Microsoft touts groundbreaking 'clip-on' for Active Directory

Microsoft will pass out beta code Wednesday it hopes will define the next evolution of directories. It's a modular add-on that is built on a database and designed to add querying capabilities and performance never before possible in a directory.

The code is so early-stage it does not have an official name, although internally Microsoft calls it Next Generation Active Directory (NGAD). Microsoft introduced NGAD, which it calls a directory federation technology, on the second day of its annual Professional Developers Conference going on this week.

Microsoft to simplify directory management

Microsoft is developing a number of tools and technologies designed to make it easier to manage users in Active Directory and for companies to confirm identities with partners.

Prototype of the tools were shown Monday at NetPro's annual Directory Experts Conference (DEC) conference and focus on a simple interface that streamlines the discovery of user and schema information. The federation tools provide a simple UI that fronts canned and customized PowerShell-based scripts that build federations via Active Directory Federation Services (ADFS) and lets companies securely share data.

The prototypes were demoed by Joe Long, general manager of the connected identity and directory at Microsoft, during his keynote presentation to open the three-day conference.

Clean up after your server

While learning about the changes in Active Directory on Windows Server 2008 at a recent conference, the presenters casually mentioned a new feature as an aside that is actually quite exciting!

If you have ever had a Domain Controller stolen or experience catastrophic hardware failure, then you are familiar with the joy that is manually cleaning up the DC metadata in Active Directory with NTDSUTIL. (This KB article has all the steps in case you have trouble going to sleep. Daniel Petri also has a good write-up here). It is a painful experience to say the least.

Microsoft to provide Facebook-Toolkit-like add-on for Windows Live developers

Microsoft is planning on fielding in November a set of new tools that will support Windows Live developers.

The forthcoming Windows Live toolbox kit will include add-on tools that will work with Visual Studio 2008, the Expression family of designer tools and the Express hobbyist tools. the first deliverable will support Visual Studio 2008 and possibly also Visual Studio 2005.

Microsoft is planning to officially roll out the Visual studio Toolkit for Windows Live simultaneously at the Dev Connections show in Las Vegas and TechEd Europe. (My bet is the rollout will be of a beta of the toolkit, though I dont know this for sure.)

LiveSide.Net obtained some preliminary details about the new toolkit during the recent Mix UK conference. Microsoft execs told LiveSide that the new tools are going to look and work a lot like the Facebook Developer Toolkit that Microsoft announced in May 2007. In fact, the new Visual Studio Toolkit for Windows Live is being developed by Microsofts Doug Handler, who did a lot of the work on the Facebook toolkit in terms of using a drag-drop-to-canvas model, the Softies told LiveSide.)

PowerPoint Prototyping Toolkit (release 0.1)

Long Zheng: After hearing about the impact and success it had in Microsoft, I couldnt wait to get my hands on prototyping in PowerPoint 2007. Amongst a few things Manuel Clement suggested a few weeks ago in his presentation about œwireframe prototyping with Office PowerPoint 2007³, was to create a toolkit of commonly used GUI components to copy and paste when designing the prototype screens. Thats what I set out to build.

My vision for a toolkit is to contain a set of all the possible and feasible GUI components you could otherwise use in designing a real Windows application or browser application. For example, it should include buttons, drop-down lists, window frames, toolbars, dialog boxes and address bars. Of course there are probably as many of those as there are stars, so Ill just have to focus on the most commonly used ones.
