connector for the service). SharePoint Search Server can also query these
compatible OpenSearch services (as shown at PDC 2008).

30.11.2008Google unveils new and improved Search Options
A lot of people have been saying lately that Twitter is the newest, and probably best, way to find real-time search results. Pop in what you want into
the search bar and you'll get up to the minute results from people talking about your topic. Google has certainly not sat by and watched this
happen -- according to Mashable and the official Google Blog, they've just unveiled their new Google Search Options. What new features can you
expect when searching? For one, time-based results. As mentioned, Google appears to be taking Twitter head on with this, and now you can filter your
search results based on the time they were posted. A handy feature, especially for journalists.
