Sparkle produces the first 80 nanometre Nvidia card

MANY businesses in Europe will be closed from Monday till probably January the 3rd 2007. That hasn't stopped Sparkle from announcing its Calibre P768 card based on Geforce 7600 GT 80nm chip. I guess Nvidia had to do it in 2006 as it promised to its investors it was supposed to shift from 90 nanometre to 80 a while ago.

The new 80 nanometre parts will end up clocked at 650MHz - 90MHz faster than the previous 7600 GT clock. The chip behind it is G73 but we don't know what Nvidia calls the new 80 nanometre ones. The memory on Sparkle card works at 1600MHz and Nvidia hasn't changed the chip memory support as it still works with 128 bit memory only. The card comes with 256MB memory and has twelve rendering pipelines. It supports PCIe 16X interface.

Apple Recommends Antivirus Software

Apple has issued a technical note about Mac antivirus software, and, for the first time, suggests that Macs need such software. The note says: "Apple encourages the widespread use of multiple antivirus utilities so that virus programmers have more than one application to circumvent, thus making the whole virus writing process more difficult." The note then goes on to mention three antivirus programs, with Intego VirusBarrier X5 listed first. It is worth noting this, since Apple, especially in its recent "Get a Mac" ads, has always publicly tried to ignore the threat of malware to Macs, as well as other security issues.

Onto the next version of Windows

The day after releasing the final Windows Vista bits to volume-licensing business customers. Microsoft issued a call to testers asking for input on the next version of Windows.

"Many customers have expressed the desire to have an impact on future releases of Windows. We have often heard from customers that they want the opportunity to make suggestions about the way Windows works," according to a copy of a note Microsoft sent to Windows testers, published on the ActiveWin.com Web site.

"The purpose of this program is to gather that early feedback from Windows customers and use it to make the next version of Windows the best release yet. Who Can Participate Initially this program will be open to participants of the Windows Vista Technical Beta Community. At a future date after general Windows Vista consumer availability it will be opened up to all registered Microsoft Connect users," the note said.

Another note regarding KB935509...

We had a small number of early customer reports, that in some cases, this update (KB935509) was being offered for installation on all Windows Vista editions vs. just Ultimate and Enterprise. A quick adjustment of the applicability logic was released shortly there-after to refine the edition offering behavior. For systems set to download and install updates automatically, the update will not install even if it has already downloaded, so most people will not be affected by this at all. Customers who installed the initial release of the update on editions other than Ultimate or Enterprise should not be concerned as the update will have no negative impact on their systems “ it was designed to install on all versions of Windows Vista, it is just not required on any of the others for SP1.

Gartner: Windows XP A Shaky Bridge To Windows 7

Computer users that pass on Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system in favor of the company's next OS release could find themselves in the lurch given Microsoft's "poor" track record for shipping new products on time, research firm Gartner is warnings its clients.

In a note, Gartner said it's been told by Microsoft that the software maker is "scoping Windows 7 development to a three-year time frame," confirming earlier new reports about Microsoft's plan for a Windows Vista successor.

But Gartner warns that businesses that decide to stick with Windows XP -- Vista's predecessor -- until Windows 7 is available may be pushing their luck. "If the release date slips, enterprises will find it difficult to fully eliminate Windows XP before ISV and Microsoft support ends," Gartner analysts write in the note.

A number of businesses and government agencies have indicated they may forego installing Windows Vista on their enterprise systems due to concerns about price, performance, and application compatibility. Some 30% of the 612 IT pros that responded to a recent InformationWeek survey said they have no plans to upgrade their company's computer systems to Windows Vista.

Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta Build Clarification

Just a quick note to anyone that plans on testing the new Windows Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V Beta. The build Microsoft posted here is in fact a much newer build than either the original Server 2008 RC1 or Vista SP1 RC1. While the original RC1 was Build 6001.17051 for Server 2008 and 6001.17052 for Vista SP1, the new Server 2008 RC1 with Hyper-V beta is substantially newer at 6001.17119 and may even contain further stability/performance improvements to the actual OS so it may be worth checking it out even if you don't intend to test the Hyper-V bits. Also note that due to Hyper-V being a 64-Bit OS only option, there is no 32-Bit build available of the newer Server 2008 RC1.

Microsoft: Windows Server 2008 Not Delayed

Speculation has been growing in the media that Windows Server 2008, formerly codenamed "Longhorn," could be delayed past its release to manufacturing (RTM) date of the second half of 2007, and slip into 2008. Microsoft, on its Windows Server Division blog today, says "it just ain't so."

The very brief note reads in full: "Today we noticed a couple articles which have incorrectly speculated about a Windows Server 2008 delay. Actually, we remain fully on track for Windows Server 2008's release to manufacturing in the second half of 2007, with general availability following after that as usual."

Microsoft has given no more specific timetable for the new OS's release, but the name gives a hint that it will be released late in 2007 at the earliest. Windows Server 2008 is currently in beta 3 release, and is feature complete, according to Microsoft. ..
