'You Already Have MinWin'

We have learnt quite a lot about Windows 7 this week, and one of the things was that Windows 7 would not get a new kernel. The call for a new kernel has been made a few times on the internet, but anyone with a bit more insight into Windows' kernel knows that there is absolutely no need to write a new kernel for Windows - the problems with Windows lie in userland, not kernelland. While the authenticity of the Shipping Seven blog is not undisputed, the blogger makes some very excellent points regarding the kernel matter.

Opera: Browser market is brokenthanks to Microsoft

With recent news about Internet Explorer 8's imminent beta, Microsoft's long and checkered history with web standards compliance has been hurled back into the harsh, unflattering spotlight. Even though IE8 will have a new "standards compliant" mode, it won't be perfect, stirring up a new wave of grumbling about Microsoft's attitude and position in the browser market.

Opera CTO Håkon Wium Lie has weighed in with a new editorial at The Register about "How to fix Microsoft's browser issues." He begins by stating that because of Microsoft's monopolistic practices, no real browser market exists, and the company doesn't feel the need to actually listen to its users. "A monopoly doesn't have to consider its customers' wants or needs. In a functioning market, vendors must consider such things in order to compete successfully. But the market isn't functioning," Lie wrote.

Editorial: Three ways to a cleaner, brighter Mac

The presupposition that Macs are the choice for the user who wants a hassle free, take it out of the box and get on with it experience is simply a lie. This may very well be the experience Mac users get for a while, but soon enough the system (like every other computer) becomes a little sluggish, and not as speedy as it was in its younger days. Increasingly, it is becoming apparent that if a user requires their Mac for anything other than rudimentary tasks, it has to have a deep clean every now and again otherwise it will get a little sluggish.

While the authenticity of the Shipping Seven blog is not undisputed, the blogger makes some very excellent points regarding the kernel matter.

I have written numerous times that there is nothing wrong with the Windows NT kernel currently powering about 90% of the world's desktops. It provides advanced security features, it's extremely stable, very portable, and supports just about any piece of hardware in the x86 desktop and server markets. "In conclusion, scrapping Windows NT would be a pointless exercise. It is a mature, stable, and, yes, secure system by design." I wrote a year ago, "Do not make the mistake of thinking that simply because Microsoft refused to enforce proper security policies from the get-go, that NT is an insecure system by design."

Playboy to Launch College Social Networking Site

To compensate for declining readership and profits, Chicago-based Playboy Enterprises Inc. is heading back to school to boost the bottom line in one of its biggest expansion efforts in years. Riding a wave of renewed popularity among consumers around the globe, Hugh Hefner's Playboy empire is set to launch a sexy social networking site dedicated solely to college students, its latest online venture as it tries to reinvigorate its stagnant finances. The site, currently in beta, is called Playboy U and has similar features to those found on Facebook. " This is one brand that is relevant to 18 through 81-year-olds, " said Scott Stephen, executive vice president of operations for Playboy's entertainment division. " We're looking at this as a way to introduce and escort someone through their adult life. "

" It's a very lucrative market, " said Michael Kelman, senior media analyst at Susquehanna Financial Group. " The college kids, they're going to be better-educated and have higher disposable incomes. (But) it's been a very, very tough audience to grab. " Although Playboy U bars nudity, the site leaves little to the imagination with pictures from the mansion's "Midsummer Night's Dream" party and message topics such as "What Do You Think About Penis Enlargement" and "How Many People Have You Slept With? To Lie or Not to Lie." The site has instituted a college-only policy, which bars anyone without an e-mail address ending in .edu from joining; additionally Playboy U says it will boot any university faculty, staff or alumni or other non-students that it discovers on the site. " Your little brother can't get in. Your little sister can't get in. Nor can your mother and father, " Stephen said.

European Union vs Microsoft, Opera - The war continues

It is known that the European Commission(EC) is considering forcing Microsoft to bundle rival browsers alongside IE in the Windows OS. It is likely that this is based on a complaint filed by Opera which condemned Microsoft for browser monopoly and urged Microsoft to follow fundamental and open Web standards. In an interview with The Register, Hakon Wium Lie, Opera Software CTO, outlined 2 possible options in his view that could work if EC makes it mandatory for Microsoft to deliver browsers of user's choice. He suggested that either: An Automatic Update download agent to get user's preference before the browser gets installed, (or) Display the available range of browsers and get user preference to run a specific browser.

