Intel's Core-fueled Xeon MP arrives at 2.93GHz

Intel finally looks set to carry its Core processor architecture to midrange and high-end servers with the release of a new Xeon code-named Tigerton.

The chip maker today revealed that the Tigerton chip will officially be sold as the Quad-Core Xeon 7300 series and will rely on the 7300 chipset code-named Clarksboro. The fresh Xeon should provide twice the performance of its NetBurst-based predecessor. The fastest version of the Xeon 7300 will arrive at 2.93GHz, and Intel will sell a low-voltage part that chews through 50W. (Add the chipset and chip together, and you get the "Caneland" platform - for what it's worth.)

Customers started receiving seed systems in June. Intel will ramp into whole-hog mode sometime during the third quarter...

Intel: Caneland turning AMD's server momentum around

Intel is gearing up to launch the its Xeon 7300 processor, the last piece of its Core micro-architecture strategy. It's a critical product that is designed to attack AMD in a market that is still dominated by the green team. But Intel believes that is going to change.

An internal newsletter article, Intel is preparing its employees for the launch of the Caneland platform and the Xeon 7300 processor, previously code-named "Tigerton". The company chooses aggressive phrases to stress its confidence that the MP processor will successfully "tackle" what is AMD's only remaining bastion today.

Intel acknowledged that AMD "has gained market share versus Intel for several quarters based on MP platforms and its Hypertransport architecture," which enabled the company to convince many big OEMs to switch to the Opteron processor. However, Intel said that the Xeon 7300 platform is "key to helping turn this AMD momentum around". "We're excited to hear some of AMD's largest OEMs now calling the Caneland platform their 'virtualization platform of choice'," the article states. ..

Intel launches quad-core products for multi-processor server

Intel has finally completed its transition to replace Netburst with its Core microarchitecture by launching its Caneland platform for multi-socket (4-way) servers and six Quad-Core Xeon 7300 series (Tigerton) CPUs. At the heart of Caneland is the Intel 7300 chipset which allows each of the four sockets to be connected to its own 1066MHz FSB. This design offers at lot of bandwidth, but it also shows how close to the limit Intel is pushing is FSB architecture, and how much the company needs to switch to its Common System Interface (CSI) to pass the bottleneck.

The 7300 chipset also allows memory capacity to be quadrupled to 256GB across 32 DIMMs. Those are FB-DIMMs however, so if you really want that much RAM you will have to pay for it in system heat and power consumption, not to mention the hefty cost of the memory itself.

New 4-Socket Xeon Targets Virtualization

Intel has unveiled its new 7300 and 7200 series Xeon processors as well as its new 7300 chipset today at a launch event in San Francisco. Previously known by their Tigerton and Clarksboro codenames, respectively, the 4-core and 2-core chips are designed for systems with 4 or more physical processors. The new chips also mark the final stage of Intel's transition to its Core micro-architecture, which allows for more power efficient chips than the previous NetBurst generation. The transition to the Core architecture has allowed Intel to close the gap with AMD in the performance per Watt metric, allowing the chipmaker to take back market share from AMD Opteron.

To further support migration of virtual workloads, the new chips also feature a new technology dubbed VT FlexMigration Assist. The technology allows virtualization software such as VMware ESX Server or Xen to move virtual workloads between physical processors and servers as they are running. Currently such technology requires that all servers offer the same micro-architecture. Intel's FlexMigration enables for the migration of workloads between the Core micro-architecture as well as future micro-architectures such as the ones that will be used in Intel's forthcoming 45-nanometer Penryn processors and future chips.

Intel releases quad-core Tigerton processor

Intel plans to unveil a version of its Xeon processor on Wednesday that's designed for high-end servers with multiple processors -- setting the stage for a showdown with rival Advanced Micro Devices' upcoming quad-core Barcelona chip.

The Xeon 7300 chips, called Tigerton, are the first quad-core processors from Intel designed to be used in servers with four or more processors, a relatively small but lucrative segment of the server market. Previously, the Xeon processor for this segment of the market had two cores, despite the availability of quad-core Xeon chips for single-processor and two-way servers.

The new chips offer significantly better performance compared to their predecessors, Intel's Xeon 5300 chips, said Adesh Gupta, regional platform architecture manager at Intel Asia-Pacific's Server Platforms Group. ..

Intel readies Penryn chips, may release Silverthorne early

Following the launch of Intel's quad-core Xeon 7300 processor on Wednesday, the company's efforts are now focused on preparations for the rollout of its first Penryn chips later this year. And there are signs the company is planning an early 2008 release of its Silverthorne chip for ultramobile PCs and handheld devices.

