03.06.2009Mininova: 1 Million Torrents Uploaded
First it breaks the 3 billion .torrent download mark, then Alexa ranks it as the 46th most visited website on the Internet, and now Mininova can claim
that it has had over 1,000,000th torrents uploaded to it. Considering the bittorent site only hosts torrents that are uploaded by its users, a million
torrents is quite an achievement. Last year in November, that number was half what it is now. If this trend continues, sooner or later someone
(RIAA/MPAA/CRIA, you name it) is going to be knocking at, no scratch that, is going to be breaking down the site’s owner’s door. Mininova
founder Niek has said that the few errors that the site spits out time and again, due to the traffic increase, are being worked on and promises an
improvement.

n internal survey revealed that 80% of 1000 torrents

The prosecutors are also trying to establish that a hierarchy does exist at TPB but appear to be failing at solidifying their case. "Someone must
ultimately decide whether to put up a certain text or graphic," asked Roswall. "No," Neij replied. "Why?

23.02.2009Surge in encrypted torrents blindsides record biz
The legal crackdown and publicity blitz aimed at people who share music, videos and software online may be having an unintended consequence for the
troubled record industry. The number of file-sharers disguising their BitTorrent activity with encryption is skyrocketing.
Figures from a large UK ISP obtained by The Register show that the portion of BitTorrent traffic encrypted by file-sharers has risen
10-fold in the last 12 months, from four to 40 per cent.
This time last year, unencrypted torrents accounted for about 500Mbit/s
of bandwidth, while files that had been scrambled by uploaders swallowed just 20Mbit/s.
The latest data shows that bandwidth used
by unencrypted torrents has fallen to 350Mbit/s. Sharing of masked music, video and software has meanwhile exploded to average more than 200Mbit/s.

The Hydra Project is a new script for private BitTorrent trackers designed to resist any attack or raid, and to guarantee the privacy and anonymity of
its users. Its truly hydra compatible, which is much needed quality in these turbulent times.
The Hydra Project, THP for short, is developed with privacy, anonymity and
survivability in mind. One of innovative features of the project is to make an OpenID for users of private BitTorrent sites so their login information
and upload/download ratios can be shared across different websites. The torrents can also be shared among different trackers. This ensures that user
ratios and uploaded torrents will not be lost if for some reason one of the BitTorrent trackers ceases to exist.

20.04.2006Microsoft admits Windows 7 torrents were inevitable
Microsoft released their
Windows 7 M3 build
6801 at PDC last week and within 24 hours copies began to appear on popular bit torrent sites worldwide.
In a recent press roundtable,
Microsoft executive Gary Schare, director of hardware ecosystem product management for the Windows client, acknowledged that the problem of bit
torrent distribution was inevitable.
"Certainly when we went into an event saying 'OK, you have to come to an event to get the
bits', you kind of know that someone is going to find a way to put that out there," Schare told
APC, though he declined to comment on any
specific legal actions Microsoft might take against downloaders: "I can't speak to what our legal team or anyone else has done."
The
M3 build, released at last weeks PDC and WinHEC this week, does not require a serial to install therefore you can download and test the build freely.
Distribution to those wishing to install Windows 7 is probably a blessing in disguise for Microsoft. The windows team pools together a lot
of data from Windows update and the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP) so a broader range of feedback may assist with early issues. Many
who install Windows 7 early are technical enough to deal with any early bugs and can provide essential feedback ready for the broad beta in early
2009.
On the other hand many in the 1000 strong Windows team may argue that this creates a lot of noise and too much broad feedback. The
company may not require such broad feedback from non developers and hardware engineers for such an early build.
Microsoft has not provided
a full schedule for the beta of Windows 7 but yesterday in a keynote at Microsoft's WinHEC conference, Steven Sinofsky hinted at there being 1
beta and 1 release candidate before RTM.

21.03.2009Windows 7 Release Candidate goes public... Oops
Tired of waiting for Microsoft to release the first (and likely only) release candidate of Windows 7? No worries, you can go and snatch it up now...
via torrents. Earlier today, build 7100 of Windows 7, the official Release Candidate build, leaked to the public.
While no new visual
elements stand out from previous builds, UI changes should no longer be expected this late in the game. Any changes from this point on will be, for
the most part, behind the scenes. One notable change however is Microsoft's decision to revert back to the previous active tile design for the
taskbar, as found in build 7068, as it no longer features the white hazy glow behind the icon.
The official release date of Windows 7 RC
is expected to be May 5th for the public, and slightly earlier for TechNet and MSDN subscribers.
Have you found anything new in this
build? Share it with us in our community forums...
Update: Microsoft now says the RC will be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers on
April 30th.

23.08.2007Vista SP1 gold bits on track for this week
After both public and private betas galore, Microsoft is set to make the final, gold Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 bits available, most likely
this week.
Last week, I’ve been getting reports of SP1 bits being available on torrents. I asked Microsoft earlier last week if these
builds were, as some were saying, the final Vista SP1 bits. And, as usual, the Windows client team wasn’t saying a whole lot.
On
January 29, a Microsoft spokeswoman said Vista SP1 had yet to be officially released to manufacturing. The
recent SP1 Release Candidate (RC) Refresh 2 is not the RTM build, the
spokeswoman said. “And we’re not commenting on the build number,” she said, when I asked whether the “18000″ build
number was the RTM version.
