I have written numerous times that there is nothing
wrong with the Windows NT kernel currently powering about 90% of the world's desktops. It provides advanced security features, it's extremely
stable, very portable, and supports just about any piece of hardware in the x86 desktop and server markets. "In conclusion, scrapping Windows NT
would be a pointless exercise. It is a mature, stable, and, yes, secure system by design." I wrote a year ago, "Do not make the mistake of thinking
that simply because Microsoft refused to enforce proper security policies from the get-go, that NT is an insecure system by design."

that this is based on a complaint filed by Opera which condemned Microsoft for browser monopoly and urged Microsoft to follow fundamental and open Web
standards. In an interview with The Register, Hakon Wium Lie, Opera Software CTO, outlined 2 possible options in his view that could work if EC makes
it mandatory for Microsoft to deliver browsers of user's choice. He suggested that either: An Automatic Update download agent to get user's
preference before the browser gets installed, (or) Display the available range of browsers and get user preference to run a specific browser.

resounding, "yes". Weintraub first discovered evidence in a July tweet by Fred Falonde, the founder of openspaces.org, that Apple purchased
PlaceBase, a business that produces a mapping API called Pushpin and offers a mapping service very similar to Google's. After letting the story
lie dormant few the last few months, Weintraub did some investigating of PlaceBase's founder and CEO, Jaron Waldman. According to Weintraub,
Waldman's LinkedIn page lists his stint at PlaceBase as past experience, with his current occupation being a member of Apple's GEO team.

zero-day vulnerability in
Windows Vista doesn't put a
lie to the claim that it's
the safest Microsoft operating
system so far, a company
security manager has said.
"The finding of
vulnerabilities in any
software is to be expected,"
said Stephen Toulouse, senior
product manager with
Microsoft's security
technology group, in a blog
posting earlier this week.
"This is all part of the
process of creating complex
software today, and no one is
immune to it. It's not, as
they say, big news to us in
the security industry."
Proof-of-concept code
for an unpatched bug in all
supported versions of Windows,
including Vista, went public
last week, prompting warnings
from security vendors who
classified the flaw as a low
or medium threat. Microsoft
has said it was "closely
monitoring" the situation,
but has not released any
additional information since
Dec. 22. Toulouse countered
that the exploit doesn't
invalidate Microsoft's
contention that Vista is more
secure than its predecessor,
Windows XP. "This product
the most secure version
of Windows we've produced to
date. That doesn't mean
'zero vulnerabilities.' No
one can claim that crown," he
added.

version of its QuickTime
software, partly to repair
eight serious security
vulnerabilities. Apple
confirmed that the
vulnerabilities make both Macs
and Windows PCs susceptible to
malicious files which, when
opened with QuickTime, could
give the attacker full control
over a computer running the
software. The problems lie in
the way QuickTime handles a
number of formats: QuickTime,
MIDI, 3GP, PICT and QTIF
files, according to the Apple
alert. Security researchers
have increasingly been
targeting applications in
recent months, claiming that
hackers are more focused on
widely used programs than
operating systems that are

Vendors fixing bug that could crash Internet systems
Internet infrastructure vendors are working on patches for a set of security flaws that could help hackers knock servers offline with very little
effort. The security community has been buzzing about the bugs since Tuesday, when security researcher Robert Hansen discussed the problem on his blog

Technical details on the vulnerabilities have not been released, but the security experts who discovered the problem, Robert Lee and Jack
Louis of security vendor Outpost24, say that they can knock Windows, Linux, embedded systems and even firewalls offline with what's known as a
denial of service (DOS) attack. The flaws lie in the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) software used by these systems to send
data over the Internet.