Intel confirmed plans to release a server version of Penryn before the end of this year, but the company is releasing little information about its plans for mobile and desktop versions of the chip. Penryn will offer better performance than Intel's current processors, and the company is counting on them to hold off any gains rival Advanced Micro Devices makes with the release of its quad-core Barcelona chips next week.

"So far what we've said is that we intend to ship a broad family of 45-nanometer processors by the end of the year," said Nick Jacobs, an Intel spokesman in Singapore, referring to the technology used to produce the Penryn chips. ..

Did AMD Barcelona and Intel Tigerton really launch?

AMD officially launched the Barcelona quad-core processor last month in San Francisco, but people are telling me that the systems are nowhere to be seen from any of the major server manufacturers nor is there any time line given for availability.

To see if there is any merit to these complaints, I posed as a prospective IT shopper and called up some of the major Server makers such as HP, Dell, and IBM to see if I can actually order a server with AMD Barcelona inside of it. Intel officially launched their Tigerton 7300 series multi-processor (4-32 CPUs) platform less than a week before AMDs Barcelona so I was curious if those systems were shipping too and I checked on its availability as well.

Flexible Color E-Paper Coming Soon

LG.Philips LCD has announced a 14.1-inch size flexible display. Dubbed "technology e-paper," the LG.Philips display uses technology from E-Ink Corporation, and is able to produce 4,096 colors (previously only available in grayscale). LG.Philips says that it's able to achieve flexibility from using a thin metal foil, instead of thin glass, as the back lining for the display allowing the display to be bent and then recover its original shape. A company in France called Nemoptic also announced a 14.1-inch e-paper display capable of resolutions up to 1650x2340 (~4 megapixels) with approximately 200 dpi of resolution. Judging from the specifications, the Nemoptic display is identical to LG.Philips' unit.

The flexible displays are resistant to curve damage and use very little power. Because of the way E-ink works, the display only uses power when the image changes, allowing a static picture to hold for a long period of time without requiring power. Unfortunately, the technology behind E-ink is too slow to display videos (24-30 FPS) as the screens are only capable of a refresh rate of slightly less than one second. Both LG.Philips and Nemoptic indicate that they are shipping samples to manufacturers and consumers should see the technology available in the market sometime in 2008.

GeForce 8600 Ultra, 8600 GT, 8300 GT and 8300 GS Specs

GeForce 8600 and GeForce 8300 are the two series of graphics cards which will fill the void beneath NVIDIA's already launched 8800 series. Based on the G84 core 8600 Ultra and GT will have 64 and 48 shader processors respectively with cores running at 500MHz and 350MHz. With a 256-bit memory bus and memory speeds at 1400MHz and 1200MHz the cards will replace the 7600 series of today. The launch date for these cards is about the same as for when ATI will launch R600, that is, around CeBIT at the start of March.

Except from the 8600 series Bear Eyes has also published specifications for 8300 GT and 8300 GS (via VR-Zone). These cards will replace the 7300 series of today and is based on the G86, an 80nm core. The number of shader processors has been halved to 32 and 24 respectively, while both cores will work at 500MHz. The GT model will have slightly faster memories though, 1200MHz vs. 1000MHz. With a 128-bit bus and up to 256MB the performance will most likely be reflected by the price.

Nvidia Announces GeForce 7200 GS

Nvidia has announced the GeForce 7200 GS, a card that delivers Vista Premium Ready graphics performance for a mere $50. NVIDIA touts full support for DirectX 9.0, shader model 3.0 and high dynamic-range with the entry-level card. The G72 graphics core, clocked at 450 MHz, is essentially a crippled GeForce 7300-series core: half the pipelines. This brings the total pixel pipelines to two, each with one texture unit. PureVideo video processing is also supported; however, NVIDIA is unclear if the GeForce 7200 GS supports PureVideo HD for high-definition video decoding acceleration.

Add-in board manufacturers are free to equip GeForce 7200 GS graphics cards with 128MB or 256MB of DDR2 memory attached to the GPU via a 64-bit memory interface. NVIDIA recommends 800 MHz for GeForce 7200 GS graphics cards. GeForce 7200 GS based graphics cards will be available to OEMs, system builders and retail. NVIDIA add-in board partners with GeForce 7200 GS products include Albatron, ASUS, Biostar, ECS, EVGA, Foxconn, Galazy, Gigabyte, Innovision, Leadtek, MSI, Palit, Point of View, PNY Technology, SPARKLE, XFX, Zogis and Zotac.