Apple's Cash Conundrum

Its stash may soon be bigger than Microsoft's. But should all those billions continue to lie dormant?

Apple Inc. shareholders haven't had much to carp about, with the stock up 1,474% since 2003. But if there is one complaint, it's the company's refusal to do anything with the $20.8 billion in cash and short-term investments it has socked away. The cash just sits there, earning little more than the average savings account. "Our preference is to maintain a strong balance sheet in order to preserve our flexibility," Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer told investors earlier this year.

Use of rogue DNS servers on rise

They're called "servers that lie."

Mendacious machines controlled by hackers that reroute Internet traffic from infected computers to fraudulent Web sites are increasingly being used to launch attacks, according to a paper published this week by researchers with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Google Inc.

The paper estimates roughly 68,000 servers on the Internet are returning malicious Domain Name System results, which means people with compromised computers are sometimes being directed to the wrong Web sites - and often have no idea.

Opera files antitrust complaint with the EU

Opera Software ASA, the only company that can put the Web on any device, filed a complaint with the European Commission yesterday which is aimed at giving consumers a genuine choice of Web browsers.

The complaint describes how Microsoft is abusing its dominant position by tying its browser, Internet Explorer, to the Windows operating system and by hindering interoperability by not following accepted Web standards. Opera has requested the Commission to take the necessary actions to compel Microsoft to give consumers a real choice and to support open Web standards in Internet Explorer.

Is Apple taking on Google in the mapping arena?

Has Apple purchased a mapping company to compete with Google? If ComputerWorld’s Seth Weintraub is to be believed the answer is a resounding, "yes". Weintraub first discovered evidence in a July tweet by Fred Falonde, the founder of openspaces.org, that Apple purchased PlaceBase, a business that produces a mapping API called Pushpin and offers a mapping service very similar to Google's. After letting the story lie dormant few the last few months, Weintraub did some investigating of PlaceBase's founder and CEO, Jaron Waldman. According to Weintraub, Waldman's LinkedIn page lists his stint at PlaceBase as past experience, with his current occupation being a member of Apple's GEO team.

Microsoft: Vista's Secure, Not Perfect

Last week's disclosure of a zero-day vulnerability in Windows Vista doesn't put a lie to the claim that it's the safest Microsoft operating system so far, a company security manager has said. "The finding of vulnerabilities in any software is to be expected," said Stephen Toulouse, senior product manager with Microsoft's security technology group, in a blog posting earlier this week. "This is all part of the process of creating complex software today, and no one is immune to it. It's not, as they say, big news to us in the security industry."

Proof-of-concept code for an unpatched bug in all supported versions of Windows, including Vista, went public last week, prompting warnings from security vendors who classified the flaw as a low or medium threat. Microsoft has said it was "closely monitoring" the situation, but has not released any additional information since Dec. 22. Toulouse countered that the exploit doesn't invalidate Microsoft's contention that Vista is more secure than its predecessor, Windows XP. "This product the most secure version of Windows we've produced to date. That doesn't mean 'zero vulnerabilities.' No one can claim that crown," he added.

Apple plugs eight QuickTime holes

Apple has released a new version of its QuickTime software, partly to repair eight serious security vulnerabilities. Apple confirmed that the vulnerabilities make both Macs and Windows PCs susceptible to malicious files which, when opened with QuickTime, could give the attacker full control over a computer running the software. The problems lie in the way QuickTime handles a number of formats: QuickTime, MIDI, 3GP, PICT and QTIF files, according to the Apple alert. Security researchers have increasingly been targeting applications in recent months, claiming that hackers are more focused on widely used programs than operating systems that are becoming more secure.

Vendors fixing bug that could crash Internet systems

Internet infrastructure vendors are working on patches for a set of security flaws that could help hackers knock servers offline with very little effort. The security community has been buzzing about the bugs since Tuesday, when security researcher Robert Hansen discussed the problem on his blog .

Technical details on the vulnerabilities have not been released, but the security experts who discovered the problem, Robert Lee and Jack Louis of security vendor Outpost24, say that they can knock Windows, Linux, embedded systems and even firewalls offline with what's known as a denial of service (DOS) attack. The flaws lie in the TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) software used by these systems to send data over the Internet.
